It blends, if you're adept at illustration you shouldn't have much of a problem setting up keyframes and extremes, but the timing and the spacing is a whole different story and for that you really need the understanding of the fundamentals and anatomy

>>
what should i animate? im still learning art overall but i reckon it would be fun.
>>
>>3061999
Because you're still learning art, don't overload yourself.

At it's simplest form, animation is simply "change" or "transformation". For example, when you're sketching poses, if you get a feeling for how a pose could transform, what the next logical pose in that sequence would be, draw that pose. Do NOT draw something that has small change from the previous pose(s).

You don't need to draw them on different frames either. You can have all the drawings one next to another on one page, or even just scattered all around. At it's core that's still animating.

Good posing is the most fundamental skill of an animator. Do not worry about smoothness, do not worry about the 12 principles yet. Just draw poses that have a logical continuity.

It is a rookie mistake to draw poses that have very little change between them because it shows that the artist doesn't not understand the importance of good posing and that they are only interested in the smoothness of motion. Smoothness is pointless if the artist doesn't know where he is going with the animation. Drawing multiple poses with very little change will most often result in the artist just offsetting the outlines of the forms by a little amount, instead of thinking about how the forms themselves move in space. THINK MACRO.
>>
>>3061959
Watch a lot of stuff until you develop a feeling for that type of timing

Mainly, just animate using extremely simple shapes until you get it right and then slowly refine those shapes into characters

TVPaint is really good and I like it. It took me a while to learn the interface since I'm used to using Flash. I also recommend Flash but I have bias towards it since I've been using it for three years now.

After Effects is great too. It's not for hand drawn animation but it's good for motion graphics and post-production.

Study video on how flesh seems to bounce alongside the body.
An easy way to explain it is imagining there's a string that attaches 'loose' objects to a solid base, such as breasts/hair. Of course they're not strings, it's solid planes of flesh/playdough/polygons/whatever-the-fuck, but this can give you an understanding of how to apply it in 3D space.
The solid base is going to do a movement, and in order to animate the loose objects attached to it properly, you'd have to keep in mind the idea of inertia and according to physics and common sense, an object in motion will stay in motion, and an object at rest will stay at rest.
Applying this to tittorinos and hair strands, they're obviously attached to the body very strictly, so imagine this string having tension, causing the object to follow behind the base.
eugh I can explain it better visually.

Anyways that's how bouncing stuff seems to work

But also, I tried looking at it on 15 fps and the entire cycle looks a lot better
>pic related

I'm not sure how I could have made the sword seem heavier other than the tip sliding on the ground and bouncing up just a little, any tips?
>>
>>3066059
the tip of the sword should point more to the ground and shake less. Also the sword need to have more gravity, it go up and down at the same speed that doesn't feel right like it was made of rubber.
The helm is also a little stiff and shoulder need to move from front to back to add width.
And work more on the shadow.

>>
>>3069233
you try using a different eraser? or select the drawing then press the 'delete' key

>>3069471
The thing about toonboom is that when select a stroke it doesn't limit it to your selection but selects the entire stroke which can kind of be a pain in the ass but is also really good for certain things. Basically it means I can't ever truly "delete" things precise enough for this autistic brush engine using the eraser, though.
>>
>>3070678
Well I guess I can, but I can't use the "soft" eraser to do it basically, because I'll inevitably discover even if the stroke is made completely invisible it's still "there".

What's the Best program for making animation in the style of japanese studios like ghibli, kyoani etc?

>>
>>3075400
That's because they have a team of people doing specific task in their animation assembly lines. As one person, you don't need software with such bloated functionality. Any drawing program is suitable for frame by frame animation as long as it has a basic animation timeline and layers. If you get even more serious about animation, you may need a text editor or spreadsheet program to make x sheets (timing sheets) so you can plan out your timing more easily.

I havent watched the show so maybe this is just the show's style but it looks weird to me how every movement is very pose to pose and every transition between pose has exactly the same slow in and out to it. comes off as very robotic imo

people in my life are pushing me to get into animation so i can get a studio job, not to be a faggot or anything. but how do you people find animation creatively motivating? like your just drawing the same thing over and over again with slight variation. is it the end result or the process that you enjoy? is it an enjoyment acquired? how the fuck do i trick my brain into liking to animate?
>>
>>3077810
>like your just drawing the same thing over and over again with slight variation.
You're approaching animation wrong, or you lack the ability to understand nuance, if you think there's only "slight variation" between the poses when animating. Yes, sure, eventually there will be slight variation frame-to-frame when you're done with the scene, but when you start off with the scene, the variation in poses is massive.

Looks nice. The difficult hand is done nicely but watch out that you don't lose the form on those fingertips towards the end of twist.

The door opening is a bit too evenly spaced I think. I'd ease out more.

Also more personality would be achieved by not moving her through the door frame all at once. First the arm then the head and so on. Of course how she enters depends on the context of the scene, but to me, the amount of time spend on looking at the hand opening the door should mean that she wouldn't just barge out completely.

Of course what I'm suggesting would require redrawing a lot of frames, but just something to consider.

photoshop CC's timeline is not the best but it's not terrible either because I can use all my good brushes. the onion skinning is a little glitchy too but it works for me
>>
>>3078485
I first started out using video layers, but I've come to realize it's better to use image layers and make them a second long. That way I can rearrange them.
A friend of mine encountered a problem a while ago where every so often she would draw on one frame but at the same time would draw on another frame down the video layer. Turns out Photoshop does not like 9 frames per second because that was the only time it would do that.

Yeah the lines are equalized in render, it's just work mode they are that size (since when you scale stuff up and down the line gets bigger/smaller, and then you use line_width controllers for render to be equal).

Ex:
>>
>>3079052
>Yeah, but it's such a time savings so you gotta consider.
good things take time, anon

I'll say this, it definitely looks like something from the show and it's great that you're able to make something that looks like it's on the show by yourself, but it's kinda sad that so much money goes into a show that could be so easily made by 1 person. it's kinda like family guy
>>
>>3079060
Not really actually. The rigs take a lot of time to build and there's lots of things to consider. Furthermore look at the background character count and designs they have and you can see how quickly they scale up (I'm working with two characters for this 3:30 long short, and it's taking me about 3 weeks to do, and I also need to do the other characters for BG which i'll single side rig).

I think that's because there is a mix of breaking the 180° rule and a jump cut. She turns so far around that the camera starts to go from her right side to the left (but cuts before the full turnaround happens) and then the next shot puts us clearly on her right side.

Also in the first shot her arm is down but then in shot 2 it is out to grab the door knob, so it is a little jarring but easily fixable (maybe just accentuate the elbow)

So if you want to create an "anime" or rather a detailed animation like you'd see in something like the Monogatari series without all the fancy effects, which of the three would be best?

Adobe Flash or TVPaint or OpenToonz?

The programs you listed are all used professionally in the anime industry, so really it all depends on your own personal preference. The thing you're going for depends solely on your own skill as an animator if you want to do something like Monogatari.

OpenToonz is a fucking mess and not recommended for someone just starting out, but TVPaint has more "natural" feeling brushes if that's something you're into.

Hey everyone! I was commissioned to storyboard the pilot of a cartoon series a client was pitching to Nickelodeon.

Unfortunately his connection at Nickelodeon never got back so it's assumed it won't get greenlit. They still want to find another studio that will take their pitch bible, but since it hasn't been greenlit, the client said I can post my storyboards in my portfolio.

However, since they still want to try and pitch this cartoon to a studio, should I post all the storyboards I did in my portfolio, or just maybe the first 3rd of the episode? Just in case it does get picked up, I don't want anyone stealing the idea or maybe spoil the whole episode to the public.

Also, should I post this on social media, like Twitter or Instagram or Facebook? Or would you keep it on the downlow and just display them in your portfolio?

The name of the series and the creators names are on the boards too. Should I remove them If I'm to display them in my portfolio?
>>
>>3084608
Also, I ask about posting on social media for networking purposes and to gain more storyboarding opportunities. These are the only storyboards I've ever done, but I am thinking of pursuing a career in it.

Much better. Like what the other anon said, you should slow in/out more on the arms. The other thing is if you don`t know how to in between with out of pegs or shift and trace, check out this link http://listeningside.net/a_side06.html
You should clean up your keys, clean up the passing position, and then do the rest of the linework straight to cleanup with this method. It will be much more accurate, particularly on these kind of shots where the form of the hand doesn`t change much, and will save you a ton of time.
Remember to check your forms for inconsistency once you get past the cleanup for those 3 frames, and then you are basically home free (at least for a generic anime walk).

Pose your rig's keys well, and don't rely on tweens.

In this short thing, I used the exact same key poses. The only thing different is the movement done inbetween. Easing can be used to make tweens look more natural, but don't rely too much on the laziness of tweening from key to key. Try doing the same ease-in and ease-out that a tween would do by hand.
Try not to animate on ones too much either. The animation can look cluttered and janky. Animating on ones can also be a huge waste of time depending on the work you're doing. Animating cycles for a vidya jame is very different than animating a couple characters having a conversation. I recommend animating on twos and then animate on ones if you need to animate a faster movement, such as a character talking really fast.

Roughs are harder to critique, it requires that the critic has the foresight to understand what the goal of the animation is and what in the roughs needs to be fixed in order to reach that goal.

In your case my crit would be that the leap is too long and too high. It feels like you're using it as a crutch to make the motion easier to execute. Making things easier isn't bad in principle but in this case its to the detriment of the motion.

Of course stylistic choices could allow a leap like that but I personally am not getting that feeling from the motion.

Thanks for the feedback, anon
I usually like my jumps/bounces a little floaty, but I see what you mean. I didn't convey it well.
How should I do the contact better?

Looks nice. The right arm seems to jump a little right as the mace swings around it, specifically the elbow. Or that could just be me.

it does, i agree

Keep the leg straightened for the contact, but already twist the ankle at the contact.

I wasn't trying to say what I drew is a bad pose but rather that it's a bad contact point for the character since the ankle is twisted

The even spacing is a bit boring. Ease in to the overhead pose slower by holding some of the drawings longer. the forward step with the swing doesn't add really anything to the motion so redoing the overhead pose with a bit more lean back would give the step forward more oomph as well.

i filmed my self doing this motion for ref and trying it again seems to not anything either and is just unnecessary.

I agree the highest pose could use another frame

I don't understand

Probably better to ask your client before seeking advice here about it. At the very least you should put "storyboarding experience" on your resume and if anyone is interested you can tell/show them more in private.
>>
>>3088225
i meant to say not add anything. like an exaggerated lean back looks unnecessary

It's not unnecessary if it helps to sell the movement better. The reason why I recommend it is because the step forward, as it is, is pointless because it brings no power to the motion. The point of stepping forward when swinging or doing whatever action is to receive the forward momentum of the torso. As it stands, there is no tangible momentum in the creatures movement. A step in a swing or a slam is to allow the body to gain momentum which is then transferred into the swing. All large powerful arm movements start from the legs or the torso and then explode through the body into the arms. That is why I recommended a lean back, as it would allow the beast to bring its whole body down with the swing.

Of course it doesn't have to be as exaggerated. You may for example twist the torso for rotation power. If the beast was fighting an target much smaller and weaker than it, less exaggerated movements can be sold through the reaction of the recipient of the swing.

Either way the problem with the motion is that it lacks impact, and I think these kind of things would help bring in more of that.

Here's a breakdown of reinhardts ultimate which for gameplay purposes is extremely fast but still contains all the same principles.
