Mediterranean France and the Rhone's trade networks were a quick sail to Rome, practically closer than Taranto and north eastern Italy. A further short land route to the Garonne and its tributaries and the Atlantic coast is accessible. Over the centuries latin filtered down through the upper classes to the peasants and slaves resulting in the romance Occitan language which seems to have more in common with Modern French than Germanic languages.

When the Franks took northern France, ambitious eyes started to look south at France's natural borders with the Alps and Pyrenees. Again the elite imposed their language except this time the motivation was purely diplomatic, nobles had to learn Latin if they wanted to get anywhere in life, the Franks were willing to ditch their savage barbaric primitive course Germanic roots in favor of sophisticated intelligent superior imperial Latin, kind of like the Mongols adopting Chinese culture.

The Gauls spoke Gaulish. The Romans invaded, and eventually the Gauls came to speak a sort of vulgar Latin (local dialects of Gaulish+Latin). Then the Franks moved in, and added their germanic twist to the vulgar Latin, and this eventually became French.
