That is: when you mean the definition of the kanji, are you talking about the word on the front?
In that case, in a way. It's often kind of a stretch and more of an etymological occurrence which will likely be more useful at part of a more specific linguistic study of the language. Not great for a learner who doesn't already have thousands of those word connections with the kanji, radicals and their combination trends.

For instance, there are often radicals that occur in words/kanji that provide an indication of the reading of the kanji. On a different part of the spectrum there are components that occur to provide "meaning", more specifically.

To be honest I don't think it is something really worth thinking about too much at least until further down the line. You'll probably get more mileage of being familiar with more words over X period of time as opposed to consciously thinking too much about the constituent parts of a kanji within a word and trying to derive the definition from there.

The "radical" is just a way of arranging characters in old dictionaries. That's why the word for "radical" means "section head" 部首. "Radical" is a mistranslation. Most characters have a meaning component and a sound component, so breaking up characters into "radicals" is a complete waste of time.

I'm looking for an android app that would allow me to find english translation of words written in kanji without the need to know its pronounciation.

I imagine it could work like this: the app recognizes a character drawn by my hand, shows me its readings and other useful information (any kanji recognizer I've found does at least this) but doesn't stop there and shows me all the words using that particular kanji with its english translation (this I can't find).

Uh this might be a dumb question but how do u teach yourself a language? I find it hard without a teacher.
I've never been to japanese school and I think it's too late now, but my mom is Japanese and she just tells me I should learn how to speak it first because the grammar and shit is complicated. She doesn't teach well, she just speaks japanese and hopes I understand it, so my comprehension is decent, but I don't find myself making progress.
I'm about halfway through learning how to read hiragana and katakana, but I have no idea what to do after

If i'm already halfway through Genki, is it worth it to continue or should i just switch to another guide like Tae Kim. My rational is that to continue in Genki i would need to learn the vocab for each chapter, but im already doing the core 6k everyday

Is there any contextual difference between 唄 and 歌?

The closest I can find is that 唄 is used for shamisen, whereas 歌 can be used more for classical poetry. But in a modern context, I'm not certain. RTK defines 唄 as 'pop song' and 歌 as 'song' (Heisig must have been smoking something).

In that case, there are kanji production decks with Anki that focus on showing a keyword prompt to recall/produce a kanji. These, such as Remember the Kanji (the first and third books) are based around mnemonics.

hi, small question about Genki I.

i've now noticed there's a "grammar and conversation section", and "the reading and writing section". should i do all the "grammar and conversation section" before the other section. like i'm working through a normal textbook? or skip back and forth like: do lesson 1 grammar, and then lesson 1 writing, the go back and do lesson 2 grammar...? there's 12 of each.

Have any Linux friends had issues with getting iBus to work? Performance is bad. It takes around 30 seconds to plot the 1-year chart and 5 minutes for the all-time chart (maybe it's going up to the oldest date available, which is 2009 (2012?), when the Core cards were created, instead of only going back up to 2015 when I started Anki.
Or maybe it's because it plots a day-to-day retention graph, instead of simplifying it as a week/month average like the rest of the Stats do. I don't know!

Another thing to consider is cropping the lowest end of the chart - if my lowest retention rate is 50%, there is no need to show 0-50%, I could see more vertical detail on my retention variation with a 50-100% chart. Take the lowest retention rate as the bottom of the chart.

holy shit, yes, i'll try to fix this today. on my small collection and my i7 the all time stats are almost istantaneous so I didn't think it would be a problem.

It's from a mobile game so it's difficult to provide an image or something, but context is the main characters not completely understanding what they're doing in the grand scheme of things and exactly who they're working for and an outsider character is giving them advice. They're doing stuff that might have a negative influence on the world despite wanting to do good.

The 一人前に人助けをしている is what has confused. I don't really get what it means.

I've begun diving into hiragana today, and I'd say its not too hard
Once I can properly associate each symbol to the word, I think I can start memorizing kanji.

All three, really.

It is but it also isn't. That's a preconception which will unravel the more you read, as カタカナ in particular is used in a huge range of contexts, for "Japanese" words and for "foreign words".
It's a mish-mash. Certain things tend to have more of one over another but there aren't really too many hard and fast rules to bother worrying about. Point being, if there were they aren't something Japanese particularly care about. See pic related for a bunch of "in real life" examples of these different uses.

In that case, 一人前に人助けをしている seems rather clear cut as describing the potential misunderstanding they could be under, which may be dangerous. Think of the English rebuke "you think you're trying to help, but you're not". It encapsulates the action of one person 一人前 doing what they think is helping out (someone else) 人助けをしている which may be more negative than positive. Road to hell is paved in good intentions, and all that.
