It all goes back to the banality of evil. Most of the evil dictators were led there on a path of good, or at least 'right' intentions. I'm sure he did love people, I'm sure he was a good person at some point in his life but when you're in a situation of power and that is your whole existence, the lives of Ukranian pig farmers probably doesn't warrant a second thought.

Some people are born without conscience. While most sociopaths/psychopaths experience trauma in early life (and lord knows that Stalin did), there is the occasional one that just seems to be EXTREMELY bad luck.

Also, it's now widely accepted that psychopaths are incurable; if you don't have a conscience, you're not going to suddenly develop one.

You have to admit that Stalin saved Russia from true internationalist Bolshevism.

From what I have read from people's personal accounts etc he could be a genuinely loving person, especially towards his first wife and his daughter. He apparently liked children a lot and I speculate that it might have been because children posed no threat to his own power. I think he suffered from extreme paranoia and saw everyone as a potential enemy who had to be dealt with. He was also quite willing to make sacrifices as part of what he saw as the bigger picture which I think shows that he struggled to have empathy for those he did not care for already.
