Thoughts on this? Basically the author is saying that Mandarin teachers may be teaching tones the "wrong" way (referring diagram in pic related):

I think it's important for the tones to be learned independently first, especially for people who speak non-tonal languages, because they tend to be a bit of a headfuck.

What is the best city to teach English in, and why?

I've been reading and watching youtube videos to learn from other people's experience with China. Some creators I follow is ADVChina, SerpentZA, Laowhy86, Prozzie, Jayoe, etc. In addition, I've simply browsed many individual videos from other people on various different topics. I must admit, there is so much to learn about China (as a country, and a culture) that the videos are addicting; each one I watch I'm likely to learn something new.

Anyways, I've gathered that the general tradeoff is if you want less pollution, pick Southern China: Shenzhen looks to be the best here, maybe Chongqing or Chengdu. Shanghai is also interesting but I've read it's a bit too foreigner-influenced and getting to be crazy expensive) but if you'll have brutal heat for most of the year.
If you can't handle the heat, you'll have to put up with the pollution of Northern China. The cities here seem more interesting to me overall compared to the South, but the pollution really is a concern to me. I'm from a place in the northern US where the average pollution is about 10 units, so I think I'd rather suffer the heat than have typical days of 150+ units of pollution.

I haven't decided for sure to come to China, but if someone can 'sell' me on a particular city to try to find a good job in, I might start putting this daydream into motion.

It depends on your taste really. The North is closer to Chinese culturally. It's also mountainous and scenery is generally better which is good for trekking. The coastal cities (Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, Phan Thiet) is more touristy but there are plenty of resorts so it's good for relaxing.
The Mekong Delta has a little touch of Khmer culture. I'd go there for the food. Also check out Phu Quoc island.
Saigon is more westernized than Hanoi and features some upscale shopping malls, bars and entertainment. There are a lot of expats in District 1, too.

For me it's because I visited Taiwan and liked it there, so I ended up studying chinese there. Personally I think that simplified characters are ugly, but that didn't affect my decision to study in Taiwan, it is something that I found out later on.
