I tried doing this as the Byzantines, in an attempt to expand my territory while the Mongols were fucking shit. The campaign saw great sucess, I took all of Italy in 3 turns or so, but the cost of maintaining the garrisons and fleets against invaders nearly bankrupted me and I had to pull out to defend Asia minor.

3/10 would not Byzantine crusade again

Why don't you just spam a fuck load of assassins and sent them to Rome and assassinate the pope whenever he's being a cunt. After the assassins score a few successful kills, they'll be able to kill the pope at any time easily, especially right after he spawns.

The original Medieval:TW and Viking Invasion got insanely good after you had played several factions to completion, some multiple times, and let the game keeps the logs.
It was like playing against dozen of previous campaigns, which is absolutely vicious if you're an aggressive player vs AI.
But the good thing was, that the AI built a proper diplomatic intelligence, like declaring into extended wars and economical problems, and not leaving themselves completely defenseless when helping allies.
It gets absolutely brutal if you play through a .conan campaign, and the rebels start working as a united front.
