How hard is it to actually get into the rule34/hentai/furry/porn industry? How many pics on average would you have to draw for free before getting any money from it? (Patreon, commissions etc.) Would you make more with just "normal" fan art?
>>2349487 It's easy to make money off porn. You don't even have to be a good artist to do this. Drawing furry OCs is where the easy cash is. Go make an account on FA and post some samples of your work and say you're open for commissions.
>>2349496 Art can be high risk, high reward. The problem with most artists, /ic/ specially, is they are so wrapped up in technical skill half of them are creatively bankrupt as fuck and can't form a compelling story or characters for shit. Technical skill is only half the battle. So they end up resorting to fanart/porn or just being another cog in the machine for some random game or animation studio. The latter is more helpful than the former though since you're actually getting industry experience and can make meaningful connections that way.
>>2349487 isnt hard, u can easy make 50 USD in a week just from the start, just open a tumblr, spam your shit and put a "commission" advice when you hit 100 followers. slow but seucre u gonna get money like a whore.
>>2349487 Depends on the quality of your art. If you're decent and effective it won't be to hard to earn a bit of extra pocket money, particularly within the furry and rule 34 crowd. But if you intend to make a living of it it's another matter.
You don't need to be a concept artist to have a social life as an artist nimrod. It's just a lot of artists on the internet, specially the ones who do fanart and porn, basically draw for attention online because they get none offline aka no social life.
I have a question that never seems to be addressed. If I want to make my own hentai comics, how can I go about setting up a paysite or some way of monetizing it? I know it would be easy to just set up a site with ads but everyone and their mom uses adblock so I don't think that's the best option. So where do I even start?
tumblr with donations. be popular already. nobody will donate though because people are cheap cunts. eventually (after a really strong first 1-2 issues) you move into patreon and put that shit behind a paywall. this is where you start raking in the dosh, donations as well because people are retarded and will throw more money where they see money already being thrown at something. then you gradually lower the quality until it's total shit that you can pump out like hot pancakes, while your weekly (try switching it to daily overnight) patreon pledge keeps skyrocketing.
remember the golden rule of succeding at art: people are fucking idiots.
>>2349893 Still seems iffy to me. For one thing I know that if you list your patreon as 18+ you can't even select Paypal as an option for receiving the money. Secondly, you need look no further than a few boards here to see people filesharing the hell out of people's patreon porn, so there's a ton of revenue lost. There has to be a way, I mean what were people doing before patreon existed?
>>2349582 >>2349611 I was checking out the forums for one of the fur sites once and went to the Introduction board, found a guy who was a middle aged audio engineer or something (successful, stable job) and on his part time he said he was a lion, his wife and kids were his pride, and he was there to have fun on the furry site. Basically >>2349586
>>2349929 >>2349936 I'm not sure why it's so surprising. There are all these people in the world and the vast majority just live normal ass lives. Everywhere you go you see people working. Who do you think those people are? Not that everyone is a furry, but we know there are tons of people into furry shit, so it's only statistically logical that there's someone who's a furry that works in practically every profession you could think of, and there are a ton of jobs that we as artists probably never think about. Like being a land surveyor. There was a job opening for that in my town a couple months ago. It paid nearly $20 an hour and required nothing more than a high school diploma and ability to do some low level math. You could be a bank teller or nurse's assistant, there's all kinds of jobs that provide stable hours & pay. Have a roommate or other low cost living & you can easily have lots of disposable income. We just never think about this because we're so focused on art.
>>2349973 >Would kill for a 20/h desk job that doesn't reqiure a degree. Where do I sign up ?? It's not about signing up, it's about having family members in authority, so they can give you a job. #nepotism
>>2349973 Just look around, man. I hear indeed.com is the new hotness for job searching. There are jobs that you'd never even fucking know existed, and that shit usually pays well because nobody's heard of that shit because nobody wants to do it.
>>2350223 Also yeah it definitely wasn't a desk job. If you're ever out somewhere and you see those dudes setting up those weird cameras on tripods but they look like a parking meter crossed with a traffic cone, that's the job. It's not exactly heavy lifting, but you would be driving all over the place setting up those cameras to measure the angles and topography of the land.
>>2350283 Yeah, that's partly why I didn't apply for it. I don't even know how to drive. I've never even started a car before and I'm almost 30 years old. It's pretty fuckin bad. A lot of insurance sales jobs pay well.
>>2350294 >I've never even started a car before and I'm almost 30 years old. It's pretty fuckin bad.
Location plays a part though. You don't really need to learn to drive when you live in the city. Parking is always a pain in the ass and expensive as fuck. Taking public transit is more ideal. If you're living in the suburbs though, getting around is a pain if you don't have wheels.
>>2350298 Yeah where I live having a car would actually be way more of a burden than a help, the only reason I'd really need one is if I ended up taking a job that's insanely far away. So far every job I've ever had was fairly well accessible by public transit.
>>2350303 I feel like even in Japan, yaoi has a much smaller pool of good artists. Apparently there's want for quality male featured porn, yet I go over to /y/ and see 2 or 3 patreon threads where people are shooting that cause in the foot.
>>2350355 Eh, bl visual novels have a fully rendered style too. It's simply the huge lack of good artists in the genre. Maybe furry has a somewhat lesser appeal to girls, so more focus goes into technical aspects, opposed to the generaly loose style of yaoi drawings.
>>2350369 >girls can't do technical work are you stupid? >bl vns vns have notoriously bad art because they aren't meant to have pretty pictures, they're meant to tell a story. many of the best selling vns have crab hands.
plus, /ic/ and many other communities love to say how much money drawing for furries gets you, this gets people who are interested in getting better (prolonged period on an art forum) and want to make money selling art into the furry 'fandom' so to speak despite them not being a furry in the first place.
>>2350375 more like lets not throw /r9k/ tier sexism into a thread at random when trying to prove how your shitty fetish is better because you waste 5k to get off. There are a multitude of reasons why yaoi lacks good art, the artists being female is not one of those.
>>2349487 How good of an artist are you? If you want to break into this "industry" for the money then I suggest you don't. Its pretty hard to do especially since the ones dominating right now are Art School drop outs who are better than all their competition.
>>2350379 Anecdotes mean nothing, there's plenty of very technically accomplished female artists. Almost EVERY artist I know is weak in technical portions of their art. >>2350385 Yes you can be. And instead of replying to valid points you're sticking to females. Ignore them. Yuri has lots of female artists and is similar to yaoi, yuri gets lots of great art.
>have professional job in design/illustration/animation >make $55/hr,but because I'm a contractor, hours greatly fluctuate from 10-40 hours, and self-employment tax takes a huge chunk of what I earn >get pretty good response for the softcore shit I draw for other boards, but am afraid it might hurt my career if I ever get found out >when I try to get my SFW stuff noticed, it's only ever seen by my group of friends and a small handful of other people Aside from furry shit, how easy is it to get supplemental income while staying somewhat anonymous? Like, getting noticed, handling transactions, that sort of thing.
>>2349881 back in the day (if you were well known), you'd do pre-orders for an unreleased comic (say like $5 each) that won't release till you make a certain amount. that's a bit too antiquated tho, and honestly lowers your total possible income off the comic quite a bit when compared to say something like patreon where you could get them to pay page by page as it's released. the trick to properly using patreon is not hiding anything of worth behind the paywall. full comic pages should be free, but the amount per update/month or whatever increases the amount of pages you put out in a certain amount of time
tl;dr study the free 2 play/freemium model and apply that to how you release content aka "sure, it's free but if you pay money you can advance faster..."
>>2350393 Vilppu is a brony as well, he admitted that in one of his videos. If you don't believe me, then do some research on google - he was working with the first generations of My Little Pony, and he ENJOYED it.
>>2350584 >Vilppu is a brony as well, he admitted that in one of his videos. >If you don't believe me, then do some research on google - he was working with the first generations of My Little Pony, and he ENJOYED it.
>want to draw fetish smut for money because people buy it >don't want my name attached to it
I've got a Paypal, what the fuck are my options? I've done this before, it's easy money, but I've got my name attached to some things and would rather not have this stuff associated with those work, at least not immediately.
>>2349496 It's also incredibly hard to stay motivated. I had a problem when I first started learnng to draw, and that was doing it for the wrong reasons. Now I've developed a mindset to learn to draw because I have a passion for it and art as a whole.
I make a great income drawing furry porn (primarily gay, some futa and to a lesser extent some female/straight). I think its easier with furry shit, less people doing it and the customers seem to generally be really positive and generous. You gotta get relatively good (just find peers who are making good money and get as good as them) and you gotta work every single day. Also I do a lot of bizarre bullshit fetishes so I nab some of the niche crowd that way.
when it comes to like, straight, human porn, I think its a higher risk/higher reward situation. There are, of course, a much higher amount of straight people in the world, but theres also way more artists too. Gotta work harder to make yourself known, but if you break into that greater audience I think you're absolutely set.
just make sure you're drawing something you want to draw, if you aren't a furry degenerate like me, don't draw furry degenerate shit, you'll burn out on it.
In my experience, if you work really hard and try your best and have good work ethic you can reach the frankly mediocre level of skill needed to make bank with a couple years. Good luck!!!!!!!
>>2350746 like paintings were used to show your status since forever, so why not have highly suggestive anthropomorphic animal pinups done with all the fancy chiaroscuro n shit instead of some generic classical painting themes?
>>2350711 >just make sure you're drawing something you want to draw, if you aren't a furry degenerate like me, don't draw furry degenerate shit, you'll burn out on it.
This! I draw fan-art for fun and I tried doing general furry porn commissions to get some extra pocket money. After a while... just couldn't do it anymore and started disliking drawing at all! Ditched it and kept drawing as a hobby, good decision.
>>2350760 Some artists do stuff similar to that, but mostly (cheaper and) digital. You have to remember that a lot of furries are regular folks that don't want that shit hanging on their living room wall, but much prefer to have it stored discreetly on the web (even none-lewd art)
>solid technical knowledge of form and light applied >beautiful color scheme >perfectly captured the softness of the female form >stick a retarded, guitar pick face over it with uguu eyes and cartoony facial features and ruin it because internet mouth-breathers can't masturbate to anything unless its japanese looking
Why do this? Why ruin a piece like this? Look at the mouth. Look at the flat faces. Unbelievable.
>>2349487 Took me about a month after opening my tumblr and mine is fully nsfw for minimum discoverability. Do fanart of popular shit and it helps if you were a bit good at imitating artstyles I guess. I only do about 3 requests per week though, but whats really a great feeling is that I've been at it for such a short time and I'm already making and respected more than that Andrew Dobson cunt.
