Yea, that is pretty much the same word just pronounced slightly different. Honestly, a Mexican-born person might pronounce it the same way. Changing from an s to a j is a pretty drastic change in English, though.

It reminds me of a similar incident that happened in the different city of the same prefecture (Chiba) in 2008.

A 5 years old girl was found dead naked. She was strangled. A young guy with intelligence disability living nearby the kidnapping scene was arrested, convicted and imprisoned. It was controversial because there seemed to be no hard evidence and Japanese police are notorious for arresting social outcasts when the investigations of the incidents come to the dead ends.
