IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>it's like learning how to play the guitar without studying music theory.
How? Just fucking how? The "music theory" in the analogy would be the fundamentals, different media are just different tools, different instruments.

>also ctrl+z, select, color adjust, this kind of stuff makes an artist literally less capable of producing good artwork and more dependant on this stuff
I actually personally agree with this, but this is not what we were discussing. It's not the same with colouring, colouring just works differently in different media. Also, there are plenty of artists who don't see harm in learning with those tools either.

>you're not a good artist if you can only work with a specific set of tools. (specially the easier ones)
Well this is just wrong. All artists can only work with specific sets of tools, I'm sure there has never been an artist who was good at everything in art, all kinds of paints, all kinds of graphics, all styles, all surfaces etc. Even if there were, they were few, and there were lots of great artists who were really good at only one specific thing. And really, what's wrong with that? You become dependant on the tools you use, and you're not good in a medium where they aren't available, so what? Your tools aren't going anywhere, you'll always be using them.

if you have a busy day life, like a job, school and/or wife/husband/S.O./kids, you'll be lucky if you're able to draw one single hour per day. if that's your case, try to get some more drawing time in the weekend

if have few or no reponsabilities you should just be drawing all day. all. day. i'm on vacation right now, two weeks off college and my fiancée is traveling to see her folk, then i'm drawing about 4-6 hours per day

one hour per day is more than enough if you're investing in a hobbie. in the beginning you might feel that you're improving a lot, but after some time the learning curve gets lower and it takes more time. just never really stop, every day counts. if you don't have any time, try sketching in a notepad while waiting for the bus (or inside the bus) or something like that

Don't worry, you're already retarded. Whether or not you should draw from your shoulder is not determined by how good I am at drawing them, but by the instructions of the fucking exercise. Go to drawabox.com/lesson/1 and drawabox.com/faq, read what he has to say about drawing from the wrist, read the exercise, and follow the directions. Here's half a page of ellipses just for you, faggot Some of them might be messy but they're flowy, unlike yours, and that's how the ellipses are actually supposed to look. DRAW FROM YOUR FUCKING SHOULDER

Say you're drawing from A to B to C, whether curved or straight.

Loomis works for anons who were the "artsy" kids growing up, aka anons who have prior experience with art but need to take their game to the next level (i.e., not shit). Loomis basically runs with the assumption that the reader has some basic level of competency (even in Fun with a Pencil) and rapidly escalates, which is annoying for an absolute beginner (probably like you), but useful for somebody who has nice chops as is, but just needs a run through of the fundies and an introduction to anatomy.

Please only draw in a method that causes you the least discomfort.

With regards to the elbow:
There is a condition of the elbow known as Student's Elbow (Olecranon Bursitis) where the elbow can become uncomfortable and tender due to repeated rubbing on the table (which can be a type of micro trauma).

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/327951-overview has more detailed information about what actually happens

Treatment: pain killers and cushioning elbow pads.

With regards to the hand - the most common form of repeated strain injury (RSI) for artists is called Carpal Tunnel syndrome. This is because the nerve called the median nerve passes through a thing called the carpal tunnel and if the space is very narrow or you make the space pretty narrow you can get a whole bunch of unpleasant symptoms like numbness and pain. Mostly Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects the thumb and the first two fingers of your hand and half of the ring finger as well as up your palm.

Most artists can get this treated with physiotherapy or those splints you see some artists wearing.

A rarer RSI is called Guyon's Tunnel. It's because the Ulnar nerve - the other nerve in your hand that passes above the carpal tunnel but in its own special tunnel. The ulnar nerve supplies half the ring finger and some of the little finger.

If you notice any pain or tingling and shit you should stop and take a break. I don't want to scare you, but while 99% of these cases are treated by rest, recuperation, preventing you from repeatedly straining yourself, splints, etc for ALL THREE SEVERE CASES, SURGERY IS INDICATED.

hey /ic/ so I started drawing with keys to drawing and finished chapter 1. It feels like the book isnt giving me aby solid techniques other than just be observant. my friend whos in multimedia recommended loomis books. What would you guys recommend?

>>
>>3077100
I recommend stop drawing Steven Universe fan art, and draw something more creative.
>>
>>3077100
You have perfected your style, the best thing you can do is to leave /ic/ and never look back.
>>
>>3077103
what do you recommend starter books or go to guides?

my goal is to be great at realism. It's not the only art I havebut I do have a hard time drawing complex things or intricate stuff. I can still do them but it will take alot of time to do and many restatements too
>>
>>3077100

Observing objects from real life and drawing them is often considered the first step towards learning how to draw.

Finish keys to drawing, then move on to Loomis.
>>
>>3077106
I had a few restatements but it took an hour to draw. I feel at this point I can only draw simple things
>>
>>307658 I like it, reminds me of monsters from Ninja Gaiden.
>>
>>3077110
No shit everything is hard when you are a beginner
start doing figure studies for a minute each and then start trying to draw the whole body
It will take you a long time but you have to power through it or else you will be stuck drawing shit art for a shit series
>>
>>3077109
why do you recommend finishing the book first tho? it taught me to only keep drawing and refining my contours along the way and just be creative. I feel like I would do better following a specific method of drawing like how you would draw a face. I don't know what would best desu I just feel inclined to start out with something solid without having to pay another degree for it
>>
>>3077003
Please don't listen to >>3077019's advice, they are evidently trolling.
>>
>>3077115
You have only finished one chapter and you already think you know everything it teaches? I'd say keep reading and discover other helpful stuff.

Again, drawing from observation is the first step to learning how to draw, if you can't do that how do you ever expect to build up a visual library so you can eventually draw the cool shit you want to draw correctly?
>>
>>3077115
It later gets into measuring and proportion and shit, that's real fucking important. You need to learn how to draw what you see first because that's what teaches you how to study. Later on a lot of guides won't even give you step by step instructions, they'll give you something they want you to remember and say "copy it until you remember it".

If you want you can also grind Draw a Box lessons 1-2 while you're working your way through. It'll improve your line quality (which doesn't matter in Keys to Drawing but will matter in basically everything else you ever draw) and teach you some basics on perspective and construction.
>>
>>3077100
You know people will shit on you because for obvious reasons 4chan as a whole doesn't really like Steven Universe (sans /trash/ and /co/ every so often), but I wonder if the overly simplistic geometric forms are indirectly teaching kids some of the basics of construction.

Cafe drawings. Please give me crit, as I'm trying to improve vastly before September
>>
>>3077222

You're leaning the anatomy, but not the form. You have to learn how to draw lines not only to represent the anatomical shapes, but 3d forms as well. It's confusing as fuck at first. I'm personally still struggling, but understanding 3d form will help you out a lot in the long run.

Read LOOMIS' book, "drawing the head and the hands"

Read Michael Hamptons Book "figure design and invention"

Warm up with these videos every time you draw.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K-EStL9yjQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk84EpHmZKQ

This information is in the sticky, which is why people tell you to read it.
>>
>>3077252
I already read both of those books, and "drawing the head and hands" has no mention of figure anatomy, only HEAD and HANDS. How is that going to help me understand what's wrong with my torso? It's a quick sketch trying to test out the placement/shape of abs, obliques and pecs. I know I drew them wrong because I'm struggling to understand the obliques. I wanted someone who actually knows anatomy to tell me what they see.

This is why I hate posting on /beg/. Only other beginners will answer you and it's usually just them acting like they know more shit than you while not actually telling you anything useful.

it was great until i clicked on it

your values seem pretty good; draw bigger to improve the gradient on this paper. idk if the thumb's meant to be pushing skin that slants the nose, but make the creases on the nose more clear or make the lower line of the nose parallel with the lips. stop making harsh outlines. that being said, refine your edges. not every plane should have an "outline", but there should be a change in value to indicate the plane facing more/less toward the light source. Where you haven't refined the edges of the glasses, it just looks sloppy, so fix that. like on the nose, you put a line separating the bridge and the side of the nose, which just looks sloppy. Avoiding outlines will also help your eyes; they're just a mess of inaccurate, harsh lines that wouldn't be there in reality. I'll commend the construction of the two big swooping lines on the neck and jawline in the bottom right, but you don't need them.

Good work so far. My only critique is that they lack form. You have a good eye for values but they are looking flat. In value studies, part of the practice is sculpting the volume of the object with value and lighting.
>>
>>3077495
you've used like 2 values and expected it to work. the lighting doesnt even make sense (no shadow on left of lower right-side eyelid, lighter shadow on left side of neck compared to middle, weirdly dark on right side of neck, shadows follow contours that suggest that his face has the shape and texture of an egg, weirdly light around the creases of the nose, etc) Think about values relative to other values.

>anime drawing
No.

Basically every anime artist has learned the basics and can draw a realistic human being. You don't start with anime, you start with people.
>>
>>3077531
why not
>>
>>3077537
Because individuality holds some precedent in my artistic decisions
>>
>>3077532
nah that's a myth, drawing anime is fine if you only want to draw anime

So who told you that myth? Or did you learn the basics and can now draw anime?
>>
>>3077557

Jesus... ANIME we're talking about ANIME. Post your anime work. If you're going to talk shit like drawing real people before anime is myth. Post your anime work that you've done by only studying anime.

Nice bunnies though...

Tips on rendering?
>>
>>3077547
there's good individuality and there's bad individuality. Save individuality for when you have your fundies down and for when you have a better design sense. for now it's just hampering you understanding what makes x good. copying reference =/= sacrificing individuality. style comes naturally, stop forcing it.

Not bad.
How are you comfortable drawing random people in public places? I'd feel really awkward, especially after they notice that I keep staring at them.

This would be about 10x better if you fixed the face.

How the fuck do you draw from shoulder? What does that even mean? I can't make my shoulder grow an arm

The ability to utilize references is an indispensable tool in the artist's toolkit; but the ability to draw without reference is also useful; and can be done for any number of reasons: just to have fun, to further develop your own style, to facilitate drawing more freely and directly from the mind, etc.

I'm no master artist - that much is clear. But, when drawing without a reference, what steps do you take in your art process?

So far, I've boiled my process down to 5 steps:
1. Draw a 'rough' from your imagination. This will guide your hand when trying to make your line-art.
2. Draw a cleaner, line-art version of the rough that you drew in the previous step.
3. Horizontally flip the line-art so that you notice how fucked-up it looked without you even noticing. Make adjustments here and there (I use photoshop's transform tool) until it looks decent both when flipped, and when non-flipped.
4. Fill in your line-art with colors.
5. Texture and shade dat shit.

Hey guys, are there any particularly fun online teachers to learn from? Something that possibly is like an art class without the dreariness of a text book. I'm not illiterate but I've found that learning from an actual person, hearing their voice, helps things stick in my head. Ctrlpaint and drawbox can't be the only ones, right?

Often times people don't notice you. I've been drawing at the same cafe pretty regularly for the past two months and have only been noticed by a subject a few times. Anyway, most people don't say much. It helps that I live near an art school so there's a ton of other people who do similar things around town

Looking good buddy, keep it up.
>>
>>3076344
Because fundamental construction is what leads to a picture actually looking good. Eyeballing leads to polished turds.
>>
>>3076386
Yeah buddy you got to work on not symbol drawing. Draw what is actually there, not what you think should be there.
>>
>>3076393
Drawing from the shoulder does not actually matter, it's just a preference.
>>
>>3076527
Fuck off with that mentality in the /beg/ thread. Shitheads like yourself probably don't even post on /ic/
>>
>>3077028
That's because you didn't construct it bro. Gotta draw the ear that's not there if you really want it to be perfect.
