There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

The picture was an eyes study, but I feel like I did this exercise better the last time I went (partially) through keys to drawing. My observation really's gone to shit since then.

I really struggle with getting the angles and proportions just right. I see that they're wrong, I can vaguely tell how they're wrong, but when I put my pencil down on paper to make the angles and lines they always wind up fucked. The shading (drawing shapes of shadow) helps cover this up to some degree, but I really struggle on linework. I do a page of Draw a Box line practice as warmup every day but it feels like there's something obvious that I'm missing.

I still think some photo refs from human models will help, thats a good ref but you need to look at a flesh and blood human to get some posing and flexing

Ignore >>3032671, he memes this crap in all these threads.

Your image is way too fucking big and way too fucking dark to make out the finer bits, and what can be made out is a lotta bullcrap. Your eyes are anime stylized but the rest of the face is trying to be realistic (it's not), your ears are literally just lemons, and the whole thing seems very unfocused. For gods sake read the fucking sticky.

The hair does take up actual volume to some degree though.
>>
>>3032641
Just on a basic level I think you should take a(nother?) look at Drawabox.com (or ArtFundamentals if you browse Leddit). Your lines are rough as shit, and if you get better at your lines and ellipses and start grasping some of the fundamentals of construction, all detailed in like the first two lessons or so, you'll probably start to get Loomis a bit more. Loomis is basically all construction and construction is a bit of a different ballgame from sight drawing.
>>
>>3032650
Not that anon but your facial proportions are so fucked that at this point it would be more beneficial to just straight up hit the books, try to learn some, THEN when you actually have a clue on what you should be aiming for asking for a redline.

Your eyebrows are extremely asymmetrical and your lips dont really show an understanding of the fact that they are fat masses. The rest is really just fixing the fact that you ignored the skull when drawing the hair and just giving more flair and elegance to your lines

draw more from reference and do a lot more of value studies. Your shading is too flat and you don't have a sense for form.
>>
>>3033248
Yeah i have trouble getting down where are the planes and forms. I'm currently using ref to paint contstruction over them, is it interesting enough ? I feel like i can spot the construction but i cannot really use the bits of knowledge i got when it comes to doing a simple face without ref.
>>
How much daily should i be spending on art? im putting in an hour or two every few days, critical self evaluation but not studying from a source.
>>
>>3033286
Even if I assumed that what you're doing is the 'correct method' that produces the best results, you're better of drawing daily and more than just a hour or two.
>>
>>3033303
What is the correct methode though ? Painting construction on top of ref and trying to mimic it ?

>>
>>3033276
learn an abstraction method for the head. Loomis is good for understanding planes and very easy. Learn it by heart and do a lot of drawing by reference using this kind of construction.

If you still find problems you could find some benefit in spending some days just drawing cubes from reference over and over while thinking about perspective and trying to nail down the angles. It isn't that exciting but man does it help.
>>
>>3033311
It was really just a hypothetical. The point is that time must be invested if you want results within a human lifetime.
>>
>>3033317
I have troiuble with loomis. I got the theory but i had trouble getting volumes, i'm trying the Bridgman way and it helped me a lot.

But i'm kind of stuck right now. My faces are obviously better but i still cannot play with the angles as much as i would. I'm gonna keep trying these heads in a cube thingy.

Should i keep tracing over reference to get the construction or is it a bad habit ?
>>
>>3033286
as much as you can. But two hours is pretty good honestly. I think constance is the most important aspect though, I would prefer a regular hour every day other than a sporadic burst of productivity. I found that I improved the most when I started drawing every single day as an habit, like if I had to brush my teeth or another boring habit.
>>
>>3033324
>but i had trouble getting volumes
then you REALLY should try the cube thing. Trust me, it is all in there. If you can't draw something as simple as a cube from reference, you can't draw something as complex as a face. It is pretty straightforward. Once you "get" perspective it is all downhill

When drawing from reference you have to make sure you're capturing the form of the ref and understanding the construction behind it. Otherwise you're just copying contours and it doesn't help at all to improving your understanding.

Plus adding to your visual library is a plus

i do enjoy drawing, i love drawing more than anything else, what really makes me stop is watching, in the end, what i've drawn.
i was drawing a comic that i've been planning for 4+ years (you have no clue how much fun i was having, i was drawing at least 4 to 5 hours a day), i drew 25 pages and then looked back at that first chapter, i felt like shit looking at how horrible it was.

unless you're trying to illustrate cloud streaks that is. the real issue is you dont have banding in your sky (darker at the horizon, goes through colour spectrum towards the top and your clouds near the bottom dont convey depth.

that comic was pure deviantart garbage tier and i deleted it, but there is another one i was making (stopped for the same reason, the drawings are at the same level) , here's a page (keep in mind that i used one of those wood puppets for proportions, and they are still garbage).
This comic was about bart going vrazy and killing everyone, milhouse was the one supposed to stop him (bart was even supposed to become bartman after milhouse trained with ralph and became too strong for him)
This is literally deviantart level trash.

At this point you need to work on pretty much everything. Experience will probably be more helpful than advice. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. If you get stuck on something like this, you might benefit from focusing on something else for a while.

To give you more concrete advice, I think you would benefit most from spending some time on your mark making skills and simplifying things into basic shapes. Look at your lines. They're shaky and inconsistent. The shapes they describe are rough and asymmetrical. Practice drawing lines all over the page with varying speed, pressure, length, direction, etc. Practice drawing small precise marks with your wrist and fingers, practice drawing large smooth lines with your shoulder. Practice doing just contour drawings for a while.
Look at the shape of the iris and the pupil. They should both be nearly perfect circles. If you can't consistently represent simple shapes like these, you are going to struggle with the complex shapes. How are you going to draw the subtle curves of the face and its features if you can't draw a pretty line, a pretty square or circle? Portrait drawing is probably some of the hardest observational drawing you'll do, expect to struggle with producing a likeness until you are very experienced.
Have fun !

Hey guys. What's the best way to practice when you're semi-distracted? I mean that when you're listening to something (like an audiobook) or have a show or something on that you glance at occasionally. I know this isn't inefficient, but I wonder if there's a way to at least make it count some more. Is it simply a matter of still having a reference and drawing from that? Or just trying to perfect simple techniques?
>>
>>3033884
Just keep drawing, shut off all distractions, music and shows. You need to think about what you're drawing. If you're full attention isn't there, you're gonna fuck it up. Seasoned artists can draw semi-distracted because they've built up their habits for so long.
>>
>>3033676
i can't understand what you're saying

>>3033884

Stop doing things that distract you during practice. Is it really hard to figure it out by yourself that you need to ask that question.

One of my biggest problems when drawing is that everything including anatomy just looks too stiff. Took a 2d design class to understand composition more and improve but I still have a problem of instinctively making things too symmetrical/not being able to comprehend what compositions look good and which look bad. I mean I can look at a picture and somewhat understand how it works (because obviously the people knew how to convey their idea) but when making my own pictures I just can't seem to make a good balance and imbalance or movement that doesn't feel 'intentional' if that makes any sense. Any tips?

>>
>>3034339
a general rule of thumb I like to use some times is that the elbow of a fully extended arm typically rests below the bottom of the ribcage and above the belly button. Try making her wrists a tad longer and that should do it.

Good luck

>>3034342
thanks, i'll keep that in mind.

When trying to visualize a drawing think about what your about to draw as a "connect the dots" puzzle. If you have to mark the paper with dots of important areas and then come back with lines later. It helps get rid of nervousness and lets you focus on line quality.

Vast majority of drawings posted here are pretty bad, mine included. This is not a high level at all, it really is /beg/, you can achieve the average /beg/ level in maybe 2-3 months of drawing, if you've never drawn before.

You actually gotta do studies and shit though, it's nice to draw what you like on your fun time, but you also need work time. Your brain just does not posses a good visual library, you have to expand it. Your arms and hands do not have a good muscle memory, you have to train it. It's that simple.

Break anatomy down into bite sized pieces and tackle it, This is a chance for you to challenge yourself and overcome a plateau. I really dont recommend Loomis for intermediate anatomy, But If you're really lacking in that area by all means go ahead and snort some Loomis.
>>
>>3033712
Compare some body parts to others. Those hands can almost fit inside her ears. Hands are so very important, they can make of break a drawing, you hid one and the other one is that of a toddler. Do some hand studies, then do figure drawings where you actually lay down the hands.

fix that head.. it goes more to the right and you can see his neck.. his torso is quite a big longer, and it's curved, that little straight line u drew doesn't fit there, just curve it all the way up to the neck, at least to use for reference

other than that is not bad, good job on the left arm and hand

this is already going to be a terrible piece simply because of the work you're putting into it - the time you're spending is giving you the opposite quality

why are there so many elements? where is your focal point? why is everything so meticulously detailed instead of implied details? if you want a tight, cleaned-up envo why don't you do lineart?

pic related is what's considered a "good" painting because it's hitting everything that a painting is supposed to strengthen: the idea in not too many brushstrokes. there is no one aspect that is too detailed than anything else not in the background where it takes up too much of your eye time when you look at it. whereas in your painting there's too much detail that it's overwhelming

i'd suggest watching demos on youtube regarding how your favorite artists render their landscapes (from start to finish- notice their process of blocking in, including the design stage: for some reason you're randomly adding elements to your piece when you get done overdetailing one aspect of it). This is just confusing to look at.

I'm doing it as a hobby and I barely even have the time work on it.

>s that all you work on or do you do other studies and stuff?
It's the only painting I'm working on right now
>>3034404
I really do need to work on my approach to painting, I keep getting obsessed with minor details while ignoring other parts like a man with ADD/OCD, it's probably what slows me down

>this is already going to be a terrible piece simply because of the work you're putting into it - the time you're spending is giving you the opposite quality
why?

Also, I don't really know any artists that I would like to follow, any recommendations?

Cracks everywhere. You can get the one for Sai 1 just from google and someone even uploaded it to deviantart.

CGP's SAI 2 beta

(beta is from https://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/devdept.html)

I also have a cracked copy of Photoshop CC 2017 which you can get off almost every torrent site) and clip studio paint which was cracked by the folks on Persia too.

Or you can just use Krita instead of installing a bitcoin miner onto your pc

Art program choice (familiarity/explitability) probably contributes about 20% to work quality. It definitely helps to shop around.

First time poster here. I drew from when I was pretty young and enjoyed it a lot, I got really good grades but in high school, I let a really strong crush distract me from it. I'm twenty two now and want more than anything to be able to draw again because it was the only thing I excelled at. But each time I pick up a pencil, I wind up so frustrated because nothing comes out right due to the rustiness that has built up over the years. So I quit, then feel bad about quitting and this cycle just repeats. My head is full of ideas, but it feels like there is a 'disconnect' between my mind and hand. I bought an art tablet last year but it just gathers dust.

I feel stuck. Does anyone have any tips to get out of this rut so I can get back to drawing regularly and enjoying it? Should I just force myself to draw 'til it gets gets easier and eventually becomes second nature like it used to be?

I mean something more controlled and deliberate like pic.

Keep practicing and maybe read or skim a book on figure drawing by loomis or hampton so that you start to break down figures into simpler forms.

How much are you sketching?
I can't give you much specific advice. It just seems like you need to draw more and break out of your comfort zone.
Do some nude full figure drawings to see where your weak points are, and use that info to guide your studies.

Do some painting with Bob Ross. You could even use your tablet if you like, though it'll be harder.

You'll find it really hard to get angry and quit while painting with someone as lovely as Bob so you should be fine. It'll help remind you of the joy of painting!

does upside down drawing fix symbol drawing?
>>
>>3034486
Speed. Just to give a quick idea of what the hand pose is. Either speed, or laziness if they have the time. If you're going for a finished drawing, don't give your characters scissor hands, but it's good for gesture drawing when you only got a couple of minutes and you're just capturing the essence of a pose.
>>
>>3034708
No, he is A LOT more hunched forward. That square on the bottom you drew would kind of represent his buttocks, right? They're kind of in a 3D C shape, idk how to explain, like a banana, they aren't just pointing down cause his legs are forward. Then you drew a straight line on top of his buttocks, second time I see that this thread on that reference picture, I just don't understand why. You can literally see his lower back's arch, it's visible in the picture, nothing goes straight up, just a tiny part of the ass. That makes your drawing look like some someone is just standing up and moving his head a tiny bit forward as if trying to listen to someone, while your reference is similar to a super hunched football player.

Nope. Copying an image turned upside down is what helps with it. Nothing changes if you draw from imagination upside down.

I'm still having trouble distinguishing what is and isn't/ what should or shouldn't be 1 or 2 point perspective.

Does this work as 1 point?
>>
>>3034857

Yes. When you try to draw a face. A real face you end up trying to copy it and mix it with your memory of what a face is. Because the brain knows it's a face it overlaps the information with a simplified version of face you've known and seen all your life.

Now when you turn it upside down the brain doesn't do that. You know it's a face but how many upside down face do you see in your daily life?

Now you require to consciously analyze it. The shapes, form etc... And the more you do this the new information will replace the unreliable memory of a face that you have.

It takes time and you'll feel frustrated but don't give up. Even when you don't feel like you're progressing the brain is doing it's work processing the information. Eventually it will click. If you think it's too much just take a break for the day but don't give up.
>>
