I love that you signed it.

I mean, it's not much. It's so light on the paper that you can barely see it. It's mostly symbol drawing. The lines are scratchy and not very good. There's no value or shading. There's not much to say after that since it is really lacking in every way.

It doesn't look like you spent much time on it. Okay effort, but still a ways to go. Read the sticky, follow directions, and post the work you do from there.

I'm a total novice and I've been going through a few exercises from "keys to drawing" and "drawing on the right side of the brain", but I feel like it assumes the reader already has some, even just a little bit, of drawing experience or at least isn't a total retard like me.I need something that teaches the basest of the basics, like I am a 2 year old holding a pencil for the first time ever.
>>
>>2880539
There's no fucking secret dipshit. Just do the god damn work. Drawing on the right side of the brain is literally the starting point. Keys to drawing can be argued to be a bit more than just beginner, but they're all near the bottom. Just do the damn fucking thing and spend weeks, months on it. If not, then just give up. I'm saving you time that you can use on something more productive like programming.

Mhm, let me see if I can explain it.

This picture is kinda what I was going for.

Basically, you simplify body down to its most basic 3d shape. So the torso for example becomes a rectangular cube that bends and twists in the middle. Each side of that cube will have different shades based on where the light is hitting.

Once you get comfortable with 4 sides, you can add more sides for more shades. You can also add shapes to the torso, like the breasts will be spheres, arms will be cylinders or cubes. If the stomach is sticking out you can show that as a round shape on top of the torso cube.

Everything is kindof trial and error at that point. Just play around with it and you'll get it. I hope that helps.

The first thing you need to learn is stop using 5 or more lines to express what can be expressed by just one. The proportion of the amount of time you spend thinking where to put the lines and the time you spend actually drawing the lines should be like 5:1.

You have it flipped on its head. You make a line, it's wrong, you make another next to it, wrong again, repeat 5 times. You end up with a mess.

make one line and make it count. If you're not sure where it should be, make it extremely faint and use that to judge where the correct line should be compared to the faint line. The way you do it now, there are 5 different lines overlapping each other, all equal in thickness and opacity, and therefore in importance. You are saying 5 different things equally loud, but only one of them is correct. Make 1 line and make it count, erase the rest or don't make it i the first place.
>>
>>2880845
Much cleaner and accurately in perspective. Lineweight is still an issue though.

Rate my doggo.
>>
>>2880850
So basically use the least amount of lines?
>>
>>2880822
Looks like you hold your pencil too hard and go over your lines like 10 times each. That makes them look scratchy and causes your entire figure to look stiff. Work on lightening your grip and trying to get your lines on the first try. Ghost your lines, which means make the motion of drawing the line a few times before actually drawing it.

Aside from lines, your gestures are lacking rhythm and line of action which makes them look unbalanced and weightless. You can look both those up and find demos on youtube.

Lastly, you're focusing too much on drawing the outline of the figure which loses the gesture. Think of gestures as drawn from the inside out.

A good practice for you would be 30 second gestures to get you to loosen up. You won't have enough time to draw the outline then so all you can do is try to get a nice line of action to show the pose.
>>
>>2880853
That and more shoulder action.
>>
>>2880854
>>2880853
What would be a good example of "not drawing the outline"? Should I work more on structure?
>>

Yes, which basically amounts to 1 in all circumstances. You're allowed some faint lines for the purpose of judging whether they're correct and then making your actual line against them, but they should be barely visible so that they can be erased easily. This is important: take as much time as you need and resist the urge to make lines. Making useless lines gives you an illusion of progressing towards the completion of the drawing, but in fact leads you astray and wastes time. The fastest draftsmen and painters are the ones that think 5 times and draw once.

>>2880852
I took the lightest light from your doggo, the highlight on the eye, and put it next to the background. You see how dark it appears? You have wasted your delicious light on the background. Shoulda kept it for the important parts, like the highlight, which will make it shine against the darker rest of the painting. Also your doggo has no texture. Most of them have scaly skin full of bumps, not smooth.

>>2880859
You want to be able to show your gesture in just a few lines. Look at the picture. The stick figure on the left is already the gesture. It shows you exactly what the pose is. There is weight to the figure and the feet are planted. The outline then is drawn to flow with the lines of the stick figure.

Your gestures do have the stick figure pose in there, but your outlines work against the flow of those lines. Also you need more practice in getting that flow of the stick figure.

That's why I recommended doing 30 second gestures. So you can focus only on capturing the movement. Try to find the large sweeping line in each pose. Then when you get that down, you can draw the outline that flows with the gesture.

>>
>>2881099
Drawing from photographs is beneficial, but limited in how helpful it is, because you're studying a flat image, not 3D form.

Drawing from a live model is great because you cal look at the head from slightly different points of view therefore understanding the form better, but difficult for a beginner because of time constraints, model movement and added complexity of color and often shitty lighting prevalent in many life drawing classes.

Drawing plaster casts and sculptures/monuments from life is the best for beginners, because you're getting the best of both worlds. This is why XIXth century atelier students would draw and paint plaster casts for years before they were allowed to move onto color and live models.

Is drawing from references a good way to learn how to draw from imagination? Or do I need to practice doing that separately. Would my time be better spent just learning anatomy so I can construct bodies in any pose? At the moment kind of feels like I'm just tracing. I think I've figured it out somehow. Pic related is how I decided to go with it. Seems similar enough to the last anon so I think it's correct? Maybe?
>>
>>2881329
Unrelated to your question, sorry, but any particular reason you're doing these exercises digitally? I recently started drawabox drills too and while I initially thought I'd be doing everything on my tablet too, the guy seemed very adamant on using felt tip pens.
>>
>>2881406
I am the Anon who tried it too, I sincerely have no idea. It doesn't look wrong, so I supposed it's correct?
>>
>>2880344
damn son look at dem tiddies
>>
>>2881414
I wasn't really convinced by the guy's arguments: he explains you shouldn't use digital because drivers can be crap, which isn't my experience, but also because it "breeds impatience", which makes no sense to me since I take a lot of time with these exercises. I did the first lesson both traditionally and digitally but it ended up being annoying, so I only use digital now as that's my end goal anyway.

You should try and emulate the felt tip pen by setting your pen pressure sensitivity a bit higher though. Maybe unbind Ctrl+Z if you want. Don't use any complicated brushes, just some basic round line art brush.

>>2881418
I guess it's correct then. I'll do some more intersections later.
>>
>>2881433

Draw a box is pretty much ripped off Peter Han seminar on Dynamic sketching, or so it seems to me. Peter Han also insists that you use a felt tip pen, exactly the same brand even. The reason he gives is that you should use a pen that will not allow you to ''feather in'' and hide your mistakes, you can see where you fuck up very clearly and work on improving your linework/anything else you fuck up.
>>
>>2881436
That's accomplishable digitally by just resisting the urge to correct your mistakes despite having a plethora of easy ways out, isn't it? Seems just as beneficial in the long run in terms of learning to be careful with your lines.
>>
>>2881439
I suppose you're right, but I do plan on going to Museums so I can sketch so getting used to the felt tip pen it's going to be beneficial long term. That's the next step in Peter Han's seminar once you're good with forms.
>>
>>2881436
The first lesson should definitely be done with felt tip pen at first, I agree. As I progressively saw my wavy lines become straight, confident lines, I moved to digital and have just continued emulating the felt tip pen by using high pen pressure sensitivity, unbinding Ctrl+Z and using an extremely basic round brush. It's just much easier to manage for me since I can just ignore colour and the other brushes for now.

Wheres in the drawing of >>2881179 it looks as if her neck is bursting through the rings and even thicker than her head. Look at how little distance their is between the lowest point of the jaw and the neck.

It's obviously not wrong to draw a woman with a masculine neck, but I personally would draw more idealized proportions and in order to do that I would once again advice loomis.

>>
>>2881593
They stand on no ground for one. The ground is useful for beginners to think of. It's where weight goes. You should also begin studying how the body works with its anatomy. As well as see the planes of shadow and light. All of these will help your gestures as well as figures. Doing gestures alone though is a meme and useless.
>>
>>2881600

What else is there to look at? A disgusting buttery ass that reminds me of that Pepe meme or her lumpy saggy tits? The only beautiful thing there is the background, and I mean the environment.
>>
>>2881600
When i look at that picture my gaze is constantly sweeping between her tits, ass and face trying to figure out which is less abhorrent to look at.

If you can look at that weird tit of hers and be pleased or if you are able to ignore her butterface than you sure are a different kind of man than me.

>>
>>2881641

Yeah, me too. Let's get back to it brah. We gotta make it and the road ahead is a long one.
>>
>this thread
>>
>>2881640
While you should start with gesture first you should not expect to master gesture before you start learning anatomy. I don't think it's possible to master gesture without anatomy knowledge.
>>
>>2881640
Yeah just the basics. That takes one session of practice. Rest is to do anatomy like skeleton and anatomy. Also the best way to draw to learn how to draw figures is to draw them because the lines you make will tell you the right angles and how to make sure it's in the right perspective. Proportion control is in Loomis's book.
>>
>>2881593
Some of these are already looking better than your last batch. You're using longer fluid lines and less scratchy lines. Your grip is lighter. Keep it up.

Don't worry about the 30 sec gestures. That was just an exercise to get you to loosen up and find the motion of the figure without the contour.

Like others have said, gesture is not something to master on its own. It goes hand in hand with learning anatomy, construction, and everything else that's to do with figure drawing. So go practice those other things now, and revisit gestures again from time to time.

If you haven't, check out Proko's vids on gesture and figure drawing.
>>
>>2881640

Just watch Hampton's seminar on Gesture, it's free on CGpeers mang. It'll help you out tons. You don't need to know human anatomy to get awesome in gestures, they are literally just forms. You don't need to know how to render muscles/bones to do that.
>>

>>
>>2881667

You don't need to tackle anatomy to have the ability to communicate action with gestures, you could do them with anthromorgic looking beings or just lines. The core of gesture is to understand the relationships between the lines and some basic understanding of construction. But well, we all gotta learn anatomy sooner or later, I just don't think that's what's going to help you understand gesture better right now.

>>
>>2881717
Your values are off--you can go darekr in many places. Also just because you aren't using linework, doesn't mean you can neglect the drawing aspects. Using the shapes you lay down you need to ensure they describe things accurately and are precise. I recommend slowing down, and focusing on putting down each shape carefully.

I have this problem too, my hands haven't caught up with my mind yet. Yes.

There aren't any rules, of course - just tools. But just understand that you probably might not progress as quickly as others who are starting their fundamentals just now. Because of the dexterity of a pencil and your experience with the medium (in terms of using it throughout school and such) it's easier to get the basic skills of drawing put in place using that instead of resorting to a device like a tablet. But then again if you can handle being stressed more often here and there then I say go for it.

>but i don't intend to use traditional mediums!

Very few here do. The idea is that the skill transfers onto a digital medium. You can play ball whether on an outdoors court or in a gym.

Ok, guys, how's my understanding of female feet shape? Would you consider such feet attractive? Can you see (visualize from the shape) the posture, or rather, the motion I tried to capture?

>>

Footfag here. Left looks okay, right is like monster tier. Could be more attractive though. I can see the motion probably. Full figure when?
>>
>>2881912
Um, do you mean relative to the viewer? Not sure what could disturb you in the right foot (which, unfortunately, is going to be blocked off with a Spear the Gungnir, which serves as a convenient censor for her private parts and a sexual symbol at the same time).
Oh, and which motion that could be?

As for the full picture, I have already drawn most of the lineart, but it still needs a lot of clean-up and tweaking, and then I would spend a lot of time painting over it and drawing hair manually. It's an anime-esque picture of a nude winged vampire girl in ushanka, and she's pointing at viewer and making a lewd/rape face.

what immediately springs to mind is that your fingers do not start from your palm on a straight line. it is arced like the rest of the knuckles. also your thumb looks like its on backwards.

How long does it take to get out of symbol drawing? Im doing a front view portrait of myself in keys and it just looks like the fucking symbol drawing in the sticky to me.
>>

You should read Loomis's book on heads and hands. Use that as a base to do your head, you'll see a lot of improvement. Particularly the part about the eyes and the lips. Something you won't notice is explained by Loomis and once you get that, it looks a lot better. Noses are the bane of everyone's existence though.

Is it a good idea try copying drawings to imrpove myself?
>>
>>2882035
It certainly can help you learn how to draw something, but only if the original picture is good in that regard.

Does anyone else see shapes in the letters of the posts here? I've been doing so much practice lately that all I see are shapes of things everywhere. Can't explain what I mean properly desu. Need sleep.

How long does it take you to think before you put down a line? Is that why it's so perfect? You probably ghost a thousand times to make sure it's just right.

It takes a while to plan where I'm going to draw the next line, and how I get the lines to look smooth is I use my whole arm when I do my strokes sometimes my wrist as a habit but mostly arm movement.

I've been drawing from hampton's book (and also in general) for some time but in regards to value studies I've done almost nothing. Haven't really started out with using color either. So it depends on what you look at.

>>
>>2882205
Depends on what you want to draw
>>
>>2882207
People mostly, along with backgrounds and clothing. I'd like to get started on doing animation but the few times I've dabbled in it I get overwhelmed.
>>
>>2882210
Overwhelmed by what?
>>
>>2882211
probably by not being able to draw what he wants when trying to animate
>>
>>2882211
Trying to do too much beyond my skill level, like background rotating and stuff. I haven't done it recently bcuz my tab's been in the mail for a while and I don't have the money for cheap translucent paper.
>>
>draw cubes and shit to learn perspective
>practice lines over and over, cylinders
>after two hours of doing it I reward myself with drawing some anime shit for fun
>like how part of the drawing turned out
>get stuck with arms and legs of the character
>erasing shit over and over
>realize I've been erasing and redrawing the same parts for at least an hour, making no progress
>at that moment I know there's no reason to keep the part I like because I've simply been polishing a turd I'm unable to fix
>delete everything and start over

At times like this I feel like shit, but it also feels good to know when to stop.
>>
>>2882210
Draw a box. Proko for specifics. Sounds like you're going to be working a lot with line, composition, colour, figure, exaggeration, etc. For animation stuff maybe try draw with jazza; he has a couple of okay videos. Don't learn other stuff from him though, he's a bit terrible.
