This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

Using reference is fine, you're teaching your brain how to construct something and overtime you can use that knowledge without references. With tracing you don't learn anything.

>>
>>2988262
Don't finish it your perspective is fucked beyond saving. You need to post with construction if you want a proper critique.
>>
>>2988244
No, you're not allowed to use any reference whatsoever due to some arbitrary rule that some fucktard thought up, even though every single professional uses reference for their work. That's cheating, you know.
>>
>>2988264

>stylized

>>
>>2988277
Theres no hope for me is there
>>
>>2988271
Don't give up like that. Not everything needs a construction. Sometimes I like to do the boxes on one page, and then use that in tandem with references to draw a clean sheet without construction.

Means I can bend the rules in some places, and the final products look less mechanical.

Keep it, come back to it later on. The errors will be obvious. For now, try some easier angles

>>2988257
>>2988265
I try to find references for materials or anatomy from a different angle than I'm drawing. The danger with references is becoming dependent on copying them. Read:Proko... Your inagination has to do work if your material reference isn't in the same perspective.

You dont have the skill to execute what you're visualizing, it's good to be ambitious but dont neglect the basics.

i think it comes down having a thread where one can expect it to be filled mostly with a illustrations that dont have to be critiqued on how close to reality it is. Sure the emphasis is on simply the aesthetic appeal, but i do agree younger peeps do tend to lean on forming a "style" rather than learning the proper stuff because they want to feel like an individual and not a knockoff. I can see where it comes from, and its something you eventually get over, but yea.

>>2988526
I like the pose and legs, but her anatomy looks really strange. I think you fucked up her pelvis, but idk.
>>
>>2988698
The overall all image looks stiff, the foot looks wonky in the perspective thanks to the heel and the simple shape of the boot lacking dimension the shoulders don't look like they shifting in an arc enough with how straight the arm looks, right hand should back up more and bend at the elbow the reach the handlebar in the photo, and the fingers look quite bulky. the stance on the motorcycle simply doesn't have a nice appeal or rhythm to it, probably cause the perspective of the figure is slightly different then the motorcycle, so the difference in scale is tripping up my brain or something.

tl:dr The overall image looks stiff.

Goggles on the helmet is nicely detailed.
>>
>>2988717
yea it feels like the pelvis wants to be turned slightly, but the groin is communicating that its a front view. I'm trying to retain that curve in the hips, but at that angle it makes the curve more flat? or smaller where it looks like its too small? The angle is messing with my mind.

>>2988858
the problem with tracing 3d is that usually if the artist dosnt know anatomy enough, he/she might end up not drawing small but nescessary lines that indicates to de viewer the depth or shape of whatever is being drawn... when you use a reference you usually "understand" the shape of the reference and then later reproduces it on the drawing

A few of my friends went through dental school, it sounded awful. They would be whittling teeth on the floor while we were playing board games. You are graded / ranked on how much money you can milk from your patients. Now they have to compete with each other and other dentists to open offices and poach each other's patients.

I would recommend bioengineering or data science if you are into neuroscience. There is a lot of work to be done collecting and processing large data sets for patient studies and health IT.
>>
>>2988990
i feel bad for the people who are gonna make you slightly mad. youll probably rip out your teeth and go crying in a corner because of your hurt feelings. the fact that you are canadian really explains a lot.
>>
>>2988997
im not interested in neuroscience, I honestly want nothing to do with it. It's just that the campus I was admitted to only offers that program. I just want to do undergrad studies there and then get into the dental school at U of T. The only thing I'm thinking about still is that U of T is really harder than other schools, and thinking whether or not I should do undergrad at an easier uni, rather than a hell hole like U of T. Cause t b h dental schools just care about the gpa..

I know it sounds awful at first, but the money you make later on is like 200k a year, and if you specialize into something like ortho or endo, you can make upwards of about 500-600k a year.

>>
>>2989007
>do undergrad at an easier uni
probably a good idea, my friends went to MIT for undergrad and then dental school / med school. I have no idea why except they are masochists.

>200k a year
>500-600k a year
Anecdotally, my surgeon friends should eventually be earning 500k, but they are still in residency, and end to end will take 10yrs after undergrad

My dentist friends are pulling about 150k which took 5 yrs after undergrad, but by that time I was earning 200k as an engineer. Plus I had been already working 5yrs and I didn't have any med school debt, so they are about 1mil behind me.

Doctors will eventually have a higher base salary, but engineers get stock. 10yrs after undergrad I should also be earning about 500k (including RSUs)

The most important take away is that I didn't stay in school for another 5 yrs, and I earned money at a dead end job, and had free time to make drawing a hobby.

Strongly reminds me of this artist.

As for some crit...
Her lower spine and left leg seem weird. The amplitude between the waist and the leg joint is too big. And I'm not sure that the pinky toe on her right leg is positioned correctly. Oh, and ze arms (including her palms) are disproportionaly beefy for such a slender body.

Finally, her swimsuit looks like it is not wrapping the booty tightly at all. But if it isn't, then it should have fallen down into her butt crack. And if it is, you have to show creases that it makes in the skin.

honestly just shade with colors, then put a layer above your whole drawing, fill it in with black, set it to "color" and you can see your values. just turn the layer off and on when you need to check.
i feel like switching to better coloring would really push you forward

I don't think they work though. The face of that androgynous being between two old guys at the center is really fucked up, and the "girl" to the lower left picture looks pretty much /beg/ tier, what's with this horribly distorted fugly face. I swear, I saw some better drawings at /beg/ over the last month. Not even the values are good in these two portraits. And the guy with a hueg nose next to her doesn't look human too (dem eyes), but maybe he wasn't even supposed to be...?

First of all, I like the face, it's very appealing.

As for the critique, I think there are some perspective issues mainly with the hips and the arm.

Comparing them to the upper body the twist seems to much to be possible, I suggest to tone that a bit down.

Looking at the arm I wasn't sure what body type you're going for. The arm looks buff but the rest of her doesn't really, so I just toned that down a bit too, but the main point about the arm is the shape of the lower arm and the direction it seems to be going. Due to the way the joint area is overlapping it looks like it's coming towards us, but that feels strained and unnatural. As well the hand, it would look more natural if it wasn't turned towards the viewer.

Is that a hand next her face behind the ball thing?

Last thing would be the raised foot, it also feels unnatural, my suggestion is to put it down, but you can do something else as long as it doesn't feel stiff.
>>
>>2990270
>that unecessary hair on the eye
blog?
>>
>>2990314
Good points.I kind of unintentionally mixed different body types together.
There's a hand on the ball thing, but I thought it was a prop or something. As if she were a which who wore severed arms, ya know? Turns out in the reference it was her actual hand. I had to remove that completely.
And you're right, the popped leg does feel strange.
Thanks for the crit, anon

Why do people insist on screwing around like this? That ass is disgusting, like a peach that was left under a tire, and her torso is just too small for every single part of her body. The guy in the photo isn't pointing his feet out as far as the girl is. I won't say the drawing is flat out wrong, but it introduces an awkwardness to the figure that outweighs the benefits.

Reorient the feet, and you won't have this problem at all.

I'm having a lot of trouble finding my own style.
There are a few artist that I really like, but I don't want to be a fag and just copy them. I mean, it would be embarrassing because people would know me for being a crappy, half fast version of somebody else.

I'm having a hard time drawing in general.

I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.
>>
>>2990900
Just copy your favorite artists and eventually you will absorb your favorite parts of their work and that superposition of multiple artists becomes your style.

Also, doing "studies" and copies helps to get your pen down on paper which is more important for logging lots of mileage.

Eventually, when you want to draw your own original content, the choice of content that you draw becomes part of your style, and that is independent of the techniques you picked up from copying other artists' work

Since there's exactly no difference
>>
>>2991242
Why would the feet necessarily be on the same line? The left foot ought to be closer to the viewer than the right foot in this view and stance.

Why would you need to draw an entire grid for just one line?

The grid itself is misaligned, and the divisions do not look like squares.

Hello people of 4chan I made a thread about what I'm about to say but not sure if I needed a thread I'm new to this site I hope that doesn't bother to many people here. So I was wondering if my work would fit at comic conventions in artist alley. I have been looking into selling my prints there but not sure if it will fit mostly because it's a comic convention. Please let me know your honest opinion I don't mind tough criticism I said that in my thread to lol but really I don't mind.
>>
>>2992174
First of, thank you for moving to one of the generals with your question. Not everyone is willing to amend their mistake when they make a new thread.

Second, no i don't think your work would fit in at artists alley. It's mostly cute art and character drawings. You could possibly still make small postcards with art samples on them and pass them out though to get people to check out your work and maybe get new followers but your work doesn't have that generic mass appeal quality that find success in animu cons.

I think your work needs some finesse before you can really sell it though.

Its not harder than realism, it is just harder to learn anything from it if you are a complete beginner. If you don't understand form to begin with.
>>
>>2992440
you know I just woke up again and realized you were probably asking if I had any tutorials or something, not if I was using any resources while I drew lmao

in that case, uhhh I have a patreon where I release psds but that's about it as far as "learning material" goes

p-pls no bully, it's just that i don't know wtf is happening on that webm and though it answered why cgi anime sucks even with today's computers. I suppose it's just a case of not trying at all it seems. Also, being inflamatory is the best way to get fast answers over here.

just some very small edits:
- played with levels (maybe overdid this) and colour balance (less yellow, more hues)
- zoomed out a little, to get rid of the tangent of her crystal hair things, balance composition more
- exaggerated her face just a little
- made her blush a little less murky, more airbrush
- added some debris flying towards camera in foreground, more depth
- changed some of the stuff around the top borders to better frame
- small edits to explosions to intensify them

...Yeah, that's pretty much the opposite of what I asked.
I'd rather get a redline based on the assumption that only the eyes are meant to be heavily stylized. To be honest, I have less and less idea what could be wrong with the face the more I squint, or flip the image, or rotate, or modify it. REeEEEEEEEeeEEEEeee...!!
>>
>>2993382
what >>2993202 posted still applies.

use a reference, actually LOOK at the reference
you say only the eyes are meant to be heavily stylised but in what reality do humans have no lips and voldemort noses.
also: you focus too much on detail, why draw individual eyelashes when you haven't gotten the basic eye shape right,
why spend time detailing the ear when neither the shape nor position are right.
I think you should work on correcting these mistakes in the sketch/lineart stage, before moving onto colouring, airbrushing, detailing.

>REeEEEEEEEeeEEEEeee...!!
my first instinct is to say fuck off, but seriously, are you 12?
>>
can someone recommend some good guides on cel shading?
>>
>>2993390
I really wish someone said all of this at the time I posted the lineart.
What's with the eye shape though? Is it 3D issues related to rotation, or is it a bad attempt to show squinting that goes with a smile?

>> voldemort noses
You're the second person to say that, so it might really look like that to some, but why? I see a much more defined nose and the nostrils are horizontal, like they should be in normal human noses... I myself can't see any similarities. Is my low-contrast shading to blame?

Your saying that she lacks lips is less baffling, although I spent quite some time rendering them. It's true that I dislike defined lips since I absolutely hate makeup and associate defined lips with it. So I usually model them after my own, which are just a bit darker than my basic skin color. Even so, I did notice the positive change in readability after increasing the contrast.

>> my first instinct is to say fuck off, but seriously, are you 12?
A dozen years older, actually. Please don't mind my embarrassing attempt to be trendy and hip.
