IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Best and most efficient practice plan is to start with Scott Robertson How to Draw, Move into Peter Han and then Dorian Iten. As you learn perspective, use that knowledge to analyze/draw objects everyday. Peter Han will teach you how to make said drawings communicate better, but it requires basic construction skills that Scott can teach. Dorian Iten should be the last part, even later than Figure drawing/human anatomy if you are interested in that, for which I would recommend Michael Hampton either after or before Peter Han.
>>
>>3063072
Pen and paper first is a good way to build line confidence. Starting out digitally can build some bad habits.

As for fundies, I reccomend doing perspective first, then figure, then light and color and lastly composition and design

My construction is very barebones, I draw the eyesockets, cheekbones, (these aren't prominent , so skipped ) and jaw., sometimes I leave those in a separate layer, but here I didn't The middle one is a not quite right layer that I got because I screwed the distances.
I moved the eyes up a bit, (thanks to digital) and it came out alright by my standards

Misato and Shinji anon from a few threads ago. I reworked the pose according to some suggestions, and also tilted Shinji's head forward rather than back (he's ragdolling, so I think it works better). Even though I'm referencing the Bourgeureau painting, I don't want the pose to be too identical, just evoke the scene.

I really want to nail the pose before I go anywhere else- does Shinji still feel too stiff to anyone else or just me?

I like Misato's expression more in the first one, it's more evocative of her emotional state in regards to the anime, emotionally exhausted and just done with everything. It also reminds me of the art style of Akira

that's not to say the new one is bad or less good, I just prefer her (and honestly shinji's) expression in the first

Never thought I'd redline but I had to offer some advice.

With figure drawing I always start by identifying the center curve of the spine. Everything should be curved and twisted farther away from the viewer.

I'm not super into the box method because it doesn't make for naturalistic figures but I tried doing the box thing to show how such a pose would be pushed and twisted.

It's hard to get that eye-to-hand skill, so if you did this on a sketchbook while looking at the image on a screen I don't really blame you. Good start!

critique?
>>
>>3063985
Fun fact: This is also why most people hate how they look in photographs, but like how they look in a mirror. Your reflection is by far the most common way you see yourself, so that's what your brain becomes accustomed to as your "true" appearance. But everyone's face is slightly asymmetrical, and your brain notices these differences when you see yourself in a photograph (since the image isn't mirrored), giving you a feeling that your facial features are somehow wrong or disfigured.

attempt 2, which as I said last time I would try to do the face.

one anon told me that the way to capture likeness or to make something look less symbolish was to have more realistic rendering. So I tried my best at that, but mechanical pencil combined with laziness gives you the result seen. I was more worried with the angle of the head and the face as well as the general placement of everything, but I still struggle with making things symboly or stylized.

Any tips or help are appreciated.

I'm gonna keep trying to get her right, whether it be gesture, face, or just a full drawing because muh asian girls. Expect me tomorrow.

>>

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but I remember watching this and thinking it was really helpful. Especially in the beginning how he sets up the drawing with angles etc. So yeah, you could always try putting it on in the background while practicing.

I'm trying to give myself a drawing schedule/lesson plan so I don't fucking just sit in front of a blank canvas for hours wondering what to draw.

Half hour each on fundies that I'm not crazy about doing:
Basic shapes, perspective, still life

Hour and a half spent practicing what I like:
Portraits, screenshots from TV shows, movies, or music videos.

Thats three hours every day. I turn 30 in about two and a half years. I don't want to suck by the time I'm 30.

What do you guys think?

You're missing a bright spot, occlusion area and Cast shadow.

Also, try to follow the form a little bit more with your brush strokes. And if you're just doing value studies use a tool to actually get a good circle since it's the rendering that matters and not anything else.

don't make strong lines that are supposed to be subtle. Like the lines around her mouth. This image comes off as traced because you're symbol drawing. Stop connecting lines as well. The hair is decent. treat the face in the same manner. The looseness the shapes, etc.

You've been posting these for a while now, but you never seem to take the advice given.

If you're going for outlined stylized portraits, then you're not doing too bad.

Okay, I really don't know why people think you have to "choose" anime vs realism.

First off, "choosing anime" will make you shit. Always. So fuck "focusing on anime".

Secondly, "choosing realism" doesn't mean NEVER DRAW ANIME. It means practice perspective, proportions, anatomy, etc, using realism. Because that is what anime is BASED ON. After your studies, draw anime all you want, but try applying what you've learned to it.

Also, digital has nothing to do with it. That's just the tool. Do not learn the fundamentals through a STYLE of drawing. (Anime)

Ideally you would be drawing from life and doing studies of what you're seeing. Like, say you have a plant at home. Look at it and draw it

If you really don't want to do drawings from real life, use a photograph as reference and try to copy it. But a lot of the problems that you'd have when drawing from real life are already solved for you when drawing from a photo, so it's not as effective.

Also, is any beginner material stuff welcome for review here?

You need to measure more and stop drawing symbols. Look at the mouth, nose, eyelashes: they do not look like your reference's.

Try flipping your ref upside down and drawing it like that.

>>
>>3065506
If you can't see values I think it's time to stop drawing faces and actually do value studies of simpler objects. Start with the basic shapes and work your way up from there.

Just doing the same thing over and over is useless if you don't learn anything from it.

No they're not, you just don't know what to look out for yet.

Get a book/tutorial somewhere about the basics of light and how it works. There's the Crtl paint tutorials about rendering, Light for visual artists, etc.
Just try looking around for one, everything says the same, just in a different way so it's up to you to pick what you follow.

Also, try converting your images to black and white at first, it makes it a lot easier to see values that way.

Looks like you rushed it.
With a really quick sketch I'd go for lines that I'm more confident with. Play to your strengths. With practice you can fill in the blanks later.
The important thing though, is like handwriting you have to be able to understand it.
I personally can't quite work out what's going on with the legs and feet. But if you can, that's what matters. It's your study after all.

Master studies.

Take really appealing paintings and greyscale them, look at what the people you like do with their value arrangements.

I can't really think of a good painting that has bad values, it's such an important element of making an appealing piece, so you'll have plenty to learn from studying work you admire.

You've drawn the head too flat and at the wrong angle so the perspective of the head doesn't match that of the body.
Do the head again, tilt it a bit and consider the perspective more this time.
Also you could better define some of the details like the skulls on his belt or the big teeth on the head.

>>
>>3065731

Perspective is off so you have to play closer attention to that and there are also ways to project shadows in perspective which are useful to learn. The sizes are wrong too (cone is actually much taller, cylinder is narrower) so watch out for that too. Also helps when you are starting out to draw through your shapes and construct them properly with perspective by drawing the backs of each object too. It's not good at all and pretty much all wrong but you are in the right direction because you're drawing so keep doing it
>>
>>3065754
I was more focused on the values than anything else. Is that what you meant by "no good"? Because if I fucked that up too, then I'm completely lost and don't know what to do now.
>>
>>3065748

>>3065750

Thank's a lot then instead!
>>
>>3065757

Well it takes time, you seem to be rushing it with a pencil that's too dark (the low quality scan doesn't help this). You have to slowly build up the values by making a series of overlapping lines, not by scribbling in the values. Also don't say you were only focused on values so the rest doesn't matter; it still does. One of the reasons it looks so flat is you lack an understanding of perspective. If you had that, building up values becomes easier because you understand how the object is shaped and it's shadows, as opposed to the flat drawing which you have.

Like I said though, keep doing value studies as well as looking at how better artists have done it or watching peoples techniques on youtube and you'll start to get a better feel for it
>>
>>3065758
I'm not that anon but geez if you didn't even notice the eyes were different from how you did them yourself you should get your eyes checked

i like your work a lot, the trolls can fuck off. also, though it is possible to symbol draw your way to victory itd be preferential for you to think about form while doing so. son I get you're trying to encourage but you literally posted a picture with loomis-reinforced corrections. this famalam needs loomis, regardless of if they have a nice style

it is not trolling to tell him to get some loomis in his life, it's actually more harmful to suggest neglecting those fundamentals
>>
>>3065789
are you using loomis as a substitute for skill? I know roughly how a loomis head is built, but i just symbol drew the corrections. Didnt know loomis was slang for understanding your lines of symmetry and a bit of innate knowledge.
>>
>>3065797
>i know roughly how a loomis head is built
case and point. you can symbol draw and stretch proportions for style all you want but it makes no sense to do so without the fundamental structure.

you're the one trolling him by not suggesting he practice something that gets across the fundamentals of drawing a head in perspective so well and easily, as opposed to 'understanding lines of symmetry'
>>
>>3065810
the sticky is where the real tips are stored, im just here to spread the fun way to learn to draw :)
>>
>>3065811
so you are trolling, by giving the beginners here who want to learn how to draw effectively half-assed methods that will trip them up later instead of the fundamental building blocks that would help them the most

drawing isn't just 'lines and symmetry", and telling someone that is going to cause endless hours of guesswork and frustration.

it's capturing 3D forms in a 2D space. this is why the loomis method and draw a box method are so accepted. no one is telling this guy to change his style, but to go back and practice the stuff that matters so he can perfect it.
>>
>>3065815
what im saying is symbol drawing + just thinking about form is enough to reach good gains, and makes you less likely to quit/more likely to draw more because you enjoy.

Besides, for an artist like him Im probably gonna end up helping him multiple times over months of time just due to the fact that the way he draws is conducive to redlines. My image even illustrates an example of shoulder+neck boxes.

Though it may not be the most efficient, I figure he already has the presence of mind to just read the sticky if he wants an optimal solution.

Theres no tripping up, just some plateaus which eventually are addressed by form. He doesnt even put his ear on a straight line with the eyes so that comes first, not construction imo.
>>
>>3065820
that's all well and good, my point is just it's still stuff covered in loomis and it shouldn't be that frustrating, nor should suggesting "loomis" be considered trolling.

>He doesnt even put his ear on a straight line with the eyes so that comes first, not construction imo.

Females are harder to draw than males because they have less muscle and bone structure and more areas with fat.
you can fully understand it by looking at female body builders.
most of the female body builders that still look attractive always have their facial fat

as for your drawing, well look at it.
its an extremely sharp face with no signs of fat.
also those tiny ears can only hear tiny words

Opinions?
>>
>>3067485
For my opinion, I dont like it at all.
I prefere line work over color.

For critique, first thing you need to know is that it is physically impossible to lean back without your jaw touching your neck. Push that head back.

Second, The face lacks bone structure and the eyes don't curve correctly to fit the perspective of the head.

and last, the hand on the lower bicep is too stiff, its squeezing the arm.
you need to loosen it, make it more relaxed.
>>
>>3067485
colors seem nice, but the face lacks structure and the hands are too big. also for arms and limbs try to always draw the shapes with "s" lines and put in sharp straight shapes only where the bones show otherwise you end up with drawings with no rhythm or flow
