(+) Best food in the American South
(+) Best American state for hunting and fishing
(+) New Orleans in certainly up in the top 5 of culturally unique American cities.
(-) Lots of ghetto areas in almost every town/city. Hood rats everywhere. Hell, aside from the LSU campus, Baton Rouge is one giant ghetto suburb.
(-) Very flat, not much going for it in the natural beauty department w/ the exception of swamps scattered throughout.

It depends on what you value, Bruce.

Minnesota (my home state) and Wisconsin represent the best of the upper midwest. Outside of core urban areas, they have high white, high-trust societies, and are fairly cheap to live in. However they are not terribly relevant, but they are significantly less boring and undesirable than their immediate surroundings.

New England has the grab-bag of relatively old (by American standards) history, and again the all-important factors I mentioned above, plus what I believe is a slightly brighter population which benefits immensely culturally by its proximity to New York, and of course Ivy League cred. The real answer may be a Massachusetts or a Connecticut (depending on how you slice it), but don't tell them I mentioned that.

I feel New York and Texas deserve token mentions due to cultural influence and scale. Personally, I would not want to live in Texas as I detest hot weather.

I feel California does not deserve token mention, due to its plebian culture, the crap architecture (that depressing McMansion/PoMo architecture you Euros rightfully hate? It's everywhere, but it's most blatant in CA. And this is obvious since the west was built last), its long-achieved recolonization by Mexico, its sanctuary cities, and its haven for normie-beloved Facebooks and Apples that if I had my way, would go to zero tomorrow. I was personally very happy to hear that Amazon and FB took hits in the market today.

What? No. All the money is on the coasts, and the stereotypical old money New Englander is going to live in one of those towns, if not Boston (or immediate neighbor towns). The small-to-medium cities are indeed nothing to write home about, unless you really like writing about heroin and abandoned factories. But Boston is slowly but surely gentrifying outwards. Even former hellholes like Lowell are benefiting from this. This is largely due to the demographic shift where people now prefer the city over the suburbs nine times out of ten.

Any town that is not on the coast and not near Boston or some regional city (like Portsmouth) or college town (like Amherst or Hanover) is going to be some kind of mix between lower middle and middle-class working families.

Also, ALL of New England is cold and unfriendly, from Fairfield, CT to Bangor, ME and Newport, RI to St. Albans, Vt. New Englanders see pretenses to kindness beyond a very low baseline of common courtesy as phony and frivolous, i.e. hypocritical and, worst of all, a waste of time. That doesn't mean that New Englanders can't be warm or nice or friendly. It's just that it's not the default. You have to earn it.

Having lived both in NE and on the West Coast, I think it comes down to this: New Englanders will keep you at arms' length until you can prove that you're neither stupid nor useless, and with effort, you can be welcomed. At that point, you're treated like family, and people can be very loyal. West Coasters will treat you incredibly kindly and ooze openness and affection, but it's near impossible to form anything resembling an actual relationship beyond one of convenience.
