Posted this on QTDDTT but I guess is makes more sense to ask here, Just started with Keys to Drawing, I have a little problem, in the excercises there are some time estimates as to how long it should take you to complete the drawing but for example with the green pepper one (1-c) it says 40 minutes but I spend like 20, I make sure to draw with care to detail but I still do too little time

How would you find the vanishing points on an image that is looking downward? Do downward shots like this have a horizon line?
>>
>>3019182
"downward" is just a concept in your mind in this case.
>>
>>3019182

if you want to do it by eye, you can look at the edges of the rectangular buildings that are perpendicular to "ground level" and see where they meet, because the hole has its vanishing point there as well. it's probably about 100-150 pixels south of the "center" of the hole's black circle of darkness. It is below the bottom of the photograph

Perspective Made Easy covers this, towards the end IIRC

What do you guys think about training gesture like this.

Or should I train gestures in 30-60 second time limits.

I just tried drawing with a tablet for the first time, and I can't do anything with it. It's like I can't even predict what angle a line will turn out. I literally can't even draw a fucking box like this. How can I get over this?
>>
>>3019353
Learn to draw on paper, I remember multiple digital artists mentioned that drawing on tablet is harder than on paper and if you learning the basics you making it harder on yourself.
>>

>tfw learning to draw the basics on digital

>>
>>3019357
That's what I've done so far. I just thought I'd practice with the tablet on the side so I could get used to it. But at this point I feel like I'll never be able to switch to digital and that's kinda hurting my motivation.
>>

Well, if thats any consolation, there is always a chance you bought shitty cheap tablet.

>>
A couple of questions before I start trying to draw still life:
1. Should I start with objects at eye-level and prgress to different angles?
2. Should I aim to fill the page with my subject, does drawing bigger make a difference?
>>
>>3019374
No, it's a Wacom Intuos. Maybe it's a bit small but I'm not sure that's it. I wonder if a tablet with screen would work better, but those are too expensive to get while I'm not that good yet.

Are there any books on drawing building and environments, not just drawing building that exist and environment. I need to understand what can make a building appeal or an environment attractive to someone.

As you can see i suck at perspective as well, I need help in that as well.
>>
>>3019376
it doesn't really matter

usually yes, drawing small and economical can develop bad habits and make you more prone to chicken scratching
>>
>>3019380
Noob advice here but.
I would advise you to draw real buildings.

Its something that occurred to me recently but, every drawing I saw takes from RL a thing and spins it sometimes to unrecognizable levels but its always something form RL.
In fact I think we can't design anything from void.

I was learning how to draw mech but except watching tutorials and reading books I was trying to design one myself and at the end I ended up with something looking very similar to mechs drawn by artists.

What made it were horse legs, in clad armor with actuators I copied from a crane and all kind of servos.
It was a mech but it was something I arrived at myself.

Lately I was drawing a combat suit and took inspiration from a soviet flight suit, with zippers and tie laces and actually existing mechanism that increase body pressure by pumping suit with water.
I put water lines where tendons or muscles would go, into fluid pumps and valves, covered the design in material.
At the end I ended up with something straight from MGS, even my "original" design of fluid lines following muscle lines looked like in MGS.
Not only this but it was the costume that supposed to increase body strength and endurance as real soviet flight suit would except to a greater degree.

Imagine my surprise when I ended up with a mix of gantz suit that circulates some kind of fluid for the exact this purpose and MGS suit visually.

As I looked more carefully every single design I considered original was based on something just twisted the right way.

So as to your question, do not look for a guide how to make appealing design or give you an answer what appeals to people, study architecture and then use your talent to twist and mix things you learn.
Although guide how to draw appealing stuff undoubtedly exists somewhere if you were to copy someone else style you wouldn't really learn anything, you would be just copying someone else style.

That said I am still a noob and cant draw a for shit.

But yeah I'm not too well versed in anatomy, I could be wrong.
It looks like her knees are both facing directly right of the viewer but the ankles are twisted forward slightly, I just thought that seems kind of awkward to do in real life without twisting your entire leg as well.

Oh I see what you mean. The left foot is positioning forward and the knee should probably follow that. In that case, I probably drew the left leg wrong as I don't think legs can curve like that. lol

So help me out here, while reading a Loomis book on Heads and Hands i came across some notes someones etched in the book saying it WRONG!

Loomis says
>The thing to remember is that the skull is fixed in position, and with the exception of the jaw, immovable, and that the flesh is mobile and ever-changing, and also affected by health, emotion, and age.

Now I agree with Loomis on this statement, the skin being affected by emotion seems strange to me though.
Anyone on here disagree with this or can enlightening me why this statement might be proven wrong? Possibly by a Medifag or whatever...

Try to draw/paint them three dimensional. Her face is tilted towards our right/east, so where is her nose gonna point to? It can't be centered, let the nose pop out. Same with the mouth, it ain't just a bigger line and a smaller line, it's closer on the left and further on the right, think of them that way. Your right cheek looks like it was punched in cause of the shadows and lips.

One very distinct characteristic of her face is how her eyes kinda go down on the outside, they look gloomy, while yours both are pointing up, like happy chinese, that makes her look like a completely different person.

Finish it, you won't regret it since you'll have something to show people what you're capable of instead of unfinished work. It feels like it's taking way too long because you've never gone this far before and biting off way more than you can chew is good, it means you're growing. Also that feeling of wanting to work on something else? Another sign that is this the right path. Keep at it, anon, you'll do great, I like how it's looking already.

did I do this right? (looking at it in a photo I can already see the shoulders are uneven)
if anyone has reference of this pose that would be great, for some reason "head tilted down" and other variations of that phrase only give me reference photos of people with their head tilted to the side, I've used google and the refrence photo links in the sticky.

Sure but you won't get shit from a ref with no definition. You will learn to simplify the body into basic shapes but in terms of actual anatomy you won't get shit. DesignDoll is useful for people who already know how to draw from imagination and are practicing perspective.

Help, is there anything wrong ? Thanks anons
>>
>>3020196
several (many) things:

First the perspective.
I have no idea where I am in perspective to this character. Am I looking up to them? Down on them? Same height as them?
It's confusing, because I can see the top of their shoes, their right arm, yet also the side of the backpack and am seeing the underside of the what I presume is a helmet? At the same time I can't see the chin of the person from below, the right eye takes up more place on their face than the left, despite looking to the right (which should make it so that the eye takes up less of the face percentage wise).

Then arm length. up to the elbow they are okayish, but from there on to the hand the arms are simply too short.

Then the hand holding the rifle: it feels a bit small, and the placement is weird. There is no reason to grab the rifle where this character is grabbing it, and if one did, it would be oriented the other way (the shoulder part of the rifle is heavier than the barrel). It could work if the rifle was connected to a shoulder-strap, but alas: it isn't.

The shadow is also confusing, because it's applied so inconsistently. Their left foot isn't in the shadow, which makes it look like the foot is lifted into the air?

Are the proportions alright? What is the worst part of this drawing?

I ran out of space for the feet, but the body itself is 8 heads tall.
The 3/4 view is fucked up, to me it seems like she is hunching a bit, also in both views the vagina is either way too high or the hands/arms are too long.
The 3/4 view face is full of symbol drawing, I thought I had gotten rid of it after going through the entirety of Drawing on the right side of the brain, but maybe not.

Well I mean it's the thread for it and all

Where do I learn about proportions? I read Loomis Figure Drawing section on it and I've been practicing for a while but it just doesn't seems to come out right.
As for perspective, you mean of the entire body right? I read something about that on Vilppu's Drawing Manual but I still dont get it, if I want to draw that woman where do I locate the horizon line and vanishing points? Or am I confusing things here?
>>
Its weird. after i tried painting a couple times, I cant draw with the pencil the same anymore.

This unsettled me and I just sat on the feeling for a week or so and today I realized I might be getting over my cartoon/manga-inspired obsession over perfect lines/perfect pencil sketches.

at least i think so. i just dont get the same kick out of making dingy little drawings anymore.

Is anyone else familiar with this exercise in the Vilppu drawing manual?

You are basically supposed to take a sphere and a solid form such as a cube, etc and conjoin them like they are wrapped in a sheet or something.

It is an exercise meant to develop your understanding of 3D forms. If you can grasp this concept, then you have the foundation to draw anything, since any form can be analysed as an amalgamation of much simpler forms.

Just have fun with it, try drawing simple cartoons or anything you can think of

can someone recommend me a routine? I have a fulltime job, and between feeding myself and shitposting and whatnot I can only make time to draw for a couple hours most days. I usually start off warming up with lots of straight lines, curves, waves (the 8x repeated thing), and ellipses, but by the time I get through just these I'm like 40 minutes in, and basically have no time or energy to put a lot of effort into drawing something I actually want to draw. I've also tried occasionally mixing up this routine with some gesture practice and boxes in perspective, but I feel like I'm just not getting enough practice with anything. I havent even begun to think about value or any kind of rendering stuff, but I can't imagine where I can fit that into my routine, unless I start changing these dailies into weeklies and just cycling through them each day or something. someone please help!

Yes but as a beginner you do lots of beginner mistakes and you never correct them because you never know better.

Get on some tutorials and reading books.
For gesture I suggest proko figure drawing series, for perspective, D'Amelio and Norlng.

When it comes to proportions supposedly Hale is the best because cranial width and height is the same regardless how you look at it and can be used even at extreme perspective angles.

To fit an arm into a box of 6 for example all you have to do is draw a box and divide it with one of this methods.
http://andreasaronsson.com/guides/perspective-drawing/divide-into-equal-parts/
It will work regardless of perspective.

same. but what can i say. Its all in practice. I don't do enough. Like with guitar, i studied daily for a while and got good for my time playing but then i stopped, now ive fallen behind by a mile. Then I look at my art. I practise as a hobby and i've gotten better but my consistency is still of. I do some amazing self portraits and aheago art. Then I drop the ball. But if I keep at it I'll get better. My problem is lack of focus. Same with everything really

Trying to stick with practicing gesture drawing. Pretty fun too. Any tips?
>>
>>3020402

concerning the portrait itself try to improve specifically on shape and value.

on shape it helps a lot when one has a frame for a figure to be drawn, start with the usual egg head then add the values from there with light to darkening pressures of pencil

which brings us to value. one of the bad habits I consider as a beginner artist is the habit of pressing down too much on the canvas with the pencil or pen. it's always better to start light, very light. this is to help in erasures, and to adjust on whether to darken further. going too dark allows less modification and erasures

as another tip:
try using the eraser more, apart from being a tool for cleaning the canvas, it can also be used to lighten values.
>>
>>3021184

This isn't that bad, work on the feet and hands in this drawing and you're doing a lot better than most.

Ribcage too long and, along with shoulders, attempts to incorporate three different angles at the same time; head is too far back and not wide enough at the same time; eyes too deep, forehead angle too sharp; arms a bit too skinny, with lower arm too long; the hand is terrible; legs too detached from the butt/too far forward; upper legs too short compared to the lower part; heels too far forward; feet without any real shape
pic related is a first decently similar result from google images for comparison

>>3020981
Half of that rendering is the paper, the other half is the trick to make the middle of the shadow darker than the outside parts. Well not exactly the middle but you'll hopefully notice what I'm talking about.

There is no reason to do it this way, you're only muddling the result. Decide on a few colors/values, block them and only after that consider adding in-betweens. Also avoid pictures taken with shitty phones when looking for a color reference, you won't believe how much they can fuck the palette up.

I made this picture some months ago (or even a year, I'm not sure) and now I want to make a new version. Do you have any constructive criticism for me? What should I make different to make it look better?
>>
>>3021321
fix the face, work on the skulls a bit more, maybe lower the legs and show the other arm
>>
>>3019202

What about situations where there is complex objects that do not have a clear edge to use as a basis for determining a horizon? Like say human that is jumping in a weird pose. Or multiple objects that are not parallel to each other. Or a natural landscape. Or the picture doesn't even have a ground, just random objects floating in space not parallel to each other whatsoever.

How do you work with a vanishing point that is way above or below the picture plain, as in when the "camera" starts to look into the floor and such. Or is it the same as if the vanishing point going way out to the sides? Can 1\2\3 point perspectives be used together for such cases? Is it like rendering one object in the scene and then you start the whole process over again for a different object that is not parallel to the one you just made or are you totally stuck with whatever VP\horizon you have?

It's kinda painful to wrap my head around this concepts for some reason.

Not OP, but this is relevant to my interest.

Do you mean 3 points of view? Like showing too many sides of the ribcage at the same time?

>head is too far back and not wide enough at the same time
Far forward maybe? Or far back from view?

Really helpful critique thank you. The picture is great as well. What did you google to find it?

>>3020981
Like he said, the grain of the paper adds texture. The rest is just applying basic lighting. The back area is lit, then there is the edge of the shadow which is darkest and soft ambient light on the other side. It helps to know some anatomy to show the form better. Shade lightly with the pencil.

I've found that making the proportions "shorter" (around 6 heads tall) makes it work but that's exactly what you did.

is there any leeway for drawing faces?

Like lowering the eyes a lot more and just scrunching the face? I'm just wondering because it seems like even if something is off proportion by centimeters it looks horrible.

Go grind shading basic sphere first, then you can hold a concept to make realistic drawing
