Its enough to defend the country itself from the usual dangers. Its not able to operate outside of the country but thats a good thing as nobody expects us to help anywhere that way.
The army is not really efficient with money though and wastes a lot on faulty products. Also we should concentrate more on cheaper but defensively effective systems, like AA for example, instead of offensive systems like expensive transport planes or jets. The only objective of the German army should be the protection of the German borders and the money saved could be spent elsewhere.

And I would like a Swiss like militia system. The military forces would be restricted to a minimum in peace time, a few thousand guys to operate the heavy stuff and maintain and other stuff you need specialists for, and let all the people (men and women) serve in some reserve that gets deployed when Germany is attacked.

Our military is made of competent and experienced soldiers. It is great at its missions (Mainly : Shooting terrorists and keeping order in cities).

However, it is incredibly underfunded.

Well sure, the french army is adaptable and we have many reports about how missions that initially went wrong could still be completed because the french just dealt with their problems.

But still : The army is so poor that it can't do anything alone. In Afghanistan, the french sniper teams were always deployed with american helicopters. And right now, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is in repair so our planes have to be launched from american warships.
