The whole reformation was just half of Europe telling the pope 'fuck you I ain't paying you shit anymore'. It was a political struggle, as was pretty much everything plebs consider 'religious'. There were countless Luthers before Luther, the reason why this one wasn't burned alive was that the Papacy was no longer in the state where he could do anything. The powers fed up with the Vatican could use Luther as an excuse to break off from the Catholic continental order and did so. There wasn't much sense in killing him afterwards, either. With Luther or not, the changes the reformation brought about would have happened anyway.
