Irish student here (Maynooth, on Erasmus).
The winters are hard but it's not that big a deal if you've friends to spend them with. The people are introverted but friendly and will absolutely engage you if they see that you're open enough for conversation. They're terrible at small talk but that doesn't mean you can't make friends as long as you find some common topic, which should be easy enough if you're not autistic.

It's not the Finns, it's your friend. What I've noticed with a lot of Brits/Irish is that they expect to be treated a certain way and if they don't, they end up being disappointed and stick to their little pockets of expats for the remainder of their time abroad. They don't ever attempt to integrate, or learn the language, because they think English is sufficient. It's not. It's not even about their ability to perform everyday tasks without knowing Finnish, it's about people losing their patience with you when they see you're making zero effort. Many Finns speak English well but are self-conscious about it and don't want to do it when they feel they don't have to. I'm only here for a short while and I'm still making an effort to learn, and if you're here longer and clearly only see yourself as a Brit-in-Finland as opposed to a Finnish Brit, you're automatically alienating people as it eventually stops being a party trick you can use to shift foreign girls and starts othering you from the crowd.

What we need is less people using less resources more efficiently, and generally more care for potential environmental risks. This is improving but it may not be fast enough.
