In Severnaya Zemlya is the "Golomyanniy Meteorological Station" which has apparently operated for many years. This may also be Romanized as "Golomani" or similar.

Putin has also been busy with re-activating the stronk Russian presence in the Russian Arctic, and the Laptev Sea. Nagurskoye in Franz Josef Land was refurbished recently, and they are building new bases at the New Siberian Islands, and Wrangel Island.

These places were in some cases totally abandoned following the Soviet collapse (they were broke), and are only just now being explored again in a military capacity.

There was apparently some sort of US claim on Wrangel Island at some point (and a few hard-line US patriotic blogs have mentioned it), but even if so, it has long since been abandoned in any serious sense.
