>>
>>2974557

Very Nausicäa. I like it. Any tips for getting that sort of "softer" and "rugged" line, in particular the way you've drawn the backpack? I draw similar stuff (or I'd like to) but mine looks way harder and straighter, which isn't as cool.
>>
>>2974654
I guess the thing is to be a little more loose and less restrained with your line but still maintain a sense of form by doing a more rigid underdrawing. Learning where a line can be hesitant and where it can be full I think is the key thing which i'm still trying to understand myself.
>>
>>2974427
i don't actually think i would look at better, i kinda like it :^V
>>
>>2974666

So I should keep my sketch streamlined and then "soften it up" as I add on an "inking" layer? I guess that makes sense. (Sorry, I don't really know the terms well, only started making digital stuff a week or two ago). My sketches tend to be tentative as fuck which is something I also need to work on. I got past the "scribbley" stage at least.
>>
>>2974672
I think basically draw out a sketch behind and then put the inking layer on top. Turn that layer on and off to check that what you're doing is actually relevant to the piece and not visual noise.
>>
>>2974692

Thanks my nigga, I'll try it out!

>>

You must be pretty new, because I don't think you meant to reply to my post. Anyways, learn some basic construction and try doing quick sketches of various mannikin poses.
>>
>>2975789
>>2975799
Whats wrong with the construction?
>>
>>2975810
Well, if you have an understanding of construction it should be easier to draw a variety of poses
>>
>>2975813
See when ya said learn, I thought you were saying I didn't know it. I do know it.

I need a way to draw a person that's dynamic. So I won't do the same boring standing pose. I need IDEAS. And drawing models is fun and all but a normal person wouldn't just jump into the air on a rope like in a reference pic I drew before

>>
>>2975789
It sounds like you're having trouble coming up with ideas for what you consider 'dynamic' poses.
The easiest thing to do is to just keep an eye out for them; pay attention to how people move, stretch, walk, run, etc. It helps to keep a reference folder on hand. Even artists who work traditionally tend to keep a lot of visual materials on hand to help them get ideas for what to draw. As you build your visual library, over time it will be easier and easier to draw a dynamic pose completely from your brain, which seems like that's what you really want to achieve.
Until then, though, why not just head over to posemaniacs or some other figure draw website and start studying that way?

IDEAS
You are telling me to study to get ideas.
You are telling me to get better at art to have better ideas.
You are giving convoluted plans for getting ideas.

Gesture studies, especially things like posemaniacs, aren't helpful. I'm already doing those things. They are too keen on natural standing poses either.

>>2976956
this is a natural standing pose that isn't just straight up with arms to the side. Literally anything other than straight up with arms to the side would be an idea. So the next time so one asks for ideas maybe give them an idea. Or a good reference to get ideas from

Decided today was going to be a painting day.

Picked a drawing I liked, converted it to blueline in Photoshop and printed it onto smooth bristol at the approximate size of the original art. Re-inked it with a G pen (the exact same that was used to draw it), then started coloring with Dr Martins paints.

Even though this has been a fun challenge, now more than ever am I convinced to invest in a set of markers. Having to wait for sections and layers to dry, and avoid smears (you can see a big one on his left hand), and make sure you're not working too wet or too dry, is a pain in the ass. It's fussy, it's difficult and it takes ffffoorreeevvveeerrr

I'm going to finish this piece and I do like the look of the parts I didn't fuck up (the scan doesn't look anywhere near as good as the original) but I'm officially sold on markers.

Stick with paint, markers are insanely expensive and not at all smooth.
>>
>>2978626
>markers are insanely expensive

Not really, and the savings in time offset the additional expense.

>not at all smooth.

This just isn't true. I have a set of grey Copics and they're very smooth.
>>
They run out too quickly, and are like 5-10+ dollars each, thats way too expensive. Its just a scam for nerds that like japan and anime. Also the alchohol evaporates too quickly. Youd be better off with gouache.
>>
>>2978649
>They run out too quickly

They really don't and refills are dirt cheap, they work out to something like 50 cents a refill.

>and are like 5-10+ dollars each, thats way too expensive

They're $5 each which is very reasonable for a tool that you can use for the rest of your life. Paint is cheap but it's way more time consuming. The productivity of markers pays for itself.

>Also the alchohol evaporates too quickly

That's a feature, not a flaw.

>Its just a scam for nerds that like japan and anime

And anyone who wants to work in color without having to mess with brushes, water, rippling paper, seeping, mixing, drying, etc.

>Youd be better off with gouache.

Except gouache is opaque which would be even more of a hassle for this kind of thing.
>>
>>2978630

Sorry, by smooth I mean you cant cover large areas quickly or blend a perfect color or work the medium at all. Yes, you can make 1 smooth line at a time, but as soon as you start covering large areas the tip will dry out. Theyre pointless.
>>
>>2978659

I really don't think you've actually used them, that hasn't been my experience with them at all.
>>
>>2978657

Where do you get refills? Ive never seen that.

Markers have their place and usefullness, i personally think theyre a waste of money. If its really that cheap then fuck it, ivs got like 50 copics that are all out, i could use this refill info

Paint is still undeniably the best medium for color, though not well suited to the impatient and the lazy.
>>
>>2978714

Best by what metric? Cost effectiveness? Then yeah, it is.
>>
>>2978716
A bunch of metrics, but color alone is enough imo.

10 or so tubes of paint can create a greater range of color and surface effects than 1000 different hues and tones of copics.
>>
>>2978741
So yeah cost effectiveness but also control and vibrancy and lifespan.
>>
>>2978602

Good points, but two things to add:

1) The refill ink for Copics can be used as paint. So if you need to fill a larger area or want more traditional effects you can do it if you have refill ink on hand.

2) The convenience of markers offsets pretty much all of that IMO. Even though with a lot of hard work, skill and time you can create amazing results with traditional watercolors, markers are way easier to work with. For fine art I give the edge to watercolors, but for illustration marker is the better option.

I'm assuming this is the same exercise you did with the goku drawing, re-inking a Toriyama panel?
Good practice if so, though there are some line weight issues that you should work on. (I don't have the original panel on hand to compare, mind you)
The biggest issue that jumped out are the lines for his arms being thinner than the lines for the clothing. You need to bulk up the outlines of his arms in line thickness, otherwise it gets a bit hard to read.
A general rule of thumb, Toriyama generally did the background lines thinner than the character lines (On average of course, he pumped these pages out so fast that it varies). The thinnest lines on the characters tended to be the little fluff/details, the lines on his cheeks under his eyes, certain clothing folds, hatching etc.

Thanks for the critique.

Getting thicker lines is the thing that really tests my nerve, because the pen can easily shit out a big blob of ink.

Here is the original panel. I think I did a better job with it than I did with the Goku one but I just now noticed a huge inaccuracy (the outer edge of his bicep) that I fucked up somehow.
>>
>>2978912

I would recommend toning your entire background and saving your pure colors for the subject. Itll help the character jump out a bit and is less distracting to the eye.
>>
>>2978921

That's the plan. I want the overall piece to be less intense than the first one so I'm going to go for much softer colors in the background. I'm actually kinda kicking myself for inking the clouds, I should have just left the blueline for those and created more contrast with the figure. Maybe I'll convert those lines to color holds once I scan it.

I'm doin finished modelling the skin and now I've laid down some orange dye for his clothes which I'm just waiting for to dry. If it's not 100% dry I can't get sharp edges when I add shading on top of it. This is where markers have a definite edge, although I doubt marker would look as gorgeous as this dye. My blue-lines are seeping out from under the inks though which is really annoying me, I'm going to have to correct all that digitally.
>>
>>2978912
You got quite close, great job there. I'm a big fan of Toriyama myself, it's always interesting to consider how quickly this drawing was likely done. His line weight was a bit all over the place as well, but it seems he makes it work with the spot blacks of the sash/shirt/armbands/boots.
Either way, keep it up, I assume you're doing personal pieces too, after doing these?

>>
>>2978959
>it's always interesting to consider how quickly this drawing was likely done

No kidding. It's very likely that the entire thing, pencils and inks, was done inside of an hour. And it's just one panel on a page.

>I assume you're doing personal pieces too, after doing these?

Oh yeah. The purpose of me doing this is to get familiar with the tools, which is easier to do with a solid drawing, and to get me feeling good about art and motivated to improve. Once I finish Gohan I'll get back to studying.

Haven't drawn properly in over a year, someone point things out for me before I continue besides the hands.
>>
>>2978748
hey man, this is lookin pretty good. i am diggin your more painterly style with the colouring, i definitely think you should play around with that more. you clearly know from study how to light things and how fabric works, i think now you just have to design your shadow shapes more.

it shows that you do a lot of studies, but maybe not as many imaginative drawings like this! there is some noticeable stylistic disparity going on here, especially obvious when comparing the face and the arm, that i feel could be cleared up by just picking a direction you want to go in. i would guess that you're more interested in drawing anime girls than you are anatomical figures, so you should make an effort to get the rest of the body to match the face stylistically.

it's good that you know the anatomy of the arm (although the extensors would overlap the bicep here, not the other way around), but we don't need to see the styloid process or all her knuckles in a drawing like this. keep it simple and appealing! the sudden increase in detail on the hands in comparison to the face or the shirt really draws the eye to it, too. no need to make things more complicated than they have to be.

the stylistic disparity is a pretty common thing, i think, just by virtue of what most people practice or focus on. the anime face is a simple thing to study, it's very obvious in how it's stylized and easy to copy, but no one looks at anime knees or elbows so when it comes time to draw them we just fall back on our studies. draw your body parts like you draw your heads!

also i feel like the overall image could maybe use a lil more oomph, so i did so doodles of some alternate comps that might help for your next drawing? maybe try moving the camera a bit to add a lil character to it. i dunno. hope this helps! design with intention!

You cant just do a super thin layer of white + cyan + tiniest amount of black?

The clouds too can be toned and need a shadow on the right side in line with your light direction. This would help define the left arm and bring out the skin tones.

>>2979275
There are multiple kinds of contrast, hue is one, value is another, but the contrast im referring too is between pure colors (color + white) and tones (color + white black). Its like impressionism (tone contrasts color) vs neo-imlressionism (mathematic cobtrast of only hues). Compare delacroix to seurat/signac.

How to stop constructing for sake of construction and start drawing? Like picrelated. What is the secret behind this? How to draw without constructing every little detail and turning figures into anatomical mannequin? Spark?
>>
>>2980056

>>
>>2980056

Do so much construction that you internalize it and it becomes instinct.
>>
>>2980069

>>
>>2980056
just don't use construction. If you've constructed things for a bit you have a general idea where things go and come from. Art doesn't need to be perfect, you can break up the anatomy if it helps the gesture and gives the image energy.
Its better to get it correct, but just going with it and working off forms as opposed to predefined constructs will give your drawings a lot more energy even if your anatomy and proportions will suffer for a little bit.
>>

bad habits are a meme, you'll get better at more things by just drawing than you'll get worse.
just keep in mind that by drawing and actually working on making it look better you will progress. as long as you're looking at things to fix you'll improve.
>>
>>2980147
I didn't mean to stop with fundamentals, but stop caring about being perfect and trying to get the same results as your mind's vision, because that's not going to happen.

At least I feel I could really start to progress better after I started simply drawing stuff rather than "grinding". I expect my drawings to be bad from the start so any kind of comparatively good result can make me happy and motivate me.

When people mean same face, it means make the face different with expressions, in addition to maybe changing the way you do features. Draw some creepy 3DPD smirks into your anime faces as practice.

Trying something with detail. (Initial roughing.)

Once I get to the motorcycle and coloring, what could I do for the huge amount of detail?

Should I try to make the hidden leg and back half of the motorcycle muted/blurred/faded/whatever you want to call that technique where less detail is present with rear objects? (I guess a paint/watercolor version of depth of field.)

I'm no expert, so just a suggestion for the pose!
Make sure to use references to see how people naturally sit on motorbikes.
This way you'll pick up on details like how females tend to sit closer towards the front.
It also looked like you were using a Clip Studio Paint model, which probably lent to the stiffness of the pose.
One suggestion I would make is to fiddle around with the proportions of the 3d model; the proportions of the standard model seem to have been a little too realistic for the style you were trying to use, making the face and head-body ratio look a bit odd.

Pink + Grey doesn't really work for me. Just keep to the pink or grey alone. Screentones help to make comics look sharper and easier to read, but what you're doing with the blurred areas everywhere is making everything worse. If you're making a comic, instead of wasting time giving every panel or page 2 colours for shading, use the time to clean up your lines and use mostly flat screentones(I go with 50%,30%,20%,10% greys) with subtle gradients. Saves time and it'll be nicer.
>>
>>2981180
I'll try that, thanks. And you're spot on. I did adjust the proportions a bit, but guess they weren't as well set as they should've been.

>>
>>2981491
This sort of proves the other anon's point, you can't see the difference? I'm assuming the square you added is your hair. The other artist's drawing has hints of blue on the shadows and hints of yellow for the highlights, whereas yours is just straight green all the way through. It looks like you just lowered the brightness slider for your darks, which really flattens it out and makes it look like grass.
>>
>>2981495
I think their (and mine) point was in the thickness of individual hair strands though...
Yeah, I learned later that my hair lacks contrast. Apart from that, it looks like we both used the same process, but this guy uses a wider range of hues. Thanks for pointing it out, I learned something that I didn't realize even now. Indeed, there's no reason to use a wide range of skin tones / hues but restrain yourself to just a couple of hue values.

not either of those anons, but after figuring out what you guys were back-forthing about, I'll agree that the way individual strands have been drawn in >>2981199 is probably the weakest part of the piece. I can tell what you're going for and that the detail is a stylistic choice, but the way you've done it makes it seem scribbly, flat and an odd texture compared to the rest of the image.
As always though, I really like how soft you can make flesh look.
