I think people are being unreasonably harsh. It looks like they're fighting/playing. Everything doesn't need to be "bad ass" or fucking intense.

The flow and movement in the image is great and the scale doesn't need to be realistic. I don't think it's the point here.

I thought the mouse poses looked unnatural.
Their poses didn't really fit with the movements I would think giant mice would make as they fight small lions.

Here are my suggestions
>>
>>3022112

Well no... I hate furry stuff. This image looks more like something I'd expect to see in a children's book. I don't know if it's OP's intention but if you rate it as such it's a pretty fine looking image.

I wasn't saying what I was saying because I want to "save" him/her or even to be nice. I said it because I want to "save" the image. I said it so they wouldn't cave into the stupid ideas.
>>
>>3022128

Thanks for the redline. I'll keep that in mind, although I prefer my version of the right mouse (facing the lion instead of facing to the side). I appreciate the tips on the posing. I definitely need to change the weight impact on the right spear now that you've pointed it out.
>>
>>3022037
Not sure why everyone is being so harsh. It looks fine and readable enough to me. I'd say just refine the linework a bit and you've got an excellent piece going. The only issue is that this piece doesn't really tell a story, but it is technically good nonetheless, keep it up!

It was mostly one dude that was having a conniption over my mouse pic, I think the others were spot-on about the changes I could make to improve it.

I'm trying to roughly figure out the lighting right now. So messy. Also, I don't intend to keep the outlines, they're mostly just a guide.

I'm just trying to be helpful.
When I post my wips, I want to know what other people have to say about it. A bunch of people saying vague compliments like "great job" might make me feel good for a bit, but it does not help me improve my work.

Testing light source, still can't decide on how to draw the right hand...
>>
>>3022213
I'm not that anon, but you really shouldn't brush off his confusion over why the mice are so huge. Yeah, they're not supposed to be to-scale, I get that, but the size of the mice decides the whole narrative of the piece. Right now, the lion is the underdog against 2 giant mutant rodents with spears hunting it for sport, instead of 2 mice overcoming the odds and fighting a large, dangerous predator. But maybe that's exactly what you were going for, I don't know.
>>
>>3022232
That is what I was going for, more or less. That's why I gave one the skull hat.

I wouldn't normally brush critique off, but that guy just came off as weird so I disregarded his remarks. Couldn't tell if he was trolling or if he really was struggling with the concept of giant cartoon mice. All of his comments after that were like... 'k mate.

I didn't paint over the colors but keep in mind that skin will always have a different tones to it even with a strong light source such as yours there will be variations in color. I will add another picture of Grimes in such colors to illustrate my point. I assume your light source is coming from the right?

I hadn't noticed you updating this so excuse my paintover and at this point you can just consider it extra food for thought. It slightly changes the dynamic of the lion as its no longer beneath them however I think it'd be better for the composition overall and potentially have more interesting shapes.

Slightly based on how Yoshinari handles his shape design in; https://sakugabooru.com/post/show/9758

>>
>>3022721
Great line work! If you have trouble with folds then I suggest ignoring them altogether, or adopting Bruce Tim's method of fold rendering, which is limited to where the limbs bend and rotate and drawing simplistically. Think BTAS and work from there. Nothing is worse than ugly clothing folds.

Your anatomy is great, but like me your hand isn't very steady. You certainly understand shape and form, and like to draw fast, and your characters have, well... character. You can read their personalities on their faces, and in the way they carry themselves. Your hatching and cross hatching isn't rendering any tone, and maybe your lines could be a lil' cleaner, but I do understand this is a quick, rough sketch. You're doing good, anon! Keep getting better!

Different anon. Lips are drawn as if they're angled more downward than the head is, the eyes are angled more forward, the tip of her nose is rotated to her left.

Imagine a box encompassing the head and clearly defining all the relevant axes. All the individual features don't match up with each other or the head. They're all slightly off.
>>
>>3022865
>>3022913
Easiest way to see it is to take your hand and cover parts of the head. Cover the whole head so that you only see the lips and chin. Notice how your mind fills in the blank for what the orientation of the head must be, then when you uncover it the painting itself is jarring.

I feel a lack of power in this one .... maybe changing the pose of the demon?
help ...
>>
>>3023008
Your composition is boring. If you want power and drama then make it dramatic. Push the perspective more so cherub is really close to the camera, or try getting some overlaps and more dramatic lighting in there with a stronger value read. Changing the pose could help too as right now she is very passive. The dragon heads too could be cooler, and maybe have one or two extending and stretching outwards for some cool shapes in the composition instead of mushing them all into a ball.
>>
>>3022791
sorry, don't have one.
>>
>>3023008

>>3023013 < This

Also I think that your composition suffers from being cut in half right at the middle. It's like two completely separate illustrations. The separate parts look really nice but you should try to unify the piece somehow. Maybe tilt the camera and make make the perspective read better by emphasizing the size difference of the characters more.
>>
>>3023008

Oh and I think it would be better if you had some parts of the angel and the dragon thing overlapping so we can see that it's in front of it. Now it's a bit of a tangent.

These are really nice.
I'm especially liking the forms on the first one a lot.
That said, be careful that the darkest value on your drawing isn't the outline, as it flattens the image a bit. I think the third piece is more successful than the second, largely due to the value surrounding the lower half of the figure- you get a much better sense of space and value there.
>>3023292
I dig the way you handled odie here, it reads well and is super absurd. I think the composition could use some adjustments. I wonder if it would function better if garfield and jon were pushed a little more to our left and a little bit lower as well, almost beneath Odie's right shoulder.
Also I feel less may be more in this case- Odie functions well because his form is so simplified, I actually think the way you handled his left arm is one of the most successful parts of this piece thus far. Garfied gets a little too complex, a lot of those forms could be described in fewer values, and in my opinion would read better.

Lastly, maybe you just haven't addressed it yet, but I had trouble reading garfield's hand as grabbing jon.
>>
>>3023292
I love this! But it feels messy to me.

That's actually a great point! Didn't even think of that. Maybe he has a zipper on the back? Like he had that shit custom made? I dunno. I wouldn't like to change those stumpy legs. I will though if other people think that his feet are dumb. I could give him some crocodile leather boots if he had normal legs. Should I do that? Dunno...

How badly did i fuck up the anatomy? she's suppose to be floating with one leg slightly raise.

Just posted this to my IG not that long ago. Trying to get back into traditional inking and not relying on Copics to do all my shading.

The right leg just looks abnormally long. Even the left leg is a bit too long to begin with, and you might want to actually bend it up (from the hip) or have a more dynamic pose that makes it look like she's floating.

Found a reference for ya. You're on the right track with the ripples but you'll want to add more blue to your water. If you want to make something visible below the surface, make it stand out from the color of the water, e.g. color it green or black or something. Don't forget to make it gradually fade towards blue the deeper the object is in the water.

I'd suggest making the dark princess less contrasting, maybe bring the colors closer together and use softer edges there, so that the top princess is the main focal point and then your eyes slide to the lower one, instead of getting confused as to where to look first.

you make me so angry dude. you're just trying your damnedest to imitate you favorite artist of the month all the time. a while back all your shit looked like bad attempts at copying Ruan Jia, and now every.single.thing you do looks like bad Mullins imitations.
for fucks sake man, copying artist you like is good for you, but not to the point when all your work screams of you copying a certain artist.
try mixing some of all the artists you admire and twist it a bit to create your own style, don't just try and make your painting looks like they're another artist's work.
for fucks sake man. get a fucking spine.

I mean if you're gonna learn from copying an artist, you might as well go all the way. Better chance of learning something subtle if you fully commit, and you can later analyze what you liked and didn't like about that artist's approach. Things you like, even things you didn't expect to like if you hadn't committed to a full copy, will merge into your regular work.
>>
>>3025444
have you ever thought that only reason why he got to potential level was because of this type of studying, I mean didn't every good artist do this even Mullins himself with Sargent? The dude mad improved so quickly and I think he's only like 20 so he has plenty of time to find himself.
>>

He's clearly investing his time better than you are. Why do you take such personal interest in what he does to find his own way?

To me, at least, it just looks too stiff. Also, some of the features you added to her make her look fairly old, perhaps early-mid middle age(not sure if that's the direction you were going considering she sounds like a Ms. Marvel/Rogue fusion). The expression also kinda doesn't match the pose, its too happy for such a powerful, defiant pose imo

Changed her head, face, knees, arm muscles and a bit of lighting.
It's ok tho, no flaw really stands out, just keep at it.
A more of a suggestion from me is about your style. Your colors are flat with no variation, your shading doesn't tell me anything about the warmth or intensity of your light source and the thick black outline flattens everything out.
It's not your fault, but this workflow leaves very little room for improvement.

These have a similar process, try experimenting a bit and think about what you can do to make your style more sophisticated and personal.

Cool design and clean linework, and I specialy like the clean looseness of the half bottom.
I don't really understand the
>give the rending more room to express itself
You don't have to not lineweight to have a great rendering. They can coexist in the same artwork.

I know at the moment you are not going to re-do the linework, but if you do, at least have some weight in the skin, where it works better.
And also, try to fix pic related if you check the lines. The shoulders and the "boobs" should be higher. Maybe it's a design decision, but it's bugging me even though i'm not an anatomy expert

As a general question/non question, I find it a bit strange how many people have gravitated to Zedigs style in recent times when what hes drawing from is so much more diverse, have you gone through his inspiration tumblr? Did you see any other artists that are closer to the source for his ideas that you may pull from instead?

That said its a rabbit hole worth persuing as eventually you'll end up with that approach to stylization becoming yet further removed from its origins.

I'm really not that good at texturing! A lot of this stuff is just photobashing, though I did manage to do an okay job on some of the textures by hand. Here's the final. It's too busy and the design is "Mehh". I'm going to spend the rest of the summer doing value studies and shit like that to get quicker at painting so I don't have to use photo textures for concept stuff.

If you really wanna learn texturing I recommend buying Dave Rapoza's orc tutorial and trying to find Brad Rigney's 4h. "A Hostile Takeover" tutorial on tha web and getting Scott Robertson's "How to Render"-book. If you want to mix photo stuff into your character workflow I recommend getting Maxim Verehins "Pokémon Hunters" video from Gumroad where you get to watch him do his magic for >10h. Oh and also study study study...

I'm quite surprised that I learned a lot about texturing when I had to try and blend the photo details to the painted stuff so you could probably benefit from doing some matte painting too. But this is just basically the blind leading the blind so... Yeah.

I know you probably aren't close to a final product but you need some focus. The rest I like a lot but I feel like it's missing some focal point, it all is background to an invisible protagonist.
>>
>>3023008
I think the solution could be through the green/blue light of the demonic figure. Show the demon's emanating force through the strong presence of its light. I would try almost everything that isn't a strong color nearby to be a shade of the green/blue.

Trying to get faster so tried to limit my time, 20min for sketch+lineart and 20 for colours
Not happy with the end result, but my lineart is definitely getting faster. I don't like the airbrush look for shading but I didn't really have enough time to figure something else out since I know fuck all about digital painting, I'll experiment with more shit.
Guess I should also try exaggerating features more if I'm going to draw a 'monster' too
>>
>>3028444

I don't really think you can get faster by just forcing it. It's a better idea to try and do work that aesthetically pleases you. You said you don't like the airbrushed look so try working with a hard brush and spending more time on your piece. The speed will come with experience.

critiques on her face?
>>
>>3028667
her neck should be wider, and her shoulders bigger too
>>
>>3028683
It depends on what they're going for with the style. But that aside, they asked for critiques on her face, specifically.
>>
>>3028683
just to chime in, if people look past your style and focus on anatomy even though you intentionally tweaked it to your liking, then that means its not working. anatomy tweaking is only ever forgivable when the whole product looks pleasing.

That's all. carry on.
>>
>>3028687

the hair, dude. the hair silhouette perfectly lines up to the jaw making a whole weighty feeling balancing precariously on that pencil dick neck

yeah, i was looking for critiques on her face, but i completely agree with the last anon. A style can indeed hurt the eyes. i painted this thinking more on the face, but i guess i should not do that because im posting this online. I need to be more careful about my stuff even it is a doodle or a speed painting. Well, i guess the face is ok if anyone of u guys did not say a thing about it. I'm supposed to be doing a cover art for some R&B album thing. I have absolutely no fucking clue what I'm doing. I usually paint orcs and vampires and shit. Jesus fucking Christ this feels hard. Maybe I should try to do something much simpler? Any tips or inspiration would be great. They want some 80's sci-fi looking shit and they want that pyramidesque building in the shot (It's an ugly/colorful local landmark but they like it for some reason). I'm like 3h. into this and it's simply not starting to come together.
>>
>>3028810

>>
>>3028814

Well I sure hope so. I'm only doing this because I'm totally fucking broke. Fortunately I don't think they know much about good graphic design or illustration in general so if I can just make it look "professional enough" I'm golden... Definitely not a portfolio piece for me. I still don't want to disappoint people.
>>
>>3028810
I don't know about R&B, maybe some dark 80s throwback thing, but it looks cool as heck.

I don't see why would the deltoids be so square and bulky, they are pretty relaxed and coated in fat.
Nice redline though.

With those clouds the light should be diffused as fuck, so much lower contrast between light and shadow family.

>>3028785
Nice style, could work well for book illustration etc., but the giraffe is pretty fucked up. Every leg has different set of joints, she has no pelvis and her head looks like some fucking dragon m8.
The style and background is nice, but study your subject before you frankenstein something so horrifying.

Listen to their music if they let you and adjust the colors to feel like it belongs together. The deep blue / orange with this kind of design is a lil' bit cliché.

>>3028850

Thanks for the tips. I've listened to it while doing this. It's pretty basic R&B/Rap- stuff. Not my cup of tea but that's none of my business. I think I'm gonna play it safe for now even if it might feel a little boring and cliché. Just clean up the building ad addd a little texture on it. Maybe some cheap/glitchy chromatic aberration on the sun and some old shiny paper textures over the whole thing to sell the vintage look.

If I may say, the red on multiply mode doesn't work well with the green at all.
>>
>>3028855
Your cooworker was right, though it makes me question if you are working with 12 year olds . XD Nice gesture, try to define a few more fingers even when the hand is in a back position like that.

If you wanted to ungay the gesture you'll remember overlap next time when drawing the far arm.
>>
>>3028867
When you do these gestures work on your -big picture- perspective. While you have some sculpting going on, it's as if the eye was looking at the top, then the mid, then the bottom, with no horizon line.

Try to contain the gesture as a whole in a single box in space. That front foot for example, we see its side in perfect profile but that doesn't fit with the perspective of the top.
>>
>>3029122
I wouldn't say that's bad for a time limit. You could easily make that into something.

The single horn is unappealing to me personally I would balance it out, but its your design.
>>
>>3028667

head looks great. Neck and shoulders are too small.
It's just a matter of either decreasing head size or body size
>>
>>3026905
Hmm... the texture looks more irregular and rough than scales. Scales form a neat tesselation. Maybe try to tone down the noise a bit and give it more regularity. Also, the contrast between the scaly texture and the smooth texture looks a bit weird to me
