A course mate designed and presented this during a tutorial session. We're in our 3rd year of Graphic Design. What does /gd/ think of this sort of thing?
I'd say it's more art than graphic design

>this sort of thing
i don't see it's purpose and it's tedious to look it has way too many rookie mistakes at so I'll probably erased it from my memory by the time I'm finished writing this.

critical design is pretty cool and it gave our generation (2010-201X graphic design students) a strong iconic style. Don't delude yourself thinking you're being super edgy though, every 15yo kid with a tumblr account knows about it.
Your actual piece isn't bad, but I think you're using tropes without understanding what they mean. Real critical design takes source material from the study of discarded visual pop culture, it's a lot less random than it seems.

the best part here imo are the distorted smileys, referencing 80's mdma culture and the brushtrokes, which are reminiscent of the illustrator default brush interface. The question, again, is is your "mate" aware of the referential system he is creating and does he have agency over it ?

And what "sort of thing" is this? Is it a bashing of a style he doesn't like or of what too many people are doing? Because I don't like it either but I've never really seen it before. And I don't see what context this would be "presented" in. Its just some bullshit doodling in vector software.

the style is called "critical design" as was pointed out here >>291128. It's been around for well over a decade. It's a style that's been mostly prevalent in graduate programs in graphic design at elite schools such as Yale. Over the past 5 or 6 years, it's been used commercially for rave/club events and merchandise and as a result is starting to filter into the mainstream.

They are very up on the trends, very aware of the things that are happening in this particular world. I can't comment for them, as I don't know them well enough. That said, I thought it would be interesting to take it here and ask what a board like /gd/ makes of this 'style'.

'Thing' as in the style, I've seen it, we've all seen it cropping it a lot over the past 3 years at least. It was presented as a poster and has also been posted online.

Does time to this 'critical design' reflect on the quality of it then?
>>291144
Stop calling this ‘critical design’! That’s so dumb. Critical design is a conceptual posture not a graphic style!
>>291178
It's both, apparently.

this look actually cool, but it's kinda sad how the "mate" couldn't even design his own post-modern fuckery

>judging critical graphic design through your own subjective aesthetic lens
You are completely missing the point. Or are you ?
