If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Am I doing this study thing correctly? Are the bottom 3 drawings (AirDuster head, Lady, and muscle torso) the proper way to study 3d forms?
>>
>>2910353
No, youre too focused with looking texhnical than actually applying the techniques. That skull is abhorrent. Make things out of shapes, be cleaner.

It doesn't really look like you studied anything. You just did a bunch of quick doodles of random things.

Studying is very practical. Your training yourself to understand one subject. So there shouldn't be sporadic doodles of different things. You don't learn anything from doing that.

Pick one thing that you want to learn how to draw then analyze it.

If you want to draw faces, you analyze the skull. Draw it multiple times facing different directions. Learn the proportions and the planes. Afterwards, you draw a head with all the features multiple times, rotated in different ways.

Right now, I'd say go study form and lighting. Draw basic shapes like cubes, cylinders, cones in different angles under different lighting conditions. Study how light affects and wraps around the form. Study how shadows appear.

It's easiest to study native american or asian faces because their cheekbones are quite prominent. It's a curve in from the bottom of the eye to the nostril.

>tfw all the anime from my teen years is haunting me
This is my first stab at digital painting and it's kicking my ass. I'm in the process of sort of revising the values because I'm a pussy about very dark/light values and contrast is scary. Yell at me about things.
>>
>>2910458
If that's literally your first time doing digital then you are doing a great job. There's lots of nitpicks but since you are new to digital the best advice is to just keep painting basically, you'll figure things out on your own pretty quickly.
>>
>>2910458
my advice would be to make sure things actually have forms instead of being a blob of tones

for example, the socket of the eye, the chin, the protrusion of the bridge of the nose etc

placements of everything looks fine and the softness is good, maybe draw western men to really begin to understanding drawing facial features since girls and asian faces are just a giant blob with facial features on top

>>2910482
Thanks, I get what you mean about the blobiness. Even with a neutral expression and a pretty soft face I still fucked up the likeness quite a bit so I think I need to really push myself to observe more to get a better feel for the form of the head anyway.

Do several quicker drawings instead of one long one. Chances are you will get at least one that looks like them. Also people like seeing themselves from multiple angles and will be happy you did lots of drawings. You can also explain that likeness is difficult to get even for experienced artists.

>I feel chicken scratching has become a bad habit, anybody know the best way to fix it?
They don't look that chicken scratchy to me. Maybe the line quality is meh, but it looks okay. You're allowed to go over a line more than once you know. Just take care in how you put it down and if you are going over it again it should be to reinforce it, not because you are guessing or something.

As for exercises to improve linework, I guess things like contour drawing, drawing with the whole arm, and slowing down will help. You can also "ghost" a line by practicing once or twice the motion but have your pencil tip hovering over the paper slightly so it makes no mark. Then when you have the motion down you can do it for real.

Alright, first step is learning to you your materials,
You need to be drawing with pencils
>but i want to draw comics in ink
No, you need to use pencils.

You obviously also have no confidence, this comes with experience so stop rushing ahead trying to shade and color.
Draw basic forms like cubes and spheres in different perspectives and with different lighting. Google is your friend, if you have any questions GOOGLE THEM.

You're still stuck in 2D aka advanced symbol drawing, all complex forms are made out of simple forms, so learn how to draw simple forms.

APPLY WHAT YOU LEARN.
One of the most important steps. Make a drawing out of what you just studied. Have FUN with it, ENJOY your new knowledge. You will probably have to erase a lot at this point, your drawings will not look "right". That's fine, keep working at it until you fix the issue, this will probably involve getting lucky buts thats nothing to feel bad about. If something is fucked up beyond repair, start completely over

I was at your level once so please believe i have experience with this frustrating period of development.

Force yourself to do one stroke only, with your shoulder. Really force yourself, insist till it becomes an habit. But like the others have pointed out, It's pretty good. I don't know what's going on with the right back leg though, it seems to be crossing through the ground?
>>
>>2910842
>>2883801
Based on this person's blog, it's being taught more often. That's one reason.
Another reason could be that entertainment has lead people to notice concept artists which are generally the ones who use said method or recommend it.

If you go down his blog, you may find the answer.

Draw-through method is present as well as other essential things to learn from an art school.
Useful to use as a reference, so do take a look if you haven't.

Using the wrist for small details is usually fine as long as you're keeping your strokes clean because you don't need the range of motion you get with working from the shoulder

How the everloving FUCK does Gesture Drawing work?
>It helps guide your eyes through the motions of the body
Okay, great. I need that, my poses are stiff as fuck and my anatomy is all over the place. How do I do this?
>Just scribble nothing on a page for 2 hours every day and you'll magically gitgud lolbye
This doesn't help explain anything.

Seriously, no youtube or written tutorial has ever helped me understand just what the fuck I'm doing right or wrong. Every time I try to do this shit I just get myself pissed off after 10 minutes because all I've done is just scribbled a complete nothing piece of shit that doesn't even RESEMBLE a human body. Just a bunch of circles and lines on a page. I understand that this is supposed to be "quick 30 second drawings that are for capturing motion" and not something you spend an hour perfecting, but I. Don't. Get. It. I feel like I legitimately captured the human form better when I was 5, and all my people were circles on beans with 4 lines for arms and legs.

I just don't get it, man. As an artist I feel like I'd be well off if I could put everything I know together cohesively, consistently, and quickly. Right now my quality is like a rollercoaster with huge dips whenever I spend less than 10 hours on a single drawing, which is what gesture drawing is supposed to fix. This is something I feel like I need to know in order to hit any of my goals, but I just don't get it. I feel like with my normal drawings I'm -okay-. I'm still piss poor gutter trash in the grand scheme of things, but I'm at least past the chicken scratch anime stick figures phase so at least I'm starting to see my progress. What is the "secret" for picking the right saturation on the darker areas?
I have some theoretical knowledge about it, mostly from either books, or tutorials, i'm not quite sure at this point.
I know that there is a transition between light and shadow, an area were the saturation (and darkness, i think) is higher. I also read somewhere that the shadows are supposed to be less saturated that the lighter areas (i'm not sure about this), yet, very often i see extremely good paints, where the darker areas seem to be sometimes more and sometimes less saturated, even to the point of being almost grey... can someone tell?
>>
A couple months back I decided I liked the idea of digital painting, character portraits in particular. After a bit of reading I've found myself following this drawabox site, what's bugging me is I haven't touched on any painting yet. I know I'm going to need at least some classical drawing skills, but how much? Are their any other resources I could follow that jump straight into the digital side of things? Or should I stick at this? I'm asking for a plan of what to study and in what order, so I can get into digital character portaits quicker basically. I know I shouldn't rush but it'd be good if I could skip parts that I won't need, I don't see myself branching off into other areas.

It depends a lot of the material and the lighting situation. A slightly shiny object or a light coloured one might pick up a lot of cool notes in the shadows if it outside and the blue sky is an influence, for example.

Skin is a weird one in that it's slightly translucent and there is all this blood and stuff beneath it. There's a lot of subsurface scattering that happens, which brings in warmth to the shadows.

As for the saturation level of things, I see people confused on this a lot. I think the problem behind it is that they are less saturated simply because of their value. If you were to graph the saturation of each colour you will find that it's a fairly bright value that allows the greatest purity. It is different for each colour, like yellow is most saturated at a very high value, blue is most saturated at a darker one.

So basically a colour with a dark value even at 100% saturation will be less saturated than that same hue at a higher value and 100% saturation.

I usually put the shadows fairly saturated in my images (going by the number in photoshop). Personally I find it looks a lot better this way, but you need the value to be correct first for it to work.

For the darkest occlusion shadow accents in a painting, you want it usually warm and saturated (even though it's like 95% black). It's a weird subtle thing and I don't really know the reason behind it but the colour will often look "dead" if it's not a bit warm in those spots.

Also theory is good and all, but ultimately experience and observation will trump it. Paint a lot from life and the masters and you will start to build an intuitive sense of what the colours should look like and what your taste is. Saturation and colour can be designed a lot depending on your intentions and tastes. Ultimately I think temperature is the most important component.

basically
temperature of the secondary light source + local color + reflected light + properties of the specific material (i.e subsurface scattering, veins etc)

skin in particular is difficult because it's a living organ that's interacting with light in a whole bunch of different ways at the same time
this is why painting a live model is so valuable. go to a drawing session there's one in your area. otherwise, try to paint people from life as much as possible. paint your friends, paint your parents, paint randos out on the street

schmid's book alla prima for the artist is very helpful on this subject, there's a pdf in the artbook thread

??????????? saturation in this context has no meaning. saturation is just the color having more color. why would you ever bring that up when color picking? you should only be painting with 3 colors to achieve any kind of realistic rendering. why the fuck would you want to autiscally pick everything? you know what it does? it fucking makes your drawing look muddy like the pic related you posted. holy fuck terrible shading. use a soft brush and learn edge control, jesus.

In my figure drawing class what we did was like a countdown warmup. First do a 5 min gesture, then 3 min, 1 min, 30 sec, the 10 sec. it helps loosen you up for the rest of what you're drawing, and the point of gesture is what you said, to capture movement. so basically draw a stick figure doing what the model is doing, then build up the stick figure. Gestures are supposed to be kind of chaotic and sketchy, so don't feel bad. It's all about quick, fairly confident lines to capture the moment. I have faith in you, anon

because gesture is supposed to be really quick, i like using a thick pencil so i can get a range of line weight. i start by drawing the head as a quick circle, then draw the contour of the spine, add sharp lines to place the shoulders and hips, then the extremities. i do everything super light at first then if i have time go back and start adding weight to the drawing like where shadows. charcoal is great to have nearby to use as your shading/weight 'tool', i just hate the charcoal fallout. i've used vine charcoal before and that's a fun tool to use for gestures. are you in college or have access to take some kind of figure class?
something that helped me was sitting at the mall and doing super quick gesture drawings of people walking around, standing, on their phones, etc

no amount of shading is gonna fix that mang. Really think you should restart, try something more simple as well. Familiarise yourself with basic perspective, like eye level and vanishing points.

It's really just a mess. Atleast try harder to make the lines straight, or use a ruler.

You did well this time, but allow me to point out something that probably makes the pictures look off.
1) Don't just trace the skull, people have a bit more meat on the lower parts of it.
2) The eyes of the first guy are a bit small, which makes the skull seem too wide. (If I make it narrower, it seems okay to me.) You also didn't draw the eyelashes.
3) The mouth and chin of the first guy are off-center.
4) The angle of the far cheek of the right guy is disturbing. Why don't you feed him properly?
5) The mouth of the right guy is too high up and his nose seems to be too short.

Know that finding flaws in your pictures was actually a bit difficult this time.

This is gonna sound kinda gay, but watch popular Let's Players, they always have super exaggerated crazy expressions to appeal to their audience and watch comedians like Jim Carey that rely on being visually zany to get a laugh, and just draw the expressions. Don't be hard on yourself at first if they look silly, keep plugging along. Another good thing to do is have a mirror near your work area, make silly faces in the mirror and draw them.

is it just me or is speed a large part of skill? in that it's almost a subset of skill? the more confident you are and the larger visual library you have the faster you'll put down lines, whereas meandering around about it almost always results in jaggy or weak lines. of course practice and actual study takes time but it seems like you really shouldn't spend a large amount of time on a piece.

You are not learning anatomy, one it's time to fill those tubes and circles and muscle it's going to be harder for you to understand the figure, but yes, using simple forms like in Anime books it's better.
>>
>>2912782
The hands are ok, more or less, but the lower left sheet is absolutely horrible. The two top left heads are ok as long as I can tell, but the right one doesn't look okay at all. The skeleton is that of a Star Wars droid; if you wanted to depict a human, bad luck then. The lower right sketch of what seems to be a bar wall with a guy sitting on the chair before it and a trash bin with bags nearby looks perhaps the best of them all. Now that I think about it, you seem to be comparatively stronger at landscapes and still life shots.

Chicken scratching, learn to make fewer, more confident strokes.

Don't draw every hair, makes it look like she has a bunch of black straw attached to her scalp. Try to draw larger massses, hair has volume.

Ear too low, follow the line of the eyes to place the ear.

Back of skull too small, look at a mirror. Learn head construction

Eyes are still symbols.

In two words: sticky, loomis

I'm going through keys, but I can't seem to get rid of the figure drawing when it comes to eyes and lips. Would looking into how to draw eyes and mouths tutorials help me or reinforce my symbol drawing?
>>
>>2912911
Symbol* not figure.
>>
>>2912911
Well you're not getting Keys right then, anon. Tutorials may help but what you need to do is read over the actual text of Keys, look for lines and angles and shapes and copy those and stop thinking in terms of "eyes' and "lips" at least for now.

Don't regard eyes and lips as any more special or more mysterious from apples and stools and potted plants and draw what you see as you see it, again reread keys or work through it again if you must.

Wait, you aren't the same person? Oy-vey.
Anyway, responding to the guy who draws heads digitally, the new ones look alright to me except the one in straight 3/4 (the third in the top row from the left). The nose of the head below it and the positions of its eyebrows look kinda off. Maybe you'd want to make your ears less angular too.
>>
>>2913028
What's wrong with the 3/4?

Need to learn how2ears anyway, thanks for the reminder
>>
>>2913065
I think it's the outlines of the head. Give the cheek more angle, make the skull rounder, and give more definition to the brow ridge. Touch your face lewdly, like it is your girl who's madly in love with you. Pinch ur meat, cope a feel, you know the deal. It would help you understand the fine details (forms) of a human head.
