If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

The pose is kinda stiff, and you need to be more conscious of le hands. Aisde from that, very nice.

>>2984590
Don't post from your phone. If you've been drawing seriously for a year and you still remain on this level... well, you might have some potential, but you certainly don't have any innate talent and you certainly won't learn quickly (if you didn't just doodle mindlessly but were grinding your fundies in accordance to the right textbooks).
>>
>>2984601
i doodled mindlessly, learning from my mistakes
>>
>>2984601
Thanks anon! Not sure how to fix the stiff pose, but I'll keep working on them and hands also.
>>
>>2984604
Ok then, here's the list of what you need to fix first:
1) Chicken scratching.
2) Facial/head anatomy.
3) Body anatomy, mostly symmetry, proportions, and joints. Use a mirror to detect your mistakes while it's not too late.

>>2984611
IMO, you need to change the posture: move the pelvis forward and position her left leg (the closer one) some other way. Turn the foot so that it almost faces the viewer, but not quite. A bit of a hack, although my observation data is insufficient: standing on tiptoes can add a great deal of dynamism to the character.
>>
I hope this is the right thread - can someone tell me clearly how to draw from the shoulder? I'm going through the drawabox lessons, and searching through his subreddit, but it seems nobody can actually explain or show the motion despite being very insistent that people do it.

Assuming you were always drawing from the wrist...
1) Hold your drawing utensil as you would normally.
2) Put your hand on the canvas.
3) While keeping the pen on the canvas, raise the wrist from it so that your forearm is parallel to the canvas if it's horizontal
4) Doodle while consciously not lowering the wrist. The forearm with your hand must stay fixed. You only move your shoulder.

There, you're drawing from your shoulder.
To get used to it, consciously draw everything from the shoulder for about a week.

>>2984620

>>

>>
>>2984628
What you're looking at is pure energy. A lot of good artists have their own workflow involving character drawing and some of them just lose themselves in the initial stages and put whatever line down. Obviously since they've made it (or at least are better than the /ic/ average) they can get away with it and it works as you can see the "final" lines that describe the form like around the legs and such.
>>
>>2984629

There's a scribbly method of gesture drawing but the scribbles are used to add volume to the gesture.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nT03ZQwYM4

Maybe try practicing this. Might feel natural for you.
>>
>>2984646
Yeah, I'm just exaggerating to make my point clear.

>>2984649
I personally find drawing straight horizontal lines hard. Diagonal? No problem. Vertical lines? A little bit more difficult, but ok too. Horizontal? Why... these... fuckers... keep... curving, dammit!
(The actual reason is that my tablet is positioned badly, but I don't have much space on my table anyway, and my apartments would require throwing out some of the furniture to make place for a bigger table.)

Lol, no.
Well, chicken scratching is easier than drawing cleanly and confidently, that's for sure.
>>
>>2984672
none.

however, animators use small well placed lines in their sketches so that the frames perfectly overlay. this may resemble chicken scratch

another thing beginners tend to mistake for chicken scratch are trying out lines in your sketch to find the right one. finding lines loom scribbly but are not short and uncertain, they still follow the flow. those are aldo sometimes mistaken for chickensratch

Oh, and yes, you fixed the pelvis, or so it seems. It might need some rework if we are to rotate the leg. Remember that a buttock is a part of a leg and rotates along with it.
>>
sometimes i draw better when i dont use boxes and cylinders to build something? is this bad or good? what does it mean for the way i practice and the way i draw?
>>
>>2984601
Wait, I would still like to know how much potential I have. I do not want to waste time and energy on something if I cannot master it. I have not been drawing seriously at all, it has been merely a hobby. I would draw maybe once or twice a week and I rarely finish my drawings (maybe 40% I complete, I usually stop after an unfixable mistake). Also, should I look at those Loomis books before I take an intro art class in the fall, or should I just continue as is and wait to be taught in class?
>>
It's not chicken scratching if you're just blocking out the lines, right? I was taught to draft in a really light medium like an then put the final smooth linework in with a softer pencil lead
>>
>>2984699
>It might need some rework if we are to rotate the leg. Remember that a buttock is a part of a leg and rotates along with it.

I see it now. I think that can be done. I'll just have to redraw the leg front facing and the butt further from view. I will work on those edits. Thanks for the helpful feedback.

The funny thing is, those two could actually be called the best ones out of them. Everything else is royally fucked up regardles of whether you tried to draw animoo anatomy or gone realistic. Most visible with the placement of ears. Advice depends on what you want to achieve, but anyway, what I wrote for >>2984914 applies to you too.

The position of your girl's right (far) arm is dubious, albeit possible. Also, is her upper torso rotated off-axis intentionally? If yes, I think it's ok. If not... yeah, you might guess my thoughts. I'm not sure if her pelvis and hips are separated properly too, and the shape of her legs is dubious.

Anyway, given that female hair has considerable volume, this one is a lot better than those heads, maybe due to the smaller size. I find it easier to draw faces and heads small, too. You can use this for reference:

Those surely look like male hands.
The nails are uneven and don't look clean enough, that's why.

>>2985677
Tell me what specifically you do not understand. It is quite clear to me:
1) Any line goes towards some vanishing point in perspective, straight or not. You can treat a line that is not straight (but fairly symmetrical as a parallelogram formed by its function... wait, I don't think that is a better explanation).
2) All vanishing points lie on the eye level of the viewer, i. e. the horizon.
3) Rotation of an object that has its sides/edges pointing towards different vanishing points will result in a corresponding shift of these vanishing points along the horizon.
4) If you attempt to bring the vanishing points of the lines forming a 3D cube together, you will inevitably reduce it to a single plane (or rather, a single flat line in the viewer's eyes).

>>2985678
The point of additional exercises is to help you cope with the effects of bad posture on your spine. Stand up from time to time and do them. Or go lie on an orthopedic mattress, they're pretty cheap compared to their usefulness.

Her ear region seems pretty strange, I can't figure out what's going on there. And with that head position she would have to hunch her back more. Either move the head up or redo the upper spine.
Although clothing folds seem weird to me, I can't help you the slightest bit here; however, you need to remove that shield and thigh tangent. I also recommend you to lower the thickness of far leg lines and adding it t her arm. I. e. work on your line weight.

>>2985759
Did you draw this from imagination? If yes, you know what? You might have a talent for painting landscapes. Humans might be simply not your thing.
For appeal, hm... I think the center of attention, which is the tree, needs more contrast, as it blends with the background too much. Colors might fix this problem. Incidentally, did you ever try coloring your pictures?

That's all there is at the moment other than a boring horizon line (which is too high). (I have a bad habit of posting my posts without finishing the thought.)
If we interpret what is probably intended to be the coast as the horizon line, the water as the sky, the red bush as the tree, and that violet thing in the center as some kind of creature, it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting. I've seen this approach (making small things seem big) described in an article about a certain art museum that I translated about three weeks ago.

It's no so much a benefit, as it's a way of finding the form without constantly erasing. Some people call it sculpting with pencil, chipping away at the form. It's not good in a final rendering, but in the construction stage, there's nothing wrong with it.

Not everyone creates a perfect drawing first time out, they'll do a series of studies, THEN do a final with clean lines and such. A lot of posters here believe or inaccurately think that every drawing is final, every pencil stroke is final, and perfection achieved by anyone. Even the masters doodles and sketched quickly doing studies.

That's a little better. In terms of character design, think about how the character treats the eye. Maybe her hairstyle is tied up or not one with bangs so as not to conceal the vision. Maybe the eyebrows are positioned in a way that makes space for the eye. Also her normal eyes don't have much resemblance with the third one. Something like that maybe just to make it more integrated with the character.

I'm having troubles understanding chicken scratching. Am i suffering from it? I know it might sound retarded to not realize it by myself, but when i sketch i find myself with these super messy lines, although singularly picking i know that i tend to keep one line all the way instead of scratching it.

So, is this the result of too many restatings? Is this "just" lack of line precision or actual chicken scratch?
>>
>>2986170
draw in pen only for a while to clear this up. force your self to think of the line before you draw it and learn line economy. and yes you are.

Perhaps the only thing where you stayed true to the original is the eyebrow. Everything else looks so different that it is hard to call it a study. More like a drawing inspired by reference.

>>2986390
Who knows...
If all the angles are supposed to be straight and perspective rules are the same for all of these objects, then HELL NO.
If each of these objects has its own vanishing points, then maybe.
In any case, it doesn't look like something from real world and your ellipses really suck (poorly drawn and out of perspective).
>>
>>2986390
>>2986411

Ignore that dumb piece of shit. He's a sad little fuckwit cuck faggot who needs to be smashed in the head thirty or forty times with a golf club.

Regarding your ellipses. Go read about the major and minor axis of an ellipse. That will help you see why those are wrong.
>>
>>2986320
This is the part where I rake you incessantly for your puerile aspirations.

Truth is, I've never met anyone who mastered drawing women (non-chronophile) without going through a process not unlike those in the Sticky. If you really want to draw that subject matter from imagination with any modicum of skill (huehue...cum) then you're going to have to slug it just like the rest of us. Grind fundamentals.

What are the fundamentals? See Stick note. Now go forth my child, and weeb no more.

I'm sorry /beg/ I skipped out on 2 days of drawing I feel so shitty, I need to draw cute girls.

Also how the hell do I make my own loomis head. It always ends up fucked up if I don't copy his own ideas. I think I may be imaginatively lacking. So that leads me to conclude I may need a lot more than usual before I get where I want to be.

>>
>>2986429
I have seen that video already and yes I'm working on making realistic heads. But after exploring fun with a pencil I've stumbled in a situation where I get practically stumped and I end up with shit cartoonish loomis-style heads.

>>2986434
that's the thing anon if I am stuck at this point then I'm sure it carries over when I am making cute girls. And it's not like I'm lacking exposure to cute girls. Maybe it's just indecisiveness?

>>2986431

>>
>>2986442
Loomis head experience don't carry over unless you want to draw funky cartoon heads. What kind of cute girls are you talking about? If they're really different from the Loomis heads then use Loomis's other book about head and hands. Learn the basic construction and proportions and skip to the female head section. Read the plates there and you can semi-draw cute girls at that point. It still takes experience so don't give up so easily.

Wow, you poured time into proving that his freehand two-point perspective isn't perfect.

That proves absolutely nothing, other than the fact that you swallowed the bait whole.

Other than that, it's pedantic as fuck. The shapes prove well enough that he understands where the points go and why.

The circles, however, lack basic understanding. They are missing a key point of basic, fundamental understanding. That is the minor axis. The ellipses anon drew can not be folded along the minor axis in perspective. It is likely that he doesn't know about this yet.

Therefore pointing it out is helpful, and not simply being a pedantic fuck seeking to prove how much better and/or smarter you are.

I am a simple fish. I see a nice bait, I swallow.

He might understand the rules of perspective, but it is nonetheless true that each of his boxes is located in its own dimension. Also, if that is freehand... well, fuck me. I wish I could draw straight lines like that freehand.

>>2986460
So that means you knew how much you fucked up those floating above?

Any good exercises for inking? I can lay down smooth pencil lines and curves, but when I try to ink over them it just gets all shaky and non-confident looking.
>>
>>2986467
You got a Pinterest? Look up the anime tutorials, there's really good ones on there and use them. Always draw cute girls too, even if it's bad. Do it better the next time. Stylization is different from realism, and also a little bit easier because it's simpler in detail and you're used to it. Look at your favorite artists and see how they draw faces and try to incorporate those same shapes into your own work.
>>
>>2986492
oh yes I do, what's a good tag other than "anime tutorials"? It comes up with plenty but I am curious if there is a better one.

Here, I drew Tifa from FF7. Used the upside-down trick when drawing from the reference, like in the famous Picasso exercise. Once I had the outline, I flipped it over right side up. It looked ok, for the low expectations I had considering my skill level. I went on to shade it and touch up little details. 4 hours spent total. I'm disappointed with it, and as a beginner novice I'm thinking maybe I'm being too ambitious. I'm not sure if drawing this actually helped me improve at all, I think it would technically be best to do those tedious drawabox exercises.

Tell me what you think
no bully pls
