alpha is your significance level, which is (1 - confidence level) (so in your case a significance level of 0.05 because your confidence level is 0.95)

So what this means that if you have a confidence level of 95%, this is what it looks like- 95% of all the data is covered in your interval, except 2.5% on each side.

What z actually represents is relatively unimportant, but what you need to know that z is a value that depends on your confidence interval. The picture should also help with that.

Basically, to find what a z value is:

1. Determine significance level (= 1 - Conf.lev.)
2. divide confidence level by 2 (because it's a two sided test unless they tell you otherwise)

3. look up 1 - (confidence level)/2 in your table
