Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Nicnac, Nicnac had a rough life...

I've been thinking, and I wanted to let you guys know about this. This next year I will 100% be making a website intended to be Last Artist Standing, as it is going to be my directed study for an entirely project based class. As to making a complete, submission based site, I see it as unrealistic and others have as well. to compromise and give you guys a usable, applicable site I will only be giving it the ability for ANY user to make a challenge and other users to join in and provide links to completed submissions (not necessarily provide thumbnails right away for submissions to challenges). A select group of users will be given administering rights to monitor and delete challenges as they see fit so trolls don't worry, I have you covered. Rather then reinventing the (flaming) vehicle that LAS is now, I believe that making improvements or fixes to where it lacks will be the best route for myself for now. I want this lassos. I want this. I cannot promise you a full feature site, but I can promise you at least this. Im sorry

All that matters is the present moment when you are drawing.

If you catch your mind wandering and thinking about the future or making self judgements about your markmaking, just take slow deep breaths and pay attention to your surroundings until you can focus again.

I think meditation intimidates some people, at least from my experience of recommending it, because of strong associations with hippy toolbags or strange eastern religions. Plus there's the notion of "what good can sitting around for a bit doing nothing actually do? I got so much shit I could be doing instead, sounds like a waste of time."

But after doing it daily for a couple years now, it really is amazing for improving overall mood, reducing stress, reducing fear, improving focus and attention, and a whole range of other benefits for less time out of your day than most other things you're probably doing regularly.

I mean, my art is still objectively shit so it doesn't magically make you amazing or anything. But at least you don't fall for the self-pity and depression meme that so many people use as an excuse to talk themselves out of trying.

more CBT focused. I'm recovering/recovered from a lot of anxiety issues and its mostly been about training myself to catch myself before i spiral out.


Two major things were helpful for me as well.

1. Regular exercise, I found when I'm in a shit mood after a bad painting session and I go run/cycle its often complete mood reset, and my whole day isn't ruined just because drawing didn't go as planned.

Lassies, how do you get your ass to practice more?

It was really painful for me to even start to draw every day, so i wonder how i am going to survive from the next logical step. I can probably manage okay with grinding while i am having a vacation, but i don't know how the fuck can i manage when it ends.

Schedule, decide what you want to practice, give yourself specific assignments. Give yourself more assignments when you have more time and whittle it down to a smaller number when you have less time.

On a long day maybe something like ten 15minute drawings, and on a short day you can drop it down to 2-5minute drawings.

Adding onto this- make it fun.
Enjoying what you do is the #1 priority because everything else will come far more effortlessly at that point.

Make a list of things you enjoy more than drawing/painting.
Now take that list and decide if you would feel your time was well spent doing each activity.
The things you view as ultimately unproductive/a waste of time etc. learn to limit them or abstain from them.
I find things like MMORPGs and netflix to be easier entertainment than painting, so I had to severely limit my time or quit them altogether.

Also, don't make everything about studying fundamentals directly from a book, especially if it kills your drive. I personally find drawing from life to be fun, and photo/master studies to be boring. Even if one way of learning is 20% less efficient than the other, ultimately you'll get better doing the one that makes you want to drop the hours in. Balance studies/observational work out with doodling, creative projects etc.

If sitting inside your house doesn't do it then get the fuck outside and go to a coffee shop, or bring paint to a park. Or go work out, do chores, and then try again when those are done.

Keep a sketchbook in your bag, car, bed, familyroom etc. Everywhere you frequent in your house keep one close by.

I don't have a distinct style yet, but i don't think that is a question you should be thinking about. Many people have this weird idea in their head that you just pull your style out of your ass or something. But actually, your style is a result of many different influences you come across in your life. Of course you just can't endlessly copy something. You need to have a some sort of base which you build your influences on. So study fundamentals, basic construction etc and slowly start adding elements you find pleasing.

Construction (understanding how to simplify the body in a way that lets you draw it in 3D)
Perspective (required for all forms of drawing)
Anatomy (so you actually know what the Bumps on the body are)
Gesture (the fluid motion of a pose)

Gestures are just capturing the action or feel of the pose. This is where people exaggerate a pose to add interest

hey, i visit the threads (mostly just to ctrl+f my name) but if you want to ask me a question you're better off just asking directly in the discord or on tumblr. also i'm far from being good at drawing figures from imagination, naf is leagues beyond my level in that field. but what i've found best for getting better at it is drawing a lot from imagination and studying what you're not good at, and setting your standards as high as possible. also, try to stay as realistic as possible, even if in the end you want to do stylized art, because stylization is just simplified realism, and you can't master one without the other.

regarding studying, i went through a ton of books, understanding anatomy is crucial to being able to draw the human figure. i particularly recommend vilppu's anatomy (video) series and scott eaton's as well. and yeah, get as much life drawing and photo studies done as possible, but always keep in mind you're trying to learn something from them, and apply that in your own work afterwards (no random studies).

I looked through some other artist progress and reassured myself that everyone was once where I'm at. Then I just tried to calm myself by meditating for a bit. After that I walked away from my computer with just my sketchbook and some music, basically isolated myself from everything else, calmed myself with classical music and focused only on drawing. Ended up drawing for a few hours and didn't even notice.

You should try something similar, turn off all the anime/tv/movies or whatever other distraction you have, clear your head, turn on some relaxing music, look at work or art progress that inspires you and then focus only on drawing no matter the result. Hope you get through this anon.

I have a feeling that challenges are more succesful when they are shorter and require less quantity of drawing.
The RPG challenge for example started well but everyone got burned out on it after a week, I certainly didn't make it.

You could maybe trim it down to a week and give us a theme or subject and leave it at a single page or 4koma to get some weebs interested.
That's what I think would work better, at this point it seems that most lassies can't handle very demanding challenges, since there is no reward there is not much reason to put in a little extra effort.

Natural light my man. I take photos of my drawing on my balcony and I get really good photos, even with a shitty cell phone camera.

If you don't have a balcony, try to use your window or go outside to take the photo.

So, I bought a graphic tablet (NEW 1060 PLUS) but I'll admit it I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed since this is all new to me, I've never drawn anything digital before, I was strictly drawing traditional before. I downloaded a bunch of programs to see whether everything was working as intended or not. I think I'll try to get good with Clip Studio Paint I think as I read good things about it.

Anyway, does anyone have any tips or advice? Like some sort of course, stuff I could read or whatever I could follow to reach a point where I more or less know what I'm doing? I don't mean drawing-wise but more like tool-wise. I'd just really like some tips, guidelines and advice if possible. Cheers.

Even light, not too bright, just experiment a bit.
Oh and if you take a picture with a smartphone, you could use camscanner which automatically scales and adjust the pic to the dimensions of your paper so it fills out neatly and corrects distortion when your paper is at an angle, it makes everything look slightly more appealing.

Though it will never look exactly the same, you shouldn't expect that.
Even scanning in your drawings will make the colors look totally different.

Sketch the whole thing, be patient, methodic and use a ruler.
