Because the Qing leaders of Chinese wanted to stay in the past. They wanted the good'ol days back where China could just say fuck you to the world and still be the most civilized and powerful nation on earth. But the world was on China's doorstep with technologies they invented back in those "good'ol days" except perfected after years of tinkering by ambitious Europeans desperate in a 1000 year long was with Islam. When the Europe pushed the Muslims out of Iberia they were some of the hardest people the world had ever seen. They went to China and picked apart the dysfunctional Qing empire with their warrior culture forged from blood of millions of children killed by Muslims over the year, armed with superior weapons.

When they arrived the Chinese leaders were blind and told the world to fuck off. But they couldn't make them fuck off anymore so the Europeans defeated their outdated armies and technology.

Europe showed up at the doorstep of Japan as well but the Japanese were no fools, they too were a warrior culture from fighting with each other for years. They adopted the European technology enthusiastically. They really in a lot of ways threw the baby out with the bathwater and eliminated the samurai. They became as powerful as the Europeans. They too began to pick apart the Qing.

The Chinese could have done the same, but they didn't and they lost their place on top of the world.

Of course China didn't die. China took years and years but they came out of their roll under the thumb of the modern age just 20 years ago. Since then they have returned to their spot on top(only competing with a nation formed from Europeans who settled in the Americas known as the United States).
