That is completely avoidable. He is skiing on what appears to be a glacier. You don't do that unless you have a local guide who knows where the dangerous parts are. Or you could of course not ski on glaciers at all.

Skiing is a lot easier to pick up and has a nice learning curve, where a beginner who has interest can improve greatly, and if he tries hard enough can become an expert.

I tried surfing once and could not get even close to doing it right. The only times I could even makd the thing work was like once per lesson after my intructor explained it all to me, and even that wasn't fun: it was too much of a hastle. It felt like a chore. The only people who could actually do it at all were those who put in tons of time and effort into failing before they could even become a beginner. Plus the payoff isn't even that great unless you get really good.

Skiing is great, if it weren't so damn expensive to fly out west I'd do it every year.
