In the 20th century, the UK basically tarmac'ed over anything that could be covered in tarmac.
So all our highstreets, which used to be pretty places shared between horsecarts and people, are now basically big roads. Pic related.
In Europe, they have more designated town squares rather than highstreets, so they have avoided this problem somewhat, because you cannot really stick a road through a town square like you can a high street.

If you replaced all the city and town roads in the UK with cobble stones, it'd look a lot better.
