So my dad died in the navy
and his watch was the only thing that was left to me.
my mom and I were devastated but we are still strong
So im going into the navy to serve like my father when I found a note
under the watch was where I found it though I
cant read it because it was watered down so I took it to my friend
kent who was able to decipher it for me
so the note went like this

I love you son and to prove it I hid a message in this note to tell you that. to read it you must [spoiler]Read the first letter of each line[spoiler]

This picture might look kind of boring, and it's stuff you don't pay attention to while you're aboard a ship. Most of the time you're walking past at a brisk pace, yanking the hatches open and closed behind you, passing Sailors and Marines, Officers, Chiefs, whatever. You mutter "Afternoon, sir" and you keep going. But other times you're waiting in line for chow or something, standing there staring at these funny lanterns while the bells and whistles sound over the 1-MC. So I wanted to remember that.

Food selection is not always the best and often depends on what supplies you can get based on the area you are operating in. Fresh food runs out fast. And sometimes the budget isn't spent too well. Its nice to get steak and lobster occasionally; but when someone over orders it and thats all you can eat for 1-2 weeks because you don't want it to spoil not so good.

Pulling in to port isn't instantly a good time either. Lots of work to be done before anyone can leave the boat. And if you're in engineering you get to stay later to shut down the engine room after the others already left.

Fellow sailor here(Chief officer on a survey vessel) a few questions:

1. How long is a typical deployment (days between seeing home)
2. While submerged do you guys rely on dead reckoning or do you have a inertial navigation system or something different?
3. any fun customs or traditions? I heard there's one for crossing the equator, is there another for surfacing under the polar ice?
4. do many officers after their leaving the navy go to civilian shipping?
5. How's the pay?
6. As a percentage of the crew how many are designated as damage control?
7. How deep does a sub have to dive in order to get away from a storm/rough seas?
8. I heard that submariners only shower in 15 sec bursts, how bad is the smell?

.. I'll send you more questions when I can thank of them, and thanks for the posting

Good Questions.

1. 6 months minimum for a full deployment. Longest I spent underwater with out seeing the sun 66 days. No email, internet, or any contact with the outside world. Only had 4 port calls on the deployment, 3 days, 4.5 days, 5 days, 4 days.

2. We have many ways to navigate. Depends on how stealthy we need to be. Inertial, gps, visual, depth charts. I'm sure there is a lot more that could be said about it but im no NAV ET.

3. The list of traditions is very long. Crossing lines, pinnings, halfways nights, pizza pull ins, blue nose, shellback, angles n dangles, and a lot more. i would say cribbage is a big submarine thing too. the details that go into some of the traditions is sort of a right of passage so can't provide too many details. Submarines are a very tight knit community. When the surface officers see how we interact with ours they are normally quite confused or upset. In subs it means more to know your job and to be trusted to do it right then it does to have rank.

4.Officers and enlisted alike go to civilian shipping. However a lot of the officers and nuclear trained enlisted go to engineering jobs based shore side. More money to be had and most companies love hiring nukes.

5. The pays not enough to make up for it. $150 a month for E-5 under 2 years, capping at 425 for an e-9 over 8. You do get a lot of tax free pay though. Those combat zones are pretty popular destinations.

cont. in next post...

326314.jpg

6. 100% Every single person on that boat is trained to fight any casualty. We have responded to fires under way and have to be able to man a full fireteam in FFE's and have SW hose on fire in 5 mins. Flooding, Fire, Gas, Torpedo Evasion, doesn't matter the casualty it will kill 130 people very fast. Part of earning your dolphins is that your entire crew trusts you to do the right thing to fight the casualty and not need to be explained what to do.

7. Depends on the seas. If its light not far at all. If the seas are heavier a bit more. But once you get below the waves you don't feel anything. Smoothest ride you'll ever be on.

8. Showers are iffy. So if your seawater injection is to hot,say like in the gulf you won't even turn on the hot water knob. You'd boil. If the machinery that makes the water is broke or in reduced status or if we are trying to be quiet showers are secured. You find ways to stay clean. Baby wipes, moistettes, whatever. A lot of things are invented out of necessity underway. Using all sorts of materials. Duct tape sandals, duct tape belts, make shift doors, rewelding chairs, you take it as it comes. As for the smell there are far worse smells then body odor. Trash, bilge water, musty oil/water/ dust mixes. You clean these up every day because your boat leaks like a sieve.

We work on a 18 hour day. 6 hours of watch, followed by 6 hours of offgoing support(30 minutes to eat, 1 hour to clean, 1 hour of training, maybe drils, and maintance) then 6 hours of your own personal time.

Thank you for sharing. Haven't ever been on a military vessel, but have always wondered about a few things out of curiosity.

Is the 6 hour schedule also present when in high alert?
I mean, not when being shot at or anything, but suppose you track some enemy vessel for several days or something more mundane like that.

And what about the "Give me 110% on the reactor/engine"-stuff, is that even possible? Always thought it sounded like something from a kids story (with all respect if it is possible, of course).

It's much appreciated with the everyday pictures. My everydays is mostly spent on delivering newspapers and reading log files, which is not bad at all, but gets a bit routinely.

The 6 hour schedule is always a thing. Unless shit is hitting the fan then everyone is awake doing something.

Most of the movie stuff is made up. They can order precise bells pretty accurately though. If they need a specific speed we can give it to them as long as it doesn't exceed our current plant tolerances. Theres a lot that goes into that factor.

And heres a nice overview of a sub, mostly accurate but limited a bit.

It has its ups and downs like anything. Pretty fun at times, pretty frustrating sometimes. When things are clicking along, it's great. I enjoy traveling around and seeing different parts of the world, but we do a lot of other shit like inspections, lots of admin, and other necessary evils.

I'll be at the 10 year mark, roughly, when I finish my current obligation. Halfway to being retired by age 46. Still kinda debating if I want to do it for another 10 years or just call it a day and get a job somewhere and actually settle in somewhere. I guess whether or not I make LCDR will also play a role in that decision.

Tips to being a good JO. Know that you won't know the plant as well as your operators and use them to get the job done well.

Know which guys you can trust not to screw you. And make friends with the one who are good. If your guys like you'll, they'll make you look good in front of your superiors. If not you'll hate life.

Stay on your captains good side.

Try not to be the CRA unless you are a masochist and love paperwork.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? Iā€™ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and Iā€™ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and Iā€™m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. Youā€™re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and thatā€™s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little ā€œcleverā€ comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldnā€™t, you didnā€™t, and now youā€™re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. Youā€™re fucking dead, OP.

Thank you guys for the pictures and information. Questions to the submarine guy:

1) Since you sometime don't see any sunlight for days, how does this affect you/your mood?
2) That 18 hour schedule: Are the 6 hours of personal time used for sleeping, or do you get an additional 6 hours for that? (to fill a 24-hour-cycle) Does the 18 hour shift also apply to the officers (i.e. the captain and so? Or do the commander and the captain never stay on the bridge at the same time? (sorry, newbie-question :-)
>>
>>2576167
Days, its more 1-2 months. It depends on the person. I don't particularly care if i see the sun or not so it doesn't bother me. Others get antsy or angry or whatever. Everyone is different about it. The 18 hour schedule is boat wide for almost everybody except for pretty much the CO, XO, Doc, and the cooks and depending on the boat maybe the department heads. Everybody else is on the 18 hour schedule. The 6 hours of personnel time is for sleeping, games, movies, whatever you want. There is no designated sleep time.

Also don't run into underwater mountains. They always win.

They would have to be seriously damaged for that to happen to modern ships.

In WW2 some old destroyers were lost when in a typhoon, though.

Subfag here.

1-2 Months? No. More like over 3 months without sunlight.

About the 18 hour days. 6 on watch, 6 offgoing (meaning eating, showering, maintenance, study, ect.), and 6 oncoming (sleep time). But! There are always drills (every single day for nukes) and training at least 2-3 times a week. If the training/drills fall on the oncoming time, you don't get to just sleep through it. So you could effectively be on watch, have drills on your offgoing, have training on your oncoming, and then stand watch again. It's fucking miserable.

I need some help. A few months ago there was a thread that was about a year old that had pics of a construction project at the Chernobyl power plant site.

I'm pretty sure it was on this board but could have been on wallpapers. I checked in on the thread over a period of months but now it's gone and I'm not sure what board it was on.

Any help on finding it would be cool. Thanks for any help you can give Anons.

I've got this thread bookmarked and will be checking on it everyday or so until 404s.

There is no discretion on a submarine, if you have a problem falling asleep while the guy in the rack next to you is beating it, then you just aren't going to make it.

>>2623987
>>2628757
Sleep more then 6 hours underway doesn't really exist if you are a nuke or a-gang. I was a nuke, i averaged about 4 hours of sleep on my last deployment. Unless your an FT, STS, CS, YN or some other coner type that doesn't have any real work to do, then you can sleep 12 hours pretty much and no one cares. So yeah pretty much don't be a pussy.

Other subfag here. They changed it to 24-hour days.
Turns out people can work better with more sleep and less schedule rotation.

So now, instead of rotating your sleep cycle every day to a new section of the day, you get an 8 hour block for your section, and that's how it is for any underway or deployment unless you get switched into a different section.

Also, speaking of: A-gang type here. And yea, we pretty much don't sleep because we actually fucking own most of the boats mechanical systems. Even some nuke shit.

the USN has 10 designated carriers, meaning all they do is be a floating airfield
the US also has a fleet of smaller amphibious assault vessels which operate a small number of planes as well
and i believe there's only 5 of the 10 carriers present in the picture

subguy, if you're still here, was it worth being on a sub? was there at least good pay or something?

Never really realized she had such a funky shape. Was there a particular reason for it? Was it just to accommodate those lifts?

Still here. I keep an eye on the thread in case questions pop up.

That question depends, the money is not worth it. You don't get that much more. Most do it for the culture. It's a much tighter community, a family if you will. Everyone knows everybody and their family, dog, girlfriend, etc... On a surface boat that is not often the case especially on a carrier where your department alone may be 5-10 times the size of the entire sub crew. You may meet someone new even after both of you being on the boat for years.

The sub community is also a lot less political then the surface. Officers and enlisted alike get together and have good times outside of work. Officers up top generally look down on that kind of stuff.

Picture is where submarine reactors go to die.

Question for the sub guys: have any of you served on the new Virginia class subs? I saw a documentary and it looks incredible.

Even Ivan with a pair of binoc's on the ISS could see that shit sailing.

Put Ivan with a pair of binoc's in the pointy end of an anti-ship missile and that might be something to worry about. The real reason the design is a failure is simply that the Navy couldn't figure out what they want to do with it.
