>driven away from Ireland
>driven away from England
>defeated in France, willingly lost their culture and became Normans
>driven away from America by stone age Natives
>defeated by Moors
>Hedeby burned down by Slavs
>Varangian Guard lost most battles as well
wow they are so impressive lmao want proper pillagers and rapists look at Mongols or something
Not really. Many Vikings married into families, and then we also have to remember the Normans were Vikings to begin with. That being said they are one of the most overrated historical warriors, but now you're just being butthurt.
The vikings got annihilated as any cohesive force in this battle. Further Norse activity in Ireland isn't really viking activity anymore so much as it is foreigners integrating into regular dynastic politics.
>Abandoned Raiding Shit
>Today well developed countries.
>Attack weakened civilizations.
>Fail to centralize.
>Let clan loyalties get in the way of greater good.
>Laughingstock of Central Asia
>Exists as a buffer state on the sufferance of Russia and China.
>Most Mongols aren't in Mongolia but in China and prefer to be Chinese citizens.
All of that is just due to the fact they were shit in pitched battles. They had no scholars or historians, their princes were not instructed in strategy and tactics. They had no (or few) horses in an age were heavy cav used to win almost all battles.
But they were great fighters individually, they were explorers and sailed all across Europe and even America. They worked as mercenaries in many Kingdoms.
>>Varangian Guard lost most battles as well
That's because the Emperor was a dumbass. They were the most loyal troops Byzantium ever had.
>vikings were fierce warriors
>who cares modern scandinavia is a developed country!
lmao fucking retard by that logic we might also bash Roman Empire because modern Italy isn't that great
the vikings are easily the most overrated 'warriors'(if you can call a band of thugs clunking monks over the head "warriors") in history. Have you seen the /tv/ show about them? If they made a historic show like that about some non-white group(especially if it were blacks, mehicans, and ayyrabs) /his/ would lose their fucking minds and start screaming about SJWs or some other meme group
>conquered England three times
>founded Kievan Rus'
>Norse-gaels are huge players in Irish and Scottish politics, many famous Scottish clans like Clan Donald were founded by vikings, the gallowglass become a staple of Irish warfare
If anything the vikings are underrated.
But they weren't trying
they mostly were just raiding and trading
and the normans were still fucking over French territory even after they supposedly swore fealty to the French king (pretty much the reason why England and French kept fucking with each other throughout history).

Viking did conquer England, retard, and colonized it to such an extent that we borrowed basic words from them such as 'they, them and their', 'are', and have North Germanic syntax
>who is Sweyn forkbeard
>who is Cnut the Great
>who is the great heathen army
The Vikings did not conquer England, they conquered a portion of the island of Britain and they called it the Danelaw. The English kingdoms on the rest of the island would not be conquered until 1066.
Also Alfred defeated the great heathen army.
Sweyn and Cnut were both Christian kings who can hardly be called Vikings...
In any force in military history, context is important. How would you characterize the Vikings? They were a Germanic tribe in an era defined by the rise, fall and settlement of Germanic tribes.
But they had something unique for the period: Amphibious warfare and access to rivers that were only navigable to their extremely shallow draft boats.
Now there are some retards in this thread who talk about this as a negative. These people are as retarded as the norseaboos who think that they could do know wrong and were like Germanic Sparta. What they were, were people who had their moment in time. They could pick where they wanted to fight and so they chose to fight where their enemy was weak. That's not cowardice, that's using your advantage.
So, they could move freely. However, due to their status as marines, they couldn't take cavalry with them. When Europe was marked by its infantry based armies, this wasn't an issue. When chivalric, mounted warfare developed, they were completely outclassed and their prominence faded everywhere but Britain and Ireland and even that wasn't to last. So, they were potent for a time but that was based on their ability to outmaneuver their opponents.
That's Hnefatal. It's "Viking Chess" the object of the game was to fight your way back to your boats after being ambushed by a larger force.
What is it with these fucking butthurt Viking threads? Can't we have any unbiased argument on a topic? That one holocaust thread we had was the closest we came to such a thing, but even then /pol/tards ruined it with their shitposting.
>they were culturally French and had french admixture
No they weren't. The Normans and the French stayed as far away from eachother as possible.
The "French" had largely left Normandy when the Normans came, the few that remained could be called more germanic than over the modern french fry one might find today living in Normandy.
They adopted Horsemen from the Franks, that's about it.
>Horsemen replaced Huskaarls as the warrior class of society
By Horsemen I mean knights (Cnight/Riddari)
blatant lies you just said people who were well known to marry into local population and being mixed with them after two generations didn't have french admixture and that using french language and customs is not being culturally french
>The Normans and the French stayed as far away from eachother as possible.
But that's false, you monkey
Normans heavily interbred with the locals
Rollo's son (1st generation after arrival) was already 50% French through his mother
By 1066, Normans had huge French admixture
It's one autist from /pol/ who's hell bent on convincing us that vikings are a jewish plot.
It's actually probably this guy. >>554823 Note how he immediately accuses you of having a religion or ideology based upon zero evidence? That's /pol/'s first move when you catch them in the open. Much like screaming /lit/ or reddit.
Because some people can't get over their inferiority complex and try to identify themselves as "Scandinavian" or "Vikings" and are so emotionally invested in this idea that they will cry and shout anything that challenges their fantasy as being superior.
We actually don't know if Rollo took a French wife or not IIRC, his sons may have been birthed by a Nordic woman.
However his grandsons were certainly 50% French, and by the time of William II the Bastard/Conqueror, all remnants of Nordic blood was gone.
