other Han Communities are always ambivalent and cautious about them. They're just arrogant, calculative (to the extreme) and think they are far superior then the rest of the Hans and never do they integrate well.
Apparently generations of assimilation within the dialect groups since our forefathers first step foot in Malaya as coolies didn't change a damn thing at all. While the rest of the Han dialects unify as a much stronger Chinese community over the years, the Hakkas on the other hand...

Nah all schools in Singapore teach in English. There's nothing special about being in a Hokkien Clan school, just that they are included in a subset of schools that provide a focus on the Chinese culture. So most students accepted into these schools are Chinese, and we learn extra stuff that normal schools don't usually teach, revolving around Chinese traditions and stuff.

>BEIJING — When the pandemonium of the Cultural Revolution erupted, he was a slight, softly spoken 13-year-old who loved classical Chinese poetry. Two years later, adrift in a city torn apart by warring Red Guards, he had hardened into a street survivor.

>His father, a senior Communist Party official who had been purged a few years earlier, was seized and repeatedly beaten. Student militants ransacked his family’s home, forcing the family to flee, and one of his sisters died in the mayhem. Paraded before a crowd as an enemy of the revolution and denounced by his own mother, the future president of China was on the edge of being thrown into a prison for delinquent children of the party elite.

>The father, battered and disoriented after years of isolation and interrogation, “looked at his two grown boys, and totally failed to recognize them,” according to his father’s biography, citing an interview with Mr. Xi. The older man wept, and Mr. Xi offered him a cigarette.

>"He asked me, ‘How come you also smoke?’” Mr. Xi said. “I said: ‘I’m depressed. We’ve also made it through tough times over these years.’

>"He went quiet for a moment and said, ‘I grant you approval to smoke.’”

did you guys see this video that went viral last week?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leFuF-zoVzA

It took place in Shenzhen, which to my extremely limited knowledge of China, is the city directly north of Hong Kong. I know that region of China is primarily Cantonese speaking, but since this video is made by a foreigner, I assume he learned, as almost all foreigners do, learned Mandarin (and not Cantonese).

If my assumptions are correct, how is he able to get by with Mandarin and not Cantonese?

Again, my knowledge on this is very limited and I'm probably making some overreaching assumptions here but I am curious
>>
>>73766786
they teach mandarin in schools
>>
>>73765139
No, but I'd make sure to learn as much practical Chinese before you get there, since it's pretty far from the major cities and I doubt most shop owners will know any English. Should be an ebin adventure, though.

Once you get settled in, if you have time, take a trip to Chongqing or Wuhan.
>>
>>73766786
IIRC, Mandarin has been pushed as the lingua franca down there for quite some time. Also, a lot of people from other parts of China head down there to work. I know a few people in Guangdong province, but most of them are actually from other provinces. However, some of them still learned some Cantonese.

Manchus, Japanese, Koreans and Beijing Ren are all technically Shandongese. Also, Confucius was a Shangdonger and ancient Shandong has loads of white blood (google Linzi western) and their diet very similar to westerners hence being the tallest in Asia as well as the smartest

People seem to forget how fucked it was in China in the 90's. There just happens to be more pm 2.5 nowadays because of the cars and giant cities.

Relative to 2010-2013 the pm 2.5 air pollution has improved 10-20%.

But the south and eastern provinces have done way better than JJJ and the central provinces.

hmm i see. at least in their current situation they can only move forward. nuclear power in this day and age is the most cost effective power source we have and if they abruptly stop their progress, its a further setback. a disaster on the scale of chernobyl would be extremely rare and highly unlikely with current technology.
>>
>>73783641
They don't really sound like the normal tones at all when listening to singing, although the melody can be crafted to kind of hint at some aspects of the tones (such as dropping in pitch when going from a tone 1 to a tone 3 word) but it's not reliable. So it's not really like it sounds like something else, just that there's more ambiguity and you have to guess more from context (or just look at subs)

I'm 100% against anti-China fearmongering le bubble memes, but outside the NDRC and inner Politburo, China's government is just as retarded as my own. And definitely not democratic

I disagree.

The vast majority of nuclear power plants today are still generation II or worse. Something less worse than Fukushima could happen any day, and that'd be the final nail in the coffin.

The reality is that alternative energy and natural gas is killing nuclear. Simple short-term pursuit of profit. If the industry can't fix that, we'll have another Westinghouse.

sadly that is true, one more accident on a relatively large scale will be nuclear power's ultimatum.

that is a good point; renewable energy companies lobby for oil power as it is needed for the production of wind and solar instruments. comparably, this is also the case with natural gas as that is usually the proxy power in case the wind or solar plants fail. both alternative energy and natural gas companies have huge profit in the production of oil which is depressing.

not sarcasm. tho the decision-making process can't be described as democratic, the whole bureaucracy can at least avoid a JUST event now
for instance, when central committee are making a decision, they will firstly hand the proposal down to Standing Committee of the National People's Congress then to the related institutions in NPC. The related institutions then will hold all kind of hearings for think tanks, professionals in the related fields and
civil representatives. Then reports of all the meetings and hearings will be hand back to Standing Committee of NPC and Central Committee. Then the central committee or poliburo will have a meeting being taken charge of by a senior commissioner who have background knowledges in the area. There are a lot of similar processed in decisionmaking. That's why I say they can at least avoid a JUST event

I've got some money saved and I'm looking at moving to Tianjin to study mandarin for as long as I can. I'm a complete beginner- but have been in China for a month in the past.

How easy is this kind of thing to do?

A lot of the mandarin courses I've looked at list the teaching medium as 'chinese'. They write about the course as though it's taught in english, it's on an english website, and it'd be strange to teach Chinese in Chinese I'm assuming? If someone who's done a Chinese language could clarify what they mean by this I'd be very grateful.

Any information about Chinese language courses in general would be really helpful

>Government makes progress in restraining runaway credit growth

>Debt financing expanded about 12 percent, roughly on par with nominal GDP growth, said William Adams, senior international economist at PNC Financial Services Group in Pittsburgh, who previously worked for the Conference Board in Beijing. In recent years, overall debt growth had been expanding faster than the overall economy.

>"This is a big deal," he said. "The gap between nominal GDP growth and credit growth was often cited as the strongest quantitative argument that China’s growth model is unsustainable. If credit growth remains moderate as it has been since mid-2015, and nominal GDP growth continues at its current pace or picks up, this vulnerability in China’s growth model will seem less urgent."

I have no idea, they were businessmen having lunch with an aussie associate. The Aussie looked embarrassed when they started acting like animals, and he tipped me extra at the end for putting up with their shit. Another thing, Chinese NEVER tip (unless they're Aussie born). Fuck that shithole.

I thought tipping was just an American thing? Did /int/ lie?
>>

No, Americans just take it to the extreme and tip literally everyone including cab drivers.

In Australia and most other countries tips are expected at high end restaurants, or when you receive good service.

>The Chinese Language Program of Tianjin University offers Chinese language courses of eight levels covering beginners and advanced learners.
>Students are arranged according to the results of Chinese placement test at the beginning of the semester.
according to the link you posted here before, there are placement tests and beginner level curriculum. It's not like they are gonna teaching beginners directly in Mandarin.

Are you actually Chinese? If so tell more Chinese about this place so we can get more posters pls

>>73826689

Yes

>tell more Chinese about this place so we can get more posters
a lot of Chinese lurking here tho but can't post because there are all kind of obstacles like being unable to get google captcha, ip being range banned by 4chan and posts randomly got blocked by great firewall. It's almost harder than landing the moon

Real shame. Is there a Chinese 4chan equivalent? I remember one being linked over a year ago but I can't find it now.

It's all based on the individual m8

It's just like how some burgers are ignorant/rude but at the same time my fellow burger classmates in my Chinese classes can discuss Chinese economic development and read classical Chinese poetry
