The biggest problem is the downtime and unreliable energy storage on large scales. I've heard that they're making strides thanks to electric cars but it's slow going

The only way for Solar energy to become efficient and enough to power anything is if it's located in space itself, but we're not a Type 2 civilization yet.
On Earth however, solar and wind energy kills local wildlife and has enormous economical and environmental impact, but it's ignored because it's "green".
