For Norway anon, a list of manga series which I cannot find scans of or digital copies of on either 楽天 Amazon's Kindle版 version. If anyone else has scans of any of these series, if you could share them it would be excellent.

If anyone wants to know more about that list, it isn't random. A little while ago I started buying and ripping various manga I was interested in and noticed that a fair few of them were from the same publisher and magazines. Since then a more organised list was put together and in so I'm trying to put together a more specific branch of the manga part of the CoR, in a way.
Here is the spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jcn7Z4tbdRblEGnq6jzfW_sc-cOekTSs_N8z7mqb8Uc/edit?usp=sharing

It's been posted before but at that stage it was more of a random list of titles with download links. Some explanation:
First sheet 芳文社 is complete series and their information and download links. Everything from this page is published by 芳文社.
>First column:
link to an image of the series, usually a cover page to give you some idea of the artwork, etc.
>Second column:
manga series name.
>Third column:
Mangaka.
>Forth column:
this is what is in the download link. For example 1~9 means that the mega link will have volumes 1 to 9. Series with a yellowy coloured cell mean that it isn't complete.
>Fifth column:
the latest volume.
>Sixth column:
date of the latest published volume. It should be noticeable that volumes with a future publishing date are those series with a yellowy cell in the forth column. They will be updated once the volumes are released and available to buy/rip.
>Seventh column:
title of the magazine the manga was serialised in.
>Eight column:
publisher. It has a link to the series page on the publisher's website. Sometimes they aren't exactly the publisher because the series publication information is instead published on a related magazine website, like ドキドキビジュアル does with some of their きらら works instead of having it hosted on 芳文社.
>Ninth column:
mega co nz download link.
>>
>>72782101
The second sheet 他の出版社 is the same as the first sheet only the manga series are from different publishers. They are really only there because they were grabbed before the focus was decided to be exclusively on まんがタイムきらら related publications.
The third sheet 整理 is stuff that is being processed.
The fourth sheet 一覧表 is the other titles I'll be adding. Things will generally move from this sheet to the third sheet then to the first sheet once fully uploaded and up to date.
The reason this is being done is mainly because I tend to find these sorts of series entertaining and because I have an opinion that learning vocabulary and the more playful aspects of the language can be a lot more forgiving and accessible to learners in manga.
Depending on what is available online this may not take all that long to fully up. Once it's all up to date it isn't all that difficult to keep up to date, given how many of the series being serialised by these magazines are being published digitally. There are many titles with scan quality I'm not all that happy with and are planning to, perhaps starting sometime next year, bulk order series and personally scan them to have high quality scans available for myself and readers. That's further down the line due to being a several thousand dollar commitment with a bunch of logistics to sort out.

Hello mates!

I would like to ask if whether 500 kanji is a good base? and was also wondering how long did it take you to 'learn' the first 500?
>>
>>72782216
Count your vocab in words, not kanji. 500 kanji doesn't mean shit if you don't know words that use them.

Does watching japanese content with english subtitles actually help? it seems that the english subs mean a whole lot different than what is trying to be said in japanese, this applies to most japanese movies
>>
>>72786642
It helps if you already have some knowledge of Japanese. But as you said, subs are rarely - nor they should be - literal translations, so they won't help if you don't know what you're doing.
>>
>>72786642
far better to watch it with Japanese subs. with English subs you'll mostly just be reading the subs instead of paying attention to the japanese
>>
>>72786802
This is also true, the subs can distract you. I personally watch everything without subs and then I rewatch it with subs in case I didn't understand much. If the subs are there, my eyes just read them automatically and so I don't focus on listening.

Yes, but what was meant was that meds like the type the guy was using are only supposed to be used as a crutch, and shouldn't be used constantly. You're supposed to wean off them while fixing whatever problem you have, and the guy wasn't doing that. If you need a crutch your whole life without making an effort to fix yourself, then you would have been non-functional in any other era, and there are certainly issues to raise with that.

Right, maybe so but we don't live in a different era, do we? You're rambling on about arbitrary social darwinist prescriptions on a fucking beginners Japanese thread. The funny thing is we are most likely complete and total political allies, but I'll be damned if unorthodox politics doesn't attract some of the biggest autists on the Internet.

And the guy was derailing the thread talking about his anxiety medication, I'm sorry if my response to him triggered you, it was just better than telling him simply to fuck off to another board.
>>
>>72794549

You were making a normative claim about the man's use of psychosomatic medicine in the modern world based off of the survival of a different era; that certainly could be considered social Darwinism. I assume all of us here have the luxury of spending hours and hours learning the language of Asian island people, right? We're not exactly toiling away day after day perfecting our survival skills, nor are we training our brain for the so-called "natural world", testing our adaptation in a world our ancestors had to suffer, are we? Do we all need to just roll over and die because we couldn't make it in another "era"? Empirical data offers much better reasons to avoid psychosomatic medicine.

>And the guy was derailing the thread talking about his anxiety medication

It's been a few days, but I believe he was simply stating that he was either changing medication or was getting off medication, and he was having trouble staying motivated learning Japanese. Occasionally we can just provide some words of encouragement to our peers who wind up in the thread; we don't have to tell them to "fuck off". And the fact you were thinking that as an alternative to "you'd be dead in the good old days" rant reinforces that you probably have autism, so talking about "situational appropriateness" would be a waste of my time. Also like I said we are likely complete political allies, and this is a Japanese beginners thread, so I'm not going to respond any more on this matter.

Three things:
1. Kobo desktop program
2. Calibre
3. Obok DeDRM plugin
This is assuming you have a 楽天 account.
1. purchase the ebook.
2. open Calibre (assuming you have installed the plugin).
3. open Kobo and sign into your 楽天全員 account.
4. sync the library/download the book. Should happen automatically.
5. once book is downloaded, close Kobo (hitting the X in the window, not signing out)
6. click on the Obok DeDRM plugin icon, it should display a prompt with the book. Tell it to strip the DRM.
7. open the file path of the now DRM removed epub file, move/copy it to somewhere useful, rename if you want (the file name will be messed up, with Chinese readings for characters).
8. either use epub as is or change extension to zip, extract and use html files, what have you.

There'd be like fifty ways to interpret each word, then (especially single-syllabic ones). The language would become even harder to read, though I'm not shocked that an English speaker would be unable to recognize what makes a language hard to read LUL.
>>
>>72804620
The language is affected by the use of kanji though. Yes, if people did not change how they wrote at all, it would become harder to read by replacing kanji with kana. But realistically if kanji were removed, people would begin to favor japanese words over the more ambiguous sino compounds.

Hiragana/katakana is doable in a day.
Kanji is... more complicated.
>>
>>72803131
Kanji are just like Latin and Greek roots in English.

Knowing them:

1. Isn't hard at all
2. Is a huge shortcut when you do

There are probably people studying English who think "isomorphism" is a CRAZY word like woah how can I ever remember that, but it's totally logical and self-defining. Most kanji compounds are like that.
>>
>>72805240
depends what you mean by "understand" the words, how fast you go, and how much you focus on finishing the 6k words over reading and other learning varieties.
>>
>>72805407
Except latin and greek words don't change to have 3 forms with no reliable pattern depending on which words they are in. It's like if you took the problem of "un" and "in" (infeasible/unplayable not unfeasible/inplayable) and extended it to every other fucking word in the english language). It's like genders in other languages where it does nothing but make it more of a pain in the ass.

In Chinese you don't have that problem so they actually do make the language easier.
>>
>>72805680

Define "knowing" a kanji. To me that means knowing 1-5 words with that kanji, the readings, the stroke order and some keyword for it. If you mean just connecting a keyword to a kanji, then probably not.
On that topic, I've been doing the KanjiDamage deck for about a month and I'm at about 900 cards(2 cards per kanji) since I've done 20 and then switched to 40 new cards a day. Since at least 200 are still fresh in my mind, I'd say im a bit familiar with about 350 kanji. If you work hard i bet you can do it in 2/3 months.

Boring, slow and artificial. I don't think there's any point at which you're better off reading a graded reader than an ordinary book.

Sorry if there has a been a spergy argument repeated copiously in past threads, but what utility would practicing phonetics by itself have? I don't see why spending precious time trying to rid myself of an accent (assuming the accent is understandable, of course) couldn't be better spent reading, listening, vocab, grammar, etc. I'll try to have an open mind and watch some of those videos, though.
>>
>>72816477
If you're fine with sounding like a 外人 you don't have to worry about phonetics at all. If you want your spoken Japanese to sound as natural as possible learning phonetics is just as important an any other part of the learning process. It's all about what you your goals are, and if you don't see a use for it there may not be any use in learning phonetics for you.

What would you say is the time investment of "practicing" phonetics? Sounding native is certainly low on the list of priorities, but if something like fifteen minutes dedicated to practicing it a day would yield great results in the long run, I may not hesitate to look into it.
>>
>>72817257
Studying's not supposed to be interesting, if you lose focus stop anki and do something else for 10-20 minutes then come back to it with renewed focus. Music or basically anything else I have going on in the background reduces my retention by like 20%

What the hell?

Listening to music or whatever is not necesarily a bad idea(Some people study better with music, most people don't). Try to have a comfortable studying enviroment, whatever that means to you(How do you normally study for stuff like school or w/e? Try that)
Studying, almost by definition, should be boring. There's nothing you or we can do about that. People who actually do enjoy studying japanese do exist though.
The important thing is you don't overwork yourself or suffer from studying too much(Do not try something stupid like 100+ new cards a day)

Not really understanding the grammar of this sentence... I know she's saying something like "I can't offer you hospitality" but I have a few questions:

1. What is the point of adding 何の and how does it make sense to use this word when it's meaning is "what kind/what sort"
2. What is the meaning of も here? Why not use は or が? Is trying to say "I can't offer you hospitality either," implying that the other bear can't either or something?
3. が doesn't really have any significant meaning here, just "and..." or "but," right?
>>
>>72818249
I dont understand either, but i think (1) means something like "Whatever", and the phrase is something like "No matter what"

Something like 何も or だれも means "any kind", "anybody," etc.
When used with a negative it means "no kind," "nobody," etc.

Also it's common to end sentences with が or けど when expressing a less than optimal situation. You just trail off right there without spelling it out any further.
>>
>>72818411

But she never used 何も or 誰も, right? She used なんの and も later on, both of which I don't get in this context
>>
>>72818411
To be a bit clearer:
なんのおもてまし -> some form of hospitality
なんのおもてましも -> any form of hospitality
なんのおもてましもしません -> I can't offer you any form of hospitality
なんのおもてましもしませんが -> I can't offer you any form of hospitality, (which is a bad thing of course sorry about that but maybe I'll see what I can do etc. etc.)

I do enjoy studying. This picture was from yesterday.
I just wanted to know if people use something to stay on track. Taking breaks feels like a waste of time, even if its to eat.
At least half of those new cards are from an anime deck I just started so I went through them fast.
>>
>>72818484

Can you lead me to any resources that further explain this grammar? Thanks, but I just don't get how なんの + も later on can combine to convey the meaning of 何も

Maybe it's easy and I'm missing something, but I've never been exposed to that before
>>
>>72818456
何も would be "anything", sorry. I should have put ellipsis in my first post

It would be weird to say "anything hospitality" of course

You need の to connect the noun to 何, then も comes last, for "any kind of X"
>>
>>72818556
Wait, does "Learn:" here mean new cards?
>>
>>72818562

That seems way too weird not to have a Tae Kim lesson on or something. Any further reading on this?
>>
>>72818101
How can I read a graphic if there's no y axis?
>>
>>72818561
何の本 would be "what kind of book"
aka "biology", "history", "fiction"

you can't really say 何本

so when you want to say "whatever kind of book" or "any kind of book", that structure needs to be preserved before adding も
>>
>>72818622
There is though?
Are you looking for exact numbers representing a "sense of futility" or "accomplishment"? Cuz i don't think there are
>>72818484
Wow this is an amazing explanation, not the guy who asked but, thanks!
>>
>>72818646

Thanks a lot, I think I understand now, but can't you just put 何も at the beginning instead of everything else? If so what would be the difference between the two forms?
>>
>>72818646
What differentiates 何の from どんな?
>>
>>72818697
Well 何も is really closer to "anything/nothing" than "any kind of". Think of how these words differ in English.

But you can certainly say something like "れきしの本は、何もないよ" --> there aren't any history books
Putting it at the end of sentences is pretty safe for a beginner I think.

>>72818707
何の本 would be asking for the genre of the book
どんな本 would be asking if it's interesting, scary, etc
>>
>>72818788
I see, thanks.

Bruh. The only difference between American RPGs (or even D&D) and JRPGs is that in ARPGs the combat is single-player vs. random The Hobbit-style monsters whereas JRPGs feature fantasy creatures (usually) and feature a 3+ battle system with anime styling instead of goth/medieval.

Again, they're literally the same thing as JRPGs, the only difference is the battle system and the aesthetics.

You fight monsters, get better armor and weapons, advance the story, and then you fight the final boss. All the while the battle system is real time action instead of turn-based goodness.

Except most modern JRPGs are also real-time action (like Final Fantasy).

Disregard flag. The main difference between both, in a nutshell, is that WRPGs see narrative as just a medium for gameplay, while JRPGs see gameplay as just a medium for narrative.

So in a sense, both >>72819920 and >>72819890 are right: JRPGs are usually more linear, while WRPGs usually have a larger focus on combat and "make your character the way you want". However those are consequences of what I said above, not the reasons - non-linearity makes up for great replay value>gameplay, but it usually shits on the narrative, while having well-developed characters usually boost the narrative to the expense of customization>gameplay.
>>
>>72820155

Don't worry about getting any replies from Brazil or Russia.

You won't.

A bit worse than autism. It (yup) is unable to reason and think both on what humans say and what it does itself.

(I mean, I just called it a spic by proxy and it was unable to understand.)

The first game I played in Japanese was Dragon's Dogma, which in retrospect wasn't the best choice because frequent use of archaic (or at least courtly stiff, "medievaly") language makes it harder than it needs to be. I had already finished the game in English once before though, so not completely understanding all the Japanese didn't detract from the experience.

Next I thought I'd go more old-school, so the classic Chrono Trigger was an obvious choice. The language as such was much easier (and I was further along in my learning), but while the game was great fun, if a little easy (gameplay wise), I kind of missed having voice acting, which would've also sometimes helped in deciphering the low-res text (though that might have been caused by the emulator).

I'm currently on Toukiden 2, which looks very promising, though I'll probably stick mostly to the main story because only that has voiced dialogue.

Next up will be Tales of Rebirth (on emulated PS2) just because to get a kick out of playing something in Japanese that has no English localization.

I recommend trying some Japanese games for learning especially if you're like me and have a lot of time on your hands, but tire out quickly when reading novels. You might find that the mixture of reading and gameplay enables you to go on for hours and hours.

The Tales series is a good one. Although they're more of an ARPG style.

> but tire out quickly when reading novels

That's it exactly. It's hard to sit there and read for hours on end. Sometimes it's more fun to play around a little with some Japanese here and there in the form of menus and random dialogue with NPCs in between gameplay than to just read uninterrupted.
