i would like to be one of the people to mention that there is a lot more English descent in America then is often reported.

While Germans are very plentiful, the most common surnames in the Unites States are still English, and ill tell you why English is so under reported:
people have always seen the English as non-exotic, so when asked what heritage they are, they'd much rather hear something like Celtic Ireland than regular ol' England. Irish surnames are common, but not as much as you'd expect.
The English have, historically-speaking been our enemies rather than our friends (not that they aren't top-tier allies now).
You'll also find that once "American: was added to the census, nearly all 'Englishmen" turned into Americans. This is because English Americans have been here in the US for so long that American identity was more entrenched than English ones, whereas the Germans and Irish arrived in the 1850s, British folk have been here since before the country's founding, into the 18th Century.

I live in PA Dutch land, where English was a rarely spoken 2nd language until the 60s-70s. That culture is still very much alive today, most kids in the area have a solid appreciation of their German roots, and the area still receives quite a few German expats.

As a collective whole, sure, the US and it's culture are primarily of British influence, but even then only to a certain point. Look at NYC, Boston, and Philly. The English were there, but they bailed early and for the most part left the towns to be built up and inhabited by different ethnic groups.

We have town records to go by. More recent ones are obviously more accurate but the originally colonials kept detailed records. Y grandmother kept insisting her side was all Scottish and totally 0% but my uncle had doubts and the surname didn't make sense to me either. So he went through the family bible, where they had lived and obtained birth and marriage records.
