Speaking of political tragedies, I have a minor story.

Minnesota once had a liberal senator named Paul Wellstone. So beloved is Wellstone in Minnesota, that to this very day, many cars drive around the state with old "Wellstone!" bumper stickers which have been left in place.

Now, the 2002 off-year election was my first opportunity to vote. Wellstone was up for re-election that year, and since I was at college (and didn't want to vote there) I was about to do an absentee ballot. At a student center shortly before the election, Wellstone's daughter introduced herself to me, campaigning on-the-ground for her father. Not wanting to talk to her, I tipped my fedora, bade her a nice day and scurried along. A few days later, this woman and her father the senator would die in a plane crash, along with a few other people. This forced the state to hastily make new ballots for a last-minute candidate. As it happened, I decided to vote at the college neighborhood.

I still have the unused absentee ballot with Wellstone's name on it. A little piece of history.
