OP here. I am not even Irish (nor American) and I missed that thread apparently.

The British Government barely undertook any action. They slowly ended the Corn Acts of 1815, but I'm not even sure if that was because of the Great Famine. And the Protestant English landlords actually continued to demand their rents from the Irish peasants.

It was actually considered a humanitarian crisis at the time (Karl Marx wrote about it) and people expected the Irish to rebel over it. It's true to a large extent the whole thing happened because the British elites saw the Irish as inferior and weren't as bothered about them dying, but whilst your average Brit at the time probably didn't have a great view of the Irish, they probably wouldn't approve of the brutallity.

Having said that though, they probably hardly heard about it, that goes for most atrocities associated with the empire

Pretty much this. Although a good portion of the land owners were British, a fair few were still Irish but there was more money in selling food to India than helping some starving family on the other side of the country. At the time we didn't see ourselves as Irish generally so there was no union or support from fellow Irish men.
