Every year people go on the ice well into spring when the temperature's been over 0 for quite some time and sometimes get themselves killed. Also people go on the frozen lagoon next to the sea and can't find the coast on foggy nights.

Yes, most of the time they catch perch and bluegill, some go for trout and pike.

Many people have fish shantys, little cabins they drag out on the lake.

yeah, you can buy ice fishing rods in most sporting goods stores. haven't been good weather for it lately though. i have only done it once, in my childhood. it is quite boring, but i imagine it can be peaceful and calming too, with the odd few minutes of excitement.
