I would say start with writing freely, until you build agility and familiarity with the different types of kanji. Focus on quantity, getting mileage.

After that you start to worry about fitting everything inside a box.

Either that or use a more detailed grid and refer to radical types/positions, but that may look stiff for a good while.

I think it needs to be 唯一の気にしている国

Geez, I can't wait for /int/ DJT to become unsustainable so we can all join the fun over the superior DJT.

It's hilarious how some people here seem intent on cultivating a one-sided rivalry with the /jp/ thread. You should have at least posted that before those posts were deleted.

そう、母の墓は本当に小さくて、日本の墓地の中でもさらに見つけることが複雑なくらいかわいらしいものだった。
Really. Her grave was so little... even among the more modest graves in that cemetery back in Japan, it was hard to find.

From "A Little Darkness" by Yoshimoto Banana.

かわいらしいものだった is confusing me. Is かわいらしい describing the mother's grave?

母の墓は本当に小さくて
The mother's grave was really small
日本の墓地の中でもさらに見つけることが
furthermore, searching for the grave in a even a Japanese cemetery...
複雑なくらいかわいらしいものだった
??? To the extent of searching for it being difficult, it was lovely.

Delusional. Dishonest! Maybe, just maybe, dumb.

>>73430742
8ch? At any rate, I'd rather integrate with the Japanese Thread than with /jp/ at this point. It's impressive what one monkey, one hobbit and one kraut can do to a thread.
>>
>>73431667
One-sided because you and a few other posters seem genuinely bitter that /jp/ is "stealing your traffic" or whatever, so you choose to whine about /jp/ instead of doing something about the lack of activity. Meanwhile, whenever someone mentions /int/ in the /jp/ thread it's the usual "I don't like your posts and I don't like /int/ so I think you should go there" thing.

>Dishonest!
He says after posting a screencap of deleted posts which was only intended as meta flamebait.

>>
Off topic question: If someone who knows Japanese starts to learn Chinese, does he have to learn new meanings of the *individual* characters?
>>
>>73432303
He says after posting "meta flamebait".

Where do you see me complaining about "stolen traffic"? They only survive easily because the board is slow, the traffic itself is about the same and /int/ DJT's pace is perfect in terms of browsing it - the only downside being the constant 404s.
What do you even mean by "doing something", and how can you tell I do/did nothing to help DJT? Or do you want me to go up to eleven and spam DJT over Reddit?

>blablabla deleted!
The fact that mod intervention is frequently needed says enough. This ramble of mine you're calling one-sided would also be deleted over there, so it's not an argument to say having shit redacted makes it inexistent.
We don't have those retards shitting things up over here, in a no man's board that is practically /b/ with flags. What can that possibly mean?
>>
>>73431172

>Is かわいらしい describing the mother's grave?

Yes, but it is probably more alluding to its smallness than cuteness (or maybe the Japanese don't necessarily differentiate?). I'm not going to pretend to be completely well acquainted with the word, but I trust this translator gave his interpretation in that way for a reason.

Like Rubin recommended, it can be helpful to take the くらい clause and the main clause and put them in a "so, that" construction: "It was so tiny, that finding it was complex/difficult"

>>73431367

I feel that, the more you understand the better. I would put forth that using Japanese subtitles, stopping and re listening to phrases, playing at a slower speed at tough parts, rewatching the same episodes, etc etc is preferable.
>>
>>73431367
What >>73433176 said. Having subs is always nice, although not always possible.
Also, don't bother watching raw anime if you only get 20% of what's being said, at least in terms of vocabulary.
>>
>>73433148
>posting
Nah, just replying to, which is admittedly almost as bad.

>Where do you see me complaining about "stolen traffic"?
I am not referring to you in particular, but a subset of posters, for instance this guy who, two threads (or one and a half, I don't even know anymore) ago, started ranting about /jp/ after I suggested some changes we could make to attract more new posters (which, by the way, is what I mean by "doing something"): >>73311772

>They only survive easily because the board is slow, the traffic itself is about the same
There are usually over 100 unique IPs there.

>and /int/ DJT's pace is perfect in terms of browsing it - the only downside being the constant 404s.
The current pace is what causes threads to die prematurely, unless you're one of those retards who bump the thread with meaningless drivel when it's about to fall off the board (aka "I don't want the thread to die but I'm too lazy to start relevant discussion so someone please do it for me".)

>The fact that mod intervention is frequently needed says enough.
What does it say, exactly? Mod intervention is also needed in this thread when people start discussing /pol/shit that has nothing to do with the Japanese language, but it doesn't happen. So what?

>This ramble of mine you're calling one-sided would also be deleted over there, so it's not an argument to say having shit redacted makes it inexistent.
Yes, because meta shit is not on-topic, and you would be doing everyone a huge favor if you used the ghost board to post it instead of littering the thread.

The fact that you lurk a thread you dislike just because it's called DJT says enough. Get the fuck over it.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about the relationship between cuteness, smallness, humbleness, etc. Maybe didn't help that jisho.org defined かわいらしい as "lovely; sweet".

I'll go back and read the くらい part again. I can't stand Rubin's use of romaji though.

Since the last thread seems to have died young, I'll repost this one more time. For the in the Canadian anon or the Argentine anon -or anyone, really- who were talking about this a few days ago:

I've put together a deck based on a word frequency report from the Japanese words for the English, etc. military terms found on page two of the following spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WoXwGHZc8qMk0WyJs1xnW7AigD60GVI99X_B9zQyyCE/htmlview

I didn't use the direct entries but instead the most frequently occurring words, which I was able to generate readings, definitions and example sentences from, using Epwing2Anki and the 5th edition 研究社 dictionary. Pic related is an example card. Deck without fonts is below:
https://my.mixtape.moe/fzwehh.apkg

Fonts to place in Anki collection.media folder, if you want them:
https://my.mixtape.moe/mjehrb.zip
>>
>>73439321
The source of that was all the entries from:
http://www.gunjieigo.com/軍事用語英和辞書/
>>
Should I use core 2k6k optimised or 2k6k10k further optimized?
>>
The latter deck is the same as the former deck only with more words and ultimately more flexibility. If you were just starting one, I would suggest the 10k deck, even if you only end up using the 6k portion of it. That way if you every want to use the remaining 4ish thousand words, the option is there and easy.

Feedback is appreciated.

I will need help with elaborating on grammar study, since this is a part where I have little experience (in Japanese).

A few methods I can think of:
- Book exercises;
- Flashcards;
- Drilling Duolingo (are Rosetta Stone and Memrise the same?);
- Watching Video-lessons;

It's hard to really see the goals/end goals here, anyone minds sharing their journey with grammar so far?

Also, is this following division I've put in the introduction enough to classify things?
- Graded (N5-N1)
- Advanced
- Slang

I don't even know what I mean by "advanced", maybe anything that is not informal (Slang) nor present in JLPT due being advanced even for natives.
I can only proceed with feedback this time around.

Even Redditors think Rosetta Stone is shit for Japanese so I don't think it should be included.
>>
>>73442304
I was thinking more about the method itself (simple input exercises), not specific softwares.
I have to check whether LanguagePod works like that as well.

But yeah, these are at most a way to get familiarized with the language, in terms of learning it's meh.

You're still at it? Kudos, anon!
>>
>>73439321
Themed decks are interesting.
I'm thinking of sorting all my vocabulary into tables based on themes, to look for gaps in my knowledge.

Are there RPG decks, net slang decks, sexual decks, etc?
>>
>>73443987
It was a Canadian anon who came up with the idea, I just found a data source and organised it a little. Still hoping to have some contact with the actual anon/s who were doing this because it was merely an exercise in trying to lend a hand to an anon for me. Aside from military vocab, I'm not sure what he is after, so it can be tailored to fit. At the moment what I've arranged it rather generic.

>>73444303
>Are there RPG decks, net slang decks, sexual decks, etc?
Not entirely sure but it is a matter of finding a half decent reference and from there not all that difficult to put together your own.

Does anyone have good sources of "side by side" documents of N5 level text and the English translation? I've realized I'm learning a lot faster at this stage from core10k example sentences than wading through chokochoko extremely slowly.

I could just browse Tatoeba, but I figure it will be inconsistent with difficulty, and maybe start to become boring.

Well, "erection," "insertion," and "ejaculation" are technical terms, you don't often hear them in porn, despite what amateur porn translators would have you believe.

>I could just browse Tatoeba
The English with the Japanese Tatoeba example sentences are not reliable. The Japanese should be fine, as most of it comes from Japanese natives. This is also the reason why the English is not fine, because it comes from Japanese natives.

>you don't often hear them in porn
Aside from 勃起、every other term is littered throughout all the erotic manga I read, but that's written text. Wasn't aware they even spoke in JAV. Assumed it was all pit crew gunts and F1 cars.

Thanks - that's good to know. It seems like what I'm asking for is a really niche thing, so I'll ask instead: what did you start reading with as a noob? Did you use chokochoko?
>>
Examples in grammar books, reference guides, dictionaries, etc. while reading casually about the language. I put together most of my own study guide and learned a bunch simple for processing things. For leisure, I read manga. That's what really broke me into the written world of native media, and it was a hell of a struggle to begin with.
It was rather free form in the initial period while putting together things to pick apart and package for personal study, so there was a fair bit of structured and translation aided reading, meaning the gist of the language was understood before I started reading manga.
From memory, the first series I tried to read was alternating between スケッチブック and 苺ましまろ. The former was easier to look up words thanks to furigana but my comprehension was limited, mostly thanks to one of the characters using a dialect I could only make sense of by trying to see how it would fit into standard Japanese. Grocked the first two volumes of that before stopping and focusing entirely on 苺ましまろ. Only ended up reading the first volume and it took ages, as in 20+ minutes for a lot of the pages.
Don't remember much after that as I dropped Japanese for a while due to lifestyle issues but that covers my virginal steps into the cloister of Japanese as a language for comprehension and not just pretty imagery on billboards and signs in anime.

I would assume most anons do their own thing for a while before finding their feet and start to travel towards the same general direction that all learners drift towards.
>>
so i find it hard to study for 3 hours or more with my job and all, and I figured I always have a 2 hour ride to my work so why not use audio lessons for it.

I just wanted to ask how did audio lessons work for you? did it amplify your learning? Since its audio only, wouldnt you be learning subconsciously? and is that a good thing?
>>
>>73447597
Alright, thanks. I'm going to set a goal to get my feet wet and read some manga (possibly the ones you mentioned). It kind of struck me that I've been putting it off for some reason when you explained that.

Good luck learning Japanese!
>>
For people that have started a mining deck, do you add every word you come across that you don't know to it?
>>
>>73447918
My approach is likely unorthodox but it goes as following:
~read three or four manga series
~go back and reread said series, in the same order
~add words which needed to be looked up the second time around
>>
Why was djt moved here from /a/?
>>
>>73448031
All generals were purged from /a/. Apart from the generals which weren't. :^)
>>
>>73447918
I usually only add a word if there's something about it I wouldn't have guessed, and only if it has a frequency number below 30,000
>>
>>73448010
Only the words that needed to be looked up a second time? I feel like the more important words would be for the best.
>>
>>73448253
The first time through I look things up and continue reading. Only on the second read through if I still need to look up those words will they be added to the mining deck. My reasoning is that often words are heavily repeated so I may look it up and add it the first time I read it, only to read it dozens of times later throughout the series. If by the next time I read back through the series and still need to look the word up then it is important enough to mine.
It isn't a way I'd recommend, it's merely the way I've become used to.
>>
>>73448104
>All generals were purged from /a/
Does that include Sakura Fish?
>>
>>73448010
Doesn't reading everything twice take forever? As if mining from manga wasn't enough of a hassle already
>>
>>73448305
Yeah, I was thinking of just mining words I come across again that I don't know of too. I'm not really reading manga right now, but I feel like it'd be hard to mine every word from a visual novel.

>>73448360
For him I'm not sure. But for me, as an intermediate / beginner generally it takes me like 30 minutes to get through a chapter. That's not a bad pace at all.
