Hinduism varies ALOT internally. What defines something as Hindu would probably be acceptign the Vedas (which are a large set of esoteric ancient scriptures in an ancient and difficult langauge). Many different deities and philosophical ideas are suggested in the Vedas (particularly the former) and the Upanishads (particularly the latter and the Upanisahds are another large set of texts, which act as a coherent philosophical addition to the Vedas).

From them you can garner lots of different things about the supreme deity, dualism, monism, qualified dualism, impersonal or personal god. etc etc So different hindus can have beliefs essential as different as a Christian might have from a Pagan.

For many this manifests itself as worshipping different deities, in different manners.

However this is still a bit vague and beating around the bush. A very typical Hindu world view is that there is a supreme reality which is infinite and exists prior to and beneath all sensible reality (the majority of Hindus will identify this with a particulary deity). Then there is a hierarchy of living things that are nearer or further from it, based on how well they know the supreme thing (for example devas/deities in heaven are above humans on earth, who are above animals etc etc). The object of life is to reunite with the supreme reality and against the tide of the sensible one and the guide to doing so is the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas (different hindus adhere to different ones) and so on.

I used to be indifferent towards Pakistanis. Every Pakistani I've met at conferences and events have been really cool 'modern' people who tell me that I should come visit and that it's not really so bad.
