Depends.

Jesus-time Israel was pretty Hellenized thanks to Alexander & Successors so a lot of greek swords were popular, like the Xiphos, Machaira, or Kopis.
>>
>>534058
so it's possible that they all had different kinds of swords?
>>
Probably none because they were poorfags.
>>
>>534083
poorfags don't need a treasurer

Light scrapers

Swords were not expensive in the Roman empire, they produced more metal than most modern countries.
>>
>>534108
But was it even legal for a Jew to carry one?
>>
>>534116
When did banning weapons ever work in history?
>>
>>534125
I'm not saying that if it was illegal for Jews to carry swords then the Apostles didn't, I just want to know if Jesus told them to break the law XD
>>
>>534141
There is no account any of that happened outside of the bible so its pointless.
>>
>>534153
The OP question is hypothetical anyways
>>
Silver ones for fighting Demons.
>>
>>534164

Well, you might or might not consider the accounts in the Bible accurate, but it does make it clear that at least one of the Apostles was armed when they came for Jesus at Gethsemane.

>>

*cocks
>>
>>534108
you do realize that swords are the most expensive medieval weapon that isn't a siege weapon, right? Even in the Middle Ages only the upper class could afford swords.
>>
>>534791
So this means that in the biblical story that the apostles were stock piling military weaponry that was quite expensive.

No wonder people were pissed that Jesus got an oily hairjob.
>>
>>534791

>you do realize that swords are the most expensive medieval weapon that isn't a siege weapon, right? Even in the Middle Ages only the upper class could afford swords.

Complete bullshit.

http://medieval.ucdavis.edu/120D/Money.html

You could get a cheap sword, like a falchion, for the cost of 2 shovels. Like most other weapons, if you wnated a good one, it would cost you, but you could pick up a cheap piece quite easily.

>>534883

He has no idea what he's talking about: just look at the phrasing used in the bible story. How much money do you really think you could get for a used cloak? But apparently it's enough to get a blade.

The Roman Empire wasn't medieval.
>>
>>534009
Probably a flamberge
I mean let's be honest, Is their any weapon more suitable for holy men?
>>
>>536305
A flamethrower, fire purges heretics.
>>
>>536305
A flamberge would probably be endorsed by the orthodox church, since it has two crossguards

Possibly

Jews even had fucking longswords thanks to the Galatian Celts and the Parthians. The former being present in Judaea as mercenaries
>>

when Jesus tells Peter in Matthew 26:52 to put away his sword, the word translated as sword is "machairan".

bottom in pic related is a machairan.
>>
>>536413

exactly what youd expect someone to conceal-carry under a toga

"The Koine of the New Testament uses the word makhaira to refer to a sword generically, not making any particular distinction between native blades and the gladius of the Roman soldier. This ambiguity appears to have contributed to the apocryphal malchus, a supposedly short curved sword used by Peter to cut off the ear of a slave named Malchus during the arrest of Jesus. While such a weapon clearly is a makhaira by ancient definition, the imprecise nature of the word as used in the New Testament cannot provide any conclusive answer."
>>
>>536452
just to note, Aramaic has the word 'sayf',
pretty much the same as Arabic.

>>536413
Makhaira just means sword.

In modern greek, it means "knife."

Archaeologists today think it applies to single edged greek swords. Which used to be very popular among hellenic cavalry.
>>
why the fuck did apostles have swords anyway
>>
>>534791
>muh only nobles had swords meme
Get off this board and stay off

don't go to /k/ either faggot
>>
>>534033
fairly easy, there is actually mention of at least one of them carrying and owning a sword while Jesus is still alive. I think it was in the book of David. around the time he's explaining what they should do once he's gone.
>>
>>538716
>Hang around outside the city and in the wilderness.
>Walk between settlements
Safety pretty much.
>>
>>538716
Because they were free men rather than slaves.
>>
>>538716
because being a holy man is only useful when the guy coming after you believes in the same god. And the vast majority of thugs, murderers and thieves did not stop to ask which religion you were before demanding your money.
>>
>>538716
Jesus's goal was an armed rebellion against the Roman Empire.
>>
>>538716
Short answer: Jesus said they all need ro have one
>>
>>538921

No, two already had then and he said that was enough.
>>
>>538716
Jesus was forcing fulfillment of a prophecy. Nobody would take them as brigands if they weren't armed.
