It's nice there, unlike the Canterbury plains. I went up to Akaroa on a weekend when there was a big storm all over New Zealand and we had to wait on the outskirts of Banks Peninsula because of the road closing due to landslips. It's probably the hilliest sealed road I've been on. In that northern harbour there’s a comfy port town called Lyttelton, but the port’s recently been in the news a couple of times for workers getting killed in accidents.
Akaroa's in the other harbour. A Frenchman gave some Maoris a deposit to buy the land around it and most of the rest Banks Peninsula in 1838, then went home to bring back settlers, but his settler ship set off back to New Zealand in March 1840 and when they’d landed in New Zealand the Treaty of Waitangi had been signed and the Brits had declared all of New Zealand theirs. The Brits also sent a warship to Akaroa a couple of days before the French ship arrived, but the 60-80 people on the French ship were still allowed to settle there, so now all the street names and the architecture are French. If they’d been earlier it probably would have been another Quebec.
The peninsula actually existed as a volcanic island before the Canterbury plains, which are made of soft rock that fall off the peaks of the Southern Alps, reached it. The two big harbours are the craters of the erupted volcanoes.

Also, unrelated: I've met a couple people in my no name town in northern state who are from NZ. I like the accent but find it difficult to differentiate from the Australian one (probably because I speak to AU/NZ people in person)

There's a lot of tourists here doing such things. Particularly around Central Otago and the west coast of the South Island New Zealanders are outnumbered in any hostel. Tourism is second only to agriculture here.

There's a lot of public land you can camp on as well. But leave nothing. Someone will find your rubbish.

There's sites that the department of conservation manages where you can camp for maybe a 4 dollar donation (depends what facilities are there) and use the toilet, water supply, showers etc if they exist. Or some huts you can stay in with the same deal, these huts are usually a good walk from any road used by hunters ect or surfers on the coasts
