翻訳の質問があります。

in this thing i'm translating, a group of kids are talking and one says 「俺偉くなって…」 followed a little while after by (for context) 「俺、王様になるんだ!」
someone responds 「王様って偉いの?」

the (generally sloppy) given translations are "i'll become really rich" and "is a king rich?" which i don't think is accurate – but i can see where they're coming from because a "king" is in question. i'm thinking of using 'great' or even just 'famous' but it's sort of hard to capture the nuance that 偉い implies.

I have been recently thinking passive form could be translated into "to get -ed", I am not sure, though.
ex.
犬を噛む
I bite a dog. I will bite a dog.

犬に噛まれる
I am bitten by a dog. I get bitten by a dog. I will get bitten by a dog.

I am not sure which sounds good, "to be -ed" or "to get -ed". But passive form in Japanese sentece stands for the action, I think. So "to get -ed" is more appropriate, I guess.

Just finished 黒, I highly recommend it. It's an excellent manga story-wise, and as far as reading difficulty goes it felt like a perfect step up after finishing よつばと! It's mostly not too difficult, but there are one or two more difficult pages that offered just enough of a challenge for me (pic related).

Now to find something else to read.

Do you guys know a good list of Japanese words with their English translation? I found this one some time ago https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:1000_Japanese_basic_words but I noticed a few mistakes, so I ended up not using it. Learning words by using flashcards just doesn't work out for me and I'd prefer to learn words before learning how to write them.

How to start thinking like a Japanese to finally get into their sentence structure? I can create correct sentences, but it takes me a very long time, figuring out the word order.

Can someone tell me the meaning of で in this sentence, and the meaning of と as well? What would the whole sentence be if she didn't cut it off?

I was taking a class and one day a Japanese guy walked by and talked with my teacher, she later set us up in a language exchange and we did that for a while until he returned to Japan. Before he left he had a going away party where apparently the only Canadians he actually met were me and this other girl. He also met at least 15 other Japanese.

And I've been in a literal snowball, island hopping effect since then. Japanese seem to be very social with other Japanese but shy otherwise.

I also met people by leaving those little notes on library bulletin boards looking for language exchange. I also joined quite a large meet up group that is really well managed, meet tons of people there, learners and Japanese.

I've been to the meet up maybe 5 or 6 times total, sometimes is quite a large group, 20+. We usually have groups of about 4 and rotate every 30min or so. Sometimes I'm thrown into groups of 3 other Japanese just staring me down expecting to be taught English and it's incredibly intimidating, other groups I end up with another native English speaker who says they are learning but only really know how introduce and say です a lot so I get no practice.

But man, you get a good group with balance and patience and it's awesome and I haven't met any who aren't accepting of you trying to learn. Took a long time to get confidence.

Never tried Skype but video chat feels awkward to me, I encourage you to try meet ups, if you make a friend there and do stuff together you will learn a lot.

If it's a story, they will generally add some furigana to the name the FIRST time it shows up per volume. So you better memorize that if you want to know a character's name throughout the whole thing.

Unless it's a name that doesn't vary that much, case in which they will just assume you speak Japanese and know what's its obvious pronunciation. Dictionaries help in that regard.

What about after the second kanji, as in 佐々木? Maybe it alternates: き、ぎ、き、etc.
On a more serious note, there are studied done on rendaku (this sound shift) this isn't a bad read to get a bit more of an understanding of these sound changes, though it ultimately boils down to getting used to patterns and learning exceptions. It isn't an exact science or set grammatical convention or anything.

There are exceptions like 伊藤, 後藤, 佐藤, which I think represent different branches of the 藤原 clan (ex. 伊藤 is the 伊勢 branch of the 藤原).

I can testify. Tried to learn some basic Chinese once and the first thing I tried studying was tones, because the concept was such a frightening thing.

That's like starting a Romance language with verb conjugations or Japanese with counters.

If I would study Mandarin nowadays, it'd be via vocabulary memorization, getting a feel for words instead of tones, and THEN piecing it together. Listening and repeating is a hundred times more relevant than knowing what tone a word has.

I mean, you need to kinda know what the four tones are just so you can learn vocabulary, because you wanna learn the tones with the word. But you're right that pronouncing them well just comes with lots of listening and repeating.

Anyway, I think being able to pronounce all the initials and finals correctly took longer and took much more actual study/looking through web pages about phonology than getting comfortable with tones did.

Every single native Mandarin speaker I've come across learning Japanese has absolutely no fucking handle on pronunciation and can't produce words correctly to save their life. That and muddling up words due to cross signalling with hanzi familiarity.
Being familiar with the characters would be great I'd assume, but when it comes to actually reading them and how they are used in Japanese, my experience with mandarin speakers is a comedy of association errors combined with spastic accents. Frequently introducing out of place tonal shift with words and keeping that rapid 'bumpy' monomoraic delivery found in Chinese.
Imagine coming across a language which on the surface appeared a lot like English, only being told that the "letters" are pronounced in a fundamentally different way.
Then again, they also did a pretty shit job at English.

I'm not exactly mining (as in taking words from reading material), but going by a kanji list.
I have used Kanji Word Association Tool to generate 20 top definitions for each kanji I don't have in my Pokédex and I cross-reference that with a few online dictionaries to decide which words are the most useful in reflecting a kanji's meaning and possible readings.
I try not to go for too obscure shit, but sometimes it happens. KWAT prints the word frequency as well, so it is a little easier to pick.

This sentence here is confusing the shit out of me (specifically, the use of the passive and the は~に~ structure). Consider this sentence:

Shouldn't よつばはとーちゃんに怒られた mean "Yotsuba was angered by Dad" then? Or for the whole sentence, something like "when I get angered by Dad, I feel downhearted"

Instead the English translation is "I get sad if I make dad mad" which mindfucks me, because this is the opposite of what my mind thinks it should be. If it's really "make dad mad," why doesn't she use causative? Anyway, I don't understand the grammar here.

I think that most anything that ends in u, you can pronounce it as just the consonant. Some people may pronounce the u when emphasizing or if you're pronouncing everything slowly. Like 早く can sound like "hayaku" or "hayak", but there's not mush of a distinction between them in Japanese. Similar to the pronunciation of らりるれろ.

I've been having trouble recently with the use of の in certain situations, I hope one of you guys can help me with this.
Sometimes after a verb, I see a の with a noun after it. For example, (From うる星やつらOP):

I see this translated as "I dream all about you." This looks a little strange to me. If it was just 夢見るあなたのすべて it sounds like "All about you who dreams" which doesn't seem right, so the の must be doing something there.
I thought that it was a contraction of のは as in 夢見るのはあなたのすべて which sounds more correct, but I don't want to make that assumption. Is the 夢見る becoming a pseudo-noun, making the direct translation "all about you, of (my) dreams." or something like that? I've also seen this outside of song lyrics.

Dumb noob question.

According to this image of 4chan lore, /b/ was named /b/ because "booryaku", which they state as being Japanese for "random". The hiragana they give for this (as best I can biologically OCR it) is のおりゃく (nooryaku), which seems ... wrong. When I "correct" it to ぼおりゃく, that also seems wrong.

Looking at jisho.org I am not having any luck finding a translation for random that starts as b-.

Am I missing something here? Is this image bait? Or am I just retarded?
