TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.
OLD THREAD: >>3050700
This for all beginner art or just ones of people?
>>3053656
Is about all beginner art this threda
I bought some fluorescent paint and a few brushes to try making some blacklight art. I've never painted before, and I'm bad at drawing too, so I just wanted to stick to simple designs for fun. There's nothing in the sticky about painting though. I don't even know how to do brush strokes properly. Are there any YouTube channels or a book for beginning painting?
Reposting since last thread ended before a reply.
First time ever drawing or colouring a locomotive digitally....how bad is my first try?

I used to draw a lot. Wasn't that great but I was starting to get proportions right.
How can I make the most of my time on that boat e.g. exercises, poses, thing I could draw while traversing the fucking ocean.

>>3053776
What is there to critique,
For people to critque objects you're gonna have to draw the whole thing because perspective is the main thing to focus on.
Anyone have any specific tips on how to learn to draw heads?
>>3053897
i like it. like the others have said i think you could have spent a bit more time on the drawing, mainly the eyes. also i think it might help to darken up the shadow side a bit and add in some more saturated colors, like in her hair. things look kind of muddy right now.
i'm a beg too though, so maybe not an accurate critique
>>3053780
all you did was flat colors, there are no values/light and shadow
I painted a flower. It's not very good, a child could do better, but I like how it came out.
Guy who drew the meme face used in the last /beg/ op image, multiple anons told me I should study the planes of the face, so I looked around and decided to try the Reilly Method.
As a first try I wanna know how did it go and should I fix anything before I grind through 1000 of these?
Or even should I look for another way to go about facial and head planes?
As always crit appreciated and sorry for image quality.
>>3054036
Immediately see that the philtrum isn't properly centered but small placement errors like that should be fixed with more practice.

>>3054040
It's bad but I like it, sorry. It's my first day trying to paint, everything else I did came out even worse.
please dont be too harsh >.<
Comments and suggestions?
>>3054036
i'm not the right person to ask, but that looks like more work than is necessary. does it work for every face? also think the side plane should start at the eyebrow and curve down to the corner of the eye. you can feel the bone with your hand.
>>3054064

>>3054063
I mean. I dunno if troll or serious but I'll take bait regardless and say it could have been a lot worse. HOWEVER it could be leagues better. Try again actually using the ref this time.
>>3054063
Try not using such a disgusting reference for starters
>>3054070
yeah the point of it is to use as a guide, like hopefully I'll get good enough with it and understand it well enough that I don't actually physically have to draw the lines to know the planes of the face underneath. And surprisingly it isn't that complicated to begin with. I followed the steps of
this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RmHOvmPJjE
and for the side plane he has it go from the corner of the eye curving outwards towards the hairline, but I think I have room to move it up like you said. Also it work's as a general guide for most faces as he shows in some of his videos where he goes over a ref. picture
he mentions that "you don't want to impose the method onto the figure, but find where the method is similar to the figure."
either way thanks for the feedback.

Posting for an initial opinion. I've been drawing for about a year and I'm starting to hit a wall in improvement. I don't really have a stylistic goal I am working towards, I just want to make good monsters.
I have a few pieces of practice/gesture I can post as well but this is a fairly recent(a month old or so) example of something I've done(really a bunch of sketches but it gets my lack of skill across).
>>3053776
Thats a really cool mech anon, but I had to look at it a while to realize that is what it was.
There are a lot of cool details and shape design in there and your forms are pretty good. The image was still tough to read though because the detail just over whelms every thing and the pretty well thought out larger forms are lost.
I covered up your details and worked on the read of the thumbnail with sharply contrasting value to help pick up the speed of the initial read.

some spooky monsters man, but I would do a fast under drawing of the shapes and a quick lay in of the features to feel out your monster. Take more time to think between strokes and why you are making that mark. Having a consistent thought out line or two will really help you.
Here is a quick example I drew up for you of starting light with big shapes and a quick lay in before making lines final. It's a pretty unimpressive example but I think you can see what I was trying to show you.
>>3054172
I definitely see what you mean. Line control is definitely something I need to work on(i have bad habits I need to rectify) as well as deciding which shapes create forms in specific areas. Your example is better than anything I could do at the moment and I'm glad you took the time to make a visual, it's very helpful!
Thanks for the quick response, it's much appreciated. I'll keep line control and constriction in mind as I work on my own stuff as well as the st/ic/ky.

it takes so long to plot out each increment of every detail
is the idea to just get good enough that you can eyeball them well?
is the idea that you always do it every time?
is the idea that you measure the increments until you are good and can then do it freehand?
>>3054980
>is the idea to just get good enough that you can eyeball them well?
Kinda, but you will still sometimes get something wrong, or have to measure it, no matter how good you are.
>>3054974
Also doing that exercise. No advice for you though; I keep "overlapping" cubes because I'm bad at measuring the depth
>>3054974
Yep.
Measure it out. Use a rule the first time around, it will help. Set vanishing points (again, only the first time around, then do it all freehand).
Is this any good ? Drawing without references for 3 months
>>3054991
I did one of those a few days ago and honestly, the hardest part was how long it took, I also find that I made the gap between the blocks a bit too small but I couldn't be arsed to change that halfway through.

I'm about to subscribe to New Masters Academy, but their videos are barely structured and even then I wouldn't know how to make all of that into a complete day.
Do any of you follow any particular schedule for a beginner? Like 2 hours of figure drawing, 2 hours of x and so on? Thanks.

>>3055320
Any reason why you draw the pelvis like that or have the legs detach that way?
It seems like you're trying to invent your own kind of construction, but it doesn't really make sense. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. You can just follow any construction method as close as possible, either Proko, Hampton, or Huston, pick one and copy it as closely as you can and stick to it.
I think also you may be jumping ahead into figure drawing. You should first hone your general drawing skills, meaning that you should learn how to draw and render what you see as it is. I'm not sure you're past symbol drawing yet and attempting figure drawing at this point may just slow you down.
I suggest going with the essentials first. Test your drawing skill with drawing objects from life or doing the starter books like Drawing from the right side, or Keys to Drawing. Also check out Draw a Box.
If you've done that already, you should post here so people can give you feedback. Generally attempting figure drawing or construction should only be done when you have proficient drawing skills. Basic drawing is applied to figure drawing. You do not learn how to basic draw with figure drawing first, unfortunately.
>>3053646
Idk /ic/
I feel like his torso is too long
>>3055356
I'm not an expert but you should be able to tell from the negative space in the right arm that it's pretty off there
>>3055356
I think the most glaring issue is that his head is too small. I'd advise you to practice gesture, it will help eliminate stiffness and you can make sure your proportions are right before you start on anatomy. Measuring proportion is easier if you use heads... for example, the figure is approximately 8 heads tall and 2 heads wide, on average.
>>3055362
>>3055377
ah, I see, thanks. I briefly did some stuff with gesture, with Proko, watching some Vilpu and a book by Hampton, but an anon told me Hampton and proko weren't good sources. Is this true?
I also remember there being a website where it would give you so long to draw a gesture, what was it?
Hey guys, I think I'm calling this done from a few threads back, and getting started on a new study.
>>3055392
I did a study of the Stannis scene from GOT Battle of the bastards. I'm trying to wrap my head around color, and thought this was a simple way to start.
>>3055387
Art education resources are largely dependent on the artist learning, everyone is different. Proko is a largely observational artist, but his videos are good for people who hate reading. Hampton was incredibly helpful for me (and free online) because he deconstructs anatomy into simple shapes that are easy to replicate and study. I'd just try a bit of everything until you find something that clicks with you.
Some gesture drawing websites are quickposes and line of action, there are a bunch of different ones though.
>>3055400
so its all subjective?
>>3055408
not entirely, there's a fair amount of misinformation out there but if you're looking to learn construction of the human figure, then the same names come up; hampton, hogarth, vilppu, bridgeman, and (unironically) loomis. People here will argue which one is better but I think its subjective in that way, yeah.

Krita is the best by far. Imho when it comes to painting it's on par with photoshop. It has tons of features, nice UI and even animation tools (they're basic but that's by design and they're really really solid). Runs smooth as butter ever since 3.0 and it's super stable (at least on linux, i haven't tried it on windows).
The biggest downside is that there's not as many brushes available online as for photoshop, but the ones that are out there are very nice and making your our own is not hard.
Mypaint is also good but it's not meant for finished works, it's good for practice and quick sketches/paintings or thumbnailing. It has way less tools (on purpose) but it's also way less resource heavy, fast and will run on toasters.
After months of getting shit on by anon, I've finally decided to create a DA account. Holy moly, I've been getting so many ass pats for my art. It feels good to know people actually like my poorly done drawings.

I'm not too sure how to start with the head so I figured while I brainstormed, you guys can let me know whats wrong with what's already there. Criticism would be greatly appreciated.
>>3055756
The problem is that theres no head.
Sketch the total first, work at everything at once.
Practice gesture to get better at that stuff.

First time posting, reference is a drag queen. so that explains the big fuckoff eyelashes and high eyebrows but still, feel free to be tough with critique

I actually kinda of like it! In a sort of color blocking kinda of way and I do like the way you painted the reflections on the left side windows. Keep at it with form and improving :)
Also eff mine's sideways :(
Started going through the fundamentals.
Right now trying to understand 3D forms and how stuff moves around them.
Anything I should focus on more?

I don't think the pelvis needs to necessarily drawn as a bone, since the shape of our bones can be very complex. I see a circle or a cylinder used often

Per aspera ad astra. 3,500 isn't bad at all for the first year.

i know but i like drawing pelvis like that, and first time drew legs and hands not as a cylinder and idk if i should still draw cylinders or this is fine

Yah. Here:
I like where you're heading with your color study. A good rule of thumb is the 80/20 rule--in your case, 80% cool colors, 20% warm (this applies vice-versa, too). I think I'd like to see the warmth pumped up a bit in the orange on the horizon? Like, from it's source. Composition-wise, you've got Stannis placed solidly, but I feel like you need more in regards to your fore-middle-and background. Yeah, you've kind of got it established, but let's be real, you can definitely add more suggestion to the foreground. Maybe add more of the bush/twigs that you've already put in? I'd also like to see some rim lighting, but that might just be me.
>>3054974
>supposed to do this, my lines are so fucked up. Is anyone else going through the drawabox perspective exercises right now?
the fact that it wasn't so hard makes me think I'm doing the exercise wrong... am I?
also, are there more difficult ones?

Yeah, it's supposed to be spherical, you're drawing them around a cube which is easier.

Did you make the textures from nature? I think you should study them more, they don't look lifelike, and they look flat.

I actually really liked the superhero vibe and the proportions on this one so I used it as skeleton and followed your lines. As you can see it's a great body for a superhero comic, but if you tried to make a normal guy you should somewhat reduce the hip to shoulder and ribcage ratio, some length of the arms and the thickness of the legs. you got the pose super well though.
was fun to do. keep going dude.

It's because you keep drawing boxes instead of what you want to draw

>>3056329
What's funny? Aren't you going to post evidence for the blatant superiority of the box approach?
>>3056306
That animal painting you did is pretty good. Animals are easier than people. Especially animals you don't see everyday. Since we rarely see it our brain doesn't symbolize it.
So my suggestion is to study people. Do one of those asaro head. And always think about planes and form in painting. It's very important.
Is it possible to create accurate likenesses without measuring with pencil and just utilizing your eyes?
>>3056148
You have the angle of the head and the structure but her eyes are still symbol drawn and way too large.
>>3056339
>blatant superiority of the box approach?
Not gonna argue with you anon. Keep doing what you're doing.
How to fix a shaky hand?

what is a tip for drawing birds? they always turn out messy for me.
>>3056380
I'm no expert, but birds are usually composed of very basic shapes covered in a much more complex texture. Try to focus on the basic shapes first before you start on the texture. If you're struggling with the texture, try studying individual feathers.
>>3053643
Please help me. Cross hatching is hard.
How do I get more likes/favs/ass pats on deviantart? I just joined and I uploaded a bunch of stuff, but everything just got one or two likes. I see much worse artists with many likes, how do they do it?
how to draw mouth
how to draw hair
how to fix collar?
>>3056438
Forehead is too small.
>>3055610
so here's the second attempt. Not much better in my opinion, but I'll just keep trying.
>head not balanced on neck
>facial features look glued on and are too far to the viewer's left
Normally the full head is meant more so with the intention of getting the angle and shape down and having the proper placement of the face based off the ref, but it's hit or miss with that. I tried to fix this off to the side by redoing what was bugging me
One last thing, I have trouble capturing likeness. For example the drawing makes her look either like an older woman or a guy with long hair. Any tips on that or should it just come with practice and actually getting everything in the proper place and angle?
thanks for critique and feedback
give me strength, /ic/
>>3056489
It looks like you're getting the construction and perspective but your measurement is off on various parts.
Also, you are symbol drawing or drawing the face stylized. If you want to capture likeness, you'll want to go for a realistic rendering.
So take the eyes for example, your version is a vague shape that resembles the reference but you did not copy it exactly as it looks. The same applies to the mouth.
The shading is also stylized and not accurate. The light is from the right side so the entire left side of the face is in shadow save for a few areas of light.
All of these different things add up to create likeness.
>>3056474
You're doing well. Just continue with the mouth the same way you drew everything else. Simplify it down to lines and a basic shape. Then fill in the values.
>>3056542
By the measurement being off I assume you mean things like distances between parts of the head and face?
I'll work on rendering a bit, but I'm gonna try not to stray too far into it until I make less mistakes with symbol drawing and inaccuracies.
Thanks anon
>>3054123
I know my picture quality is shit but can I get some critique pls? ;-;
>>3056576
Not horrible, but don't just draw cylinders and circles for people. Try to draw the forms and what you see. Try quick poses like 30 seconds.
>>3056576
I like the motions of the gesture. I think you're getting the idea down. You should try now to use rhythmic lines like in the pic. The lines should flow together to make the motion of the gesture more cohesive.
Your gestures also need a sense of weight and balance. Try adding the ribcage and pelvis to structure the pose. Then learn about the weight distribution of the figure. Keep track of the alignment of the shoulders and pelvis. They usually counter balance each other. Always remember to plant the feet.

Thanks for the advice. I tried a set of 2 minute gesture drawings from a reference pack and then afterwards used line of action, also did 2 from imagination as a warm up. I know one is bad but I feel like a few are okay, please destroy any pride I may have in them.
>>3054189
All your textures look the same. Eyes look weird. Looks like it could be slimey but I don't think that's what you wanted. I don't really know what I'm looking at so I can't be specific.
>>3054236
Awkward anatomy stands out and hinders the poses. Your lines are very scratchy so they don't read well until I enlarge the image. I'm not familiar with hampton but your gestures seem very anatomy focused without really apturing any of the energy.
>>3054310
>>3054318
What kind of response do you want anon? Seems like these are just doodles. Some of your lines are very nice though. The line weight on the woman's back in image 2 is weird.
>>3055157
Maybe try changing the legs so that the far one is in more of a supporting position. It looks like he's running the the direction his chest is, but I think it should be that he's puching toward the screen yes? So he should be turning.
>>3056438
Slow down on your hatching a bit. You're getting hooks from turning to draw the nest one before lifting your pen.
>>3056540
Keep going anon, you can do it. Although I'm not sure what your drawing is.
>>3056238

Focusing on the fundamentals first is the best way to go. He's not going to be drawing boxes forever. Meanwhile, you're just gonna continue drawing animu without knowing any fundamentals and stagnate.
>>3055920
>seriously considering doing gay/furry porn commissions
I'd avoid falling into that trap.
Hey guys, is a comic a decent idea for practice? I don't intend on posting or getting recognition for it but I figured drawing the same characters over and over again in different poses and sizes would be alright for practice. What do you think? Should I stick to something more traditional or should this method work?
>>3055963
broadening your tonal range could help give it that pop, and try using more than one tool to help get you some more detail.
That stem should curve just a bit. Nothing in nature is completely straight.
accuracy is there, highlights are nice.
