this is one of the reasons i'm a big fan or storage-level compression: applications don't even need to know if the data is compressed, it's all transparent and there's no problem with any unsupported format.

So when i first setup my storage pool i enabled compression and forgot about it, now ~3 years later it's buying me ~100GB in compressed data (out of ~1.3TB).

How well does pandaviewer work?

I'm quite fond of Gelbooru, it makes navigating around different tags very easy. In addition, its rather easy to find new stuff & combine tags.

I dont get this feeling at all with SadPanda.
I'm under the impression that it stuffs it content away from the user. Is there a complete index over tags I can search for? Do you have any general searching tips?

I tried it, needs a lot of work and I don't have the patience to wait on that. Don't think english is the dev's first language either looking at all the typos. Took me 2 hours for it just to load up 400 images everytime I load up the program, with an option to load more but gave a warning on performance issue for anything over a 1,000 files and I have tens of thousands of images so I'm not even going to bother. I don't think I'd even use it for non images either.

You could still let Hydrus grab tags and have another viewer order them properly. All you'd do is drag and drop a group of images over a tag or vise versa and tag everything. Most viewers can already do this.

Hydrus basically just copy your images into it's own Hydrus folder so no harm is done to your main images(its why you need bigger drive space). You can tell it what to do with your main images after importing them in the options. Even when you delete your main images you can take them back out of Hydrus and the images will be the same as if/when you imported them. You really can't fuck up with Hyrus. It takes some playing around though so it best to try a few images and messing around with the setting to really get a better understanding.

Aside from that get the highest res you can afford. Scans keep getting higher res but you'll probably be stuck with your monitor for the next few years.

I can definitely sympathize with not wanting to use shitty online viewers, but that's pretty much exactly why FAKKU has invested a lot of time and money into its online reader (as it's basically the thing I work the most on).

Since you say you have a subscription, is there some particular issue you have with the reader? What do you use to read on the desktop? In general the online reader should mirror the capabilities of desktop readers quite well. And assuming your internet connection isn't completely terrible the prefetching of pages should make things like load times pretty much a non-issue too.

You do have quite a bit of customization available in terms of that though (picture related). I don't want to learn to use a different reader for every single site. So I download stuff and can use one reader for everything. And I'll upgrade it when *I* want to and not when some site admin forces me to. Usually with the one feature gone that I really liked.
The other thing is that of course it doesn't work offline, which is also a major disadvantage. Too many hotels with bad wifi.
Sorry, but you can't fix either of those issues, so it'll have to remain a shitty online viewer and I'll keep downloading.
Also if all you can say is that it's not worse than most desktop viewers... that's not very positive. Though I do grant you it's the least shitty of online readers that I've seen, for what that's worth.

It's not really known and kind of difficult to get setup but once you do it offers unparalleled customization in how you can browse through your galleries and hundreds of custom hotkeys and even mouse gestures for anything you can think of. But I mainly like it because it allows me to browse through my collection like a steam library after spending a ton of time setting it up, but you can set it up any number of ways.

Wish it was still being worked on because there is a fair amount of bugs and memory issues but I've learned to work with them.

I just don't think your online viewer is ever going to come close to what some programs can do.

Well, that can hopefully be solved by one day having a general desktop app version of it... because definitely good enough for that, even if I say so myself.

Though what'll probably happen first before a completely general thing is that there will be a desktop FAKKU client that will likely be able to read archives too (since users should be able to read books they download from the site with it too) and also cache subscription chapters for offline use later (this is something I definitely want to do in the future - it would be nice if this could be done in the browser directly but sadly HTML5 storage methods tend to have too tight size limits in the places where it would matter the most, ie. mobile devices so a separate client is really the only good solution).

Well if you want my totally honest opinion I'd say it beats quite a few desktop readers in terms of usability.

Also, do remember that the subscription service is a catalog rental service, not a magazine buying service. You're paying a monthly fee in order to access the entire translated magazine catalog for a limited time, not purchasing individual issues. It would be nice if you could do both, and hopefully one day there will be the option for it, but that'd obviously be more expensive since you'd be buying to own instead of just renting access.

You'd be surprised - HTML5 is really capable. The only temp solution is to add, "page:1" "page:2" "page:3"(without the quots) ect. in the same place you go to tag your image ONE AT A TIME. This is my biggest gripe with Hydrus, it's really not Pixiv(or any other site that use a smart file name system) friendly.

To be fair, if the only complaints you have are things that can't be fixed according to your own words, that makes it sound like the perfect online viewer. I know your beef is with online viewing in general, but constantly calling it shitty feels a bit much.

Personally I'm pretty happy with it. Don't know what more you want than flip pages and zoom, the first is super intuitive but the latter can be finicky. My only real complain is that it gets confused and swaps between left-right and right-left reading style when you try to go back sometimes, but looks like you can actually turn that off in the settings.

I do use happypanda, but for manga and full cg sets
But it's not the best if you want a quick thumbnail view of a lot of images, so that's what i use hydrus for (also the tags)

Unfortunately some images (like 2 or 3 which i wouldn't make a gallery for on happypanda) do still require a bit of order and hydrus can't handle that

I get it while trying to access favorites, my galleries, archive download, petition to expunge/rename
I started getting it a few days ago but refreshing the page made it work, now it never does

If you download with a gallery downloader, it can grab tags if you tell him to
If it's an image you downloaded out of it, you csn grab tags for it from a booru post (if it has it), by using a tag parser script you can find on the hydrus board
Alternatively you can synchronize with the tag repository and it should grab the tags
In the extreme cases, you'll have to tag them yourself

Archive level compression is indeed basically pointless provided that the actual images have been properly compressed to begin with (which means image optimization for both PNG and JPG and quantization for black & white PNG), though it's still a decent idea to stick the files in a stored (ie. no archive-level compression used) archived so that a chapter/book is treated as one file rather than dozens or hundreds. Makes it easier to move stuff around.

Unix/Linux systems have TAR files for that sort of thing, but most Windows users only know how to use ZIP, and occasionally RAR, files. Both of those by default have archive-level compression. You can make archives without them, but that requires a decent program like PeaZip.

And honestly, the whole RAR format really needs to die. If you can be arsed to go buy or pirate WinRAR, then you can go get a decent, free software program like 7Zip (or the aforementioned PZ that contains it), which support all the features of RARs and more, at no cost. Why anyone still clings to the RAR format is beyond my comprehension.

Not really? Basically anything can make and deal with zips without compression. It's what you really should be using when distributing compressed image files due to being supported by pretty much everything.

Also yes, RAR is basically a completely pointless proprietary format that no-one should be using in this day and age.

The entire fansubbing/scanlation community seems to have this thing about not understanding the value of open and non-proprietary standards. Archive files are a trivial nusiance compared to the fact that encoders don't have any idea how video formats should look, or how their monitors should be calibrated. Instead they just tweak everything so it looks right on their particular installation of MPC-HC, and whatever codecs they've assembled, which means that players that actually follow the written specifications like mpv or VLC tend to choke on or render them poorly.
