Yes although controversially, most would like to see it downgraded to an optional subject. It's also taught very poorly and examined in a way where someone could with a 12 year olds knowledge of it could pass the final ordinary paper.

>Are there any people who try to use it in their day language?
It's like our own Amish community in the sense that there are people in certain pockets of the middle of nowhere who apparently do it. The vast majority of us have never come in contact with those people so we just take it on faith that they actually exist.

>>74382965
no. If you haven't learned something in school that's because school isn't built to learn you something, but to filter out people that are not in wageslave mindset. Yanks that learn it over the course of a few months do it by learning words and reading texts. Schools don't do that but instead force you to do chores about learning grammar, which is only important to learn when you don't learn it through reading texts or want to improve what you have learned through texts
>>
>>74383115
Only Maths and English should be mandatory for Leaving Cert since they're vital skills for everyday life. The rest should be options based on an individual.
I don't mind Irish being retained for the Junior Cert since that doesn't actually matter and already has shite like CSPE there.
>>
>>74383186
pretty good and well informed post here
>>
>>74382965
I agree that the language isn't spoken due to the high degree of apathy in which it's considered, but I have a distinct memory of when and how Irish passed me by and that was in primary school when I realised I had no idea what sibh, sinn, siad etc. were or how to use them and the teacher wasn't going to stop to specifically help me and that I'd never understand them.

That's when I gave up on Irish.

Also I think children start learning it to early, when they barely have a grasp of English as is, and the structure of Irish is subsequently confusing.
>>
>>74382871
realistically the only way we'd ever have a fluent population would be to convert every primary school to a Gaelscoil. These schools teach everything in Irish and the children come out fluent at 12
>>74383039
the majority of subjects are useless if you have that view. Children are dumb and must be taught what adults deem appropriate

>I think children start learning it to early
You're supposed to learn it early. Do you think they wait until you're 15 or 16 before teachin you English in Germany or Norway?

The entire point of the language is to learn it early on, so you get used to differentiating between them and you don't need to "translate" from one language to the other in a conversation but that it will flow between the two parties.

Those are optional subjects for LC so they don't have to be useful for everyone, they are certainly useful for someone. >which is difficult for most
It takes no longer than 15-20 minutes to learn the rules, maybe a day or two of practice.

The VSO is understandably difficult, which is hy you want kids to learn it young rather than "waiting" as you've proffered. A 4 year old can speak Irish if that's the language they're raised with. The rules become innate for them.

A 14 year old learning Irish will have a significantly tougher time learning it, since they have to sit down and actually try to learn the rules.

Like I've said before, the reason you don't speak Irish is because you're not fucked speaking it. It has nothing to do with it being tough, nothing to do with it being "irrelevant". You're just passing the buck because you're too lazy to learn it.
>>
>>74384719
Because our society was forced into English rather than Irish. We were severed from our language and left with the bastard tongue of some foreigners in our mouths.

Do you have no pride in Ireland or the Irish? Do you not wish you could read An Lebor Gebala Éirinn? Do you not want to understand the stories of Tír na nÓg as they were written? Have you no fucking shame in not even being able to speak your own language?

The only argument you've put forth is "corporations:(" which is an absolutely lie, as if someone speaking Irish means they can't also speak German or French (it in fact makes it easier to learn those languages).

You're either depressed about having to learn Irish for the upcoming leaving cert, or you're simply a Seonín.

Speaking Irish as never been a part of living in Ireland in my lifetime.

No, not particularly interested in the Arts or reading ancient stories in any language.

>Have you no fucking shame in not even being able to speak your own language?
English is my language.

Oh, I understand why that post may have seemed a bit ominous as a final post. That wasn't my intention though.

After logging into the Brazilian's Pass (a fucking stupid thing to do in retrospect, but my curiosity got the better of me), I got spooked when people started talking in the thread about him being a potential doxxer. Considering that I'd already had a pretty shit week up to that point, I just wasn't in the mood for potentially being doxxed. So I ended up logging off for the night and going to bed early. The next morning I decided to take a break from /éire/ for a while. It was just as well because this week is proving to be really busy at work, so I've no time to shitpost. And I'm spending most my spare time sorting out stuff for moving back to Ireland at the end of the month (lost a month of prepaid rent for June). I had initially intended to stay away from here until I was back in Ireland so that I could start posting anonymously again, but I sorta floated back here tonight because I was on /a/ reading about the nyaa drama.

Kenny hated him so much that he appointed Deasy's running mate as a junior minister who later lost his seat in the last election. Sorry if my paranoia scared you, the brazilians behaviour just seemed weird and I thought you should be on guard. In all likelihood he was probably harmless and not the same guy.
You are correct though that being recognisable will bring a level of attention from certain people. It's not really your fault though because of flags.

as much a meme as the scouse or any other way of saying things within England itself
saying we speak Hiberno-English is a sort of lazy nationalism trying to swap out the necessity to learn the Irish language (the necessity to nationalism that is, not necessarily to your own material comfort, wouldn't want to trigger the west brits)

In the picture is an apple tree, I'm not sure what kind but I know they're cooking apples, not eating apples. It shouldn't even be producing fruit since there's no other flowering apple trees around, maybe someone over the road has one.
My own apple tree which still doesn't flower or produce fruit yet.
There were some berry bushes planted last year but they didn't take off. We're thinking of planting some more later in the year.
There's some blackberry bushes in the area though but they're not in the garden.

and saying that ireland has a unique dialect of english (with an irish substratum, mind you!) does not make you a west brit or an anti-irish language person. it's simply a fact.
and what kind of basis for your argument is scouse? it's not even arguable that scouse is a distinct dialect of english. and scottish english is also a dialect of english. if you think a language has to be as distinct from english as scots (a "dialect" which isn't even mutually intelligible to most english speakers), then there's only two dialects of english: scots and "other".
>>74389214
scots isn't even considered a dialect by anyone who knows anything about it. scottish english is a dialect of english but scots is a lot different therefrom. and it was considered a "sister language" of english before unionism became a driving force in great britain.
in short: considering hiberno english to not be a dialect of english is retarded, scots is a language, and scouse is also a dialect of english.

I call it a dialect because I've not a reason not to, the UK government did because of Scot butthurt

>Notwithstanding the UK government's and the Scottish Executive's obligations under part II of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, the Scottish Executive recognises and respects Scots (in all its forms) as a distinct language, and does not consider the use of Scots to be an indication of poor competence in English.

it is totally the same, the dialect is an irrelevancy as I tried to explain when I described the variation of the language within England itself with such things as the scouse dialect

2% mark is what you need to reach in order to receive State electoral funding of €250k a year.

If I was being truthful with you, barring any catastrophic fuck up on the NP's part and depending on the outcome of the FG leadership race/Renua's "return", I'd place it in the 3-5% mark

If we had one big constituency electing 11 MEPs they'd have a good chance, sadly we have a 3 seater Dublin, 4 seater Munster/South Leinster and 4 seater Connacht/Ulster/rest of Leinster, which will split their vote, the best chance for them is in the Connacht/Ulster/Rest of Leinster constituency in my opinion.

The NP is also running in Northern Ireland, so there'd be 4 potential MEPs.

Coming out with a stronger "reform Europe" platform would probably get them a seat or two. Even if they don't get an MEP seat, the simple publicity during the campaign would be invaluable.

Whoever FG elect as their new leader will be someone who is a Europhile and globalist as Varadkar said today, or Coveney who's Sutherland's poodle, those are the two most likely contenders anyway, and Donohue is similar enough to them too, that's nothing that will take from the NP'. Renua are completely dead, they lost pretty much everyone involved with them, and their leader is now John Leahy, a councillor who was elected as an Independent in 2014 in Offaly, and is trying to revive them with almost no structure now.
>>74391656
>The NP is also running in Northern Ireland
Nice, another party who is across the island. I think there's only three seats there though, though they could sneak a last there if it's one Unionist, one Nationalist and one other. I agree about the publicity thing though, they will get that like Libertas got in 2009, where Ganley missed the last seat in Connacht/Ulster, but they had no base to channel that into afterwards.

Speaking of MEPs, does anyone know what in the fuck is going on with Brian Crowley (South MEP)?
He was elected in 2014 and apparently hasn't voted or attended a single session in parliament. All the while he is claiming expenses, paid something like €25,000 to his brother to rent a "constituency office", and has like 4 assistants, all based in Cork, none of them in Europe.
Sounds like a massive joke, and no one is reporting on it.

I think the ship has sailed for the National Party or any sort of far right party. Public opinion here seems to be turning far more towards "fuck the brits" and "fuck farage" than turning against the EU. The carrot of a provision for a united Ireland has really been the nail in the coffin for an anti-EU movement gaining any sort of traction among nationalists.

>>
>>74391975
He's persistently ill , he also defected from FF over to the far right almost immediately after being elected. A lot of his voters are really disappointed and disillusioned in him so he doesn't have a hope of returning.
>>
>>74391975
>does anyone know what in the fuck is going on with Brian Crowley (South MEP)?
He's physically not fit to go there, he gets a significant portion of his vote via a sympathy vote because he's in a wheelchair sine he was about 20, he's been ill since 2014.
The other thing with him is that he was put there as a safe FF seat when they weren't doing as well, but he swiched from the ALDE group to the ECR too, which pissed off the FF organisation. If he's not fit to go there FF should replace him with someone else.
>>74392068
No that's him.

Surely they can't do that without his consent? If a TD defects from their party during the course of a government the party can't simply replace them.

Umm think Kingrose is an exceptionally intelligent defender for his age in the 13 channel and is clearly the future considering Payne is over 30. Payne could never do this: https://youtube.com/watch?v=RL_IHflsD1k

Shit, didn't realise that he left the party too, I guess they can't remove him then, he's just claiming money then. I thought FF kept him because they thought they would need him in the future.

They're the one the Conservatives in the UK and Law and Justice in Poland are part of, there's more meme right wing groups than them, like the ENF and the EFD which consist of the typical "far right" parties in Europe.
>>
>>74392240
Heaven
>>
>>74391892
The point about the FG leadership contest isn't about their outlook on Europe, more of their outlook generally.

NP seems to be leaning towards the rural vote (Renua would likely lean towards the upper class urban vote). Coveney could easily stitch up the rural vote but lose the urban vote, Vradkar would do well urban but poorly in rural areas (Coveney is more popular).

Yeah, I don't really see Renua as a credible opponent - they've lost two councillors even after trying to rebrand. The party is a shambles.

>Declan Ganley
I wonder if he's actually interested in getting involved in National Party. He could probably bring a lot of influence to bear, he could probably head up the NP presence in Europe.

He seems to align with the NP on a range of issues.
>>
>>74392338
I think maybe if Sinn Fein, Labour, FF ever end up in government. The right wing will have a chance but only if all these planets align.
>>
>>74392059
The NP isn't far right, nor is it anti-EU, it's "reform the EU". Which most people agree needs to happen.
>>74392263
He didn't join a ""far-right"" party, he joined a right-wing party that the Tories led. UKIP was a far-right party, the Tories are simply right-wing.
>>
>>74392696
I mean, considering that we had an actual fascist party once that didn't do anything but take a holiday to Spain.
>>
>>74392594
Declan Ganley isn't even for nationalism. He's not even for leaving the EU. He was for reforming it into a more pro business entity. I watched a documentary on him last year.
>>
>>74392814
The Blueshirts literally formed Fine Gael with the Protestants and Cumann na nGaedheal, you historically illiterate fuck.

>>74392879
>He's not even for leaving the EU
Neither is the National Party. Ganley is still pro-life, the NP is pro-life.
>>
>>74392814
Rise of UKIP, Trump, Le Pen and others was because the left wing governments could provide an alternative that worked economically. Even with all the terrorist attacks, I still think the economy has the most sway.
>>
>"Peter will not marry Paul in Northern Ireland," Mr Wells told the Belfast Telegraph last month. In an interview with the Ulster Herald, Mr Buchanan said he would give deep consideration to his future in the party if it failed to veto same-sex marriage with petition of concern.

Lads when did you realise that the Unionists are unironically the best fitting ally for a conservative Catholic?

If they got over their orangeheadedness, they'd be a great ally.
