Posted this on /jp/ and was told here would be more appropriate-
So I have found a nice japanese girl online that lives in my country, and I have been studying Japanese for two years now at university, albeit a supplementary course but I'm around high-school level and achieved good results.
Would she be offended or impressed if I tried to contact her in Japanese? I feel I could at least hold conversation and ask her to meet up. She also has good English so there won't be any language barriers where my nihongo fails.
Secondly, do Japanese people still use はじめまして and よろしくお願いします when they speak online or are there less formal ways to open conversation that are still not offensive to her?
I don't know much informal Japanese as my course primarily focuses on a polite foundation.

I am currently considering a job offer in Tokyo. it's ¥12 million per year plus a housing allowance (up to 50% of monthly rent or ¥100,000, whichever is higher) and a commuting allowance of up to ¥50,000 per month. What sort of standard of living could I expect on that sort of money in Tokyo?

I'm currently on £67,000 in the UK (Cambridge, not London, so it's a bit cheaper) in case anyone has experience of both areas. I'd probably go over £70,000 this year at my current place if I don't go with the Tokyo offer but it's not guaranteed.

Honestly it seems like a fantastic offer but I'm a bit wary of cultural differences and other issues. I don't speak a word of Japanese either.

The difference in salary is about 12,000 GBP per year, so 1,000 GBP per month. You can spend 2,000 GBP on rent per month, getting half of it covered by the allowance, and have roughly the same pay as you do in the UK.

Depending on variables like distance from the nearest station, ~300,000 yen/month can pretty handily get you a modern and relatively up-scale (but not luxurious or big) apartment in a nice middle-class area. Of course you can compromise on all sorts of things (cheaper area, smaller, older, further from station, etc.) and save a lot of this money, or you might trade in quality and size for being right in the middle of the city; it's up to you to figure out what sort of balance is best.

The more convenient your location, the less of a commuting allowance you'll need. Unless you're saving a lot on rent, or moving around a lot during the day, you're unlikely to need 50,000 yen per month.

Other necessities typically aren't too expensive (actually a lot of them are cheaper), and income tax is lower. So your money will go further and you can save more. Even if you are frugal, without having to pay much attention to budgeting, you should be able to live a comfortable life while keeping enough money aside for savings and a bit of recreation.

The only other thing to consider is that there will be a big whack of initial expenses in terms of furnishings and the like.

You should be able to get used to cultural differences. Japan is different, but it's a first-world country with a relatively familiar social structure.

Language will likely be a problem - find out what sort of help your employer can offer, and perhaps look in to your options for learning a bit.

I imagine so, but I could just rent something more expensive than 200,000 and get the 100,000 back, no?

I'm not really a fan of huge cities though, I feel very comfy at Cambridge. That's another reason to feel anxious about the transition for me.

It seems like a good progression career-wise though I'm not sure if it would be easy to progress from there. Right now I'm pretty mobile and go to loads of conferences; I'm not sure if Japanese business would allow me the same. I don't see many of them at the conferences I've been attending.

Honestly, neither am I, in theory. In practice, however, you can develop a "bubble" that blocks out noise, crowds, etc., thanks to which the experience isn't really any worse than living anywhere else.
