Just ended a career and looking to start new, now leaning towards graphic design. For those doing the work now, what direction can you give as far as education and direction to head?
Give up.

Someone else here:
I am being pressured into starting a Tumblr account to get myself out there as a graphic designer. Are there any other sane websites to promote myself that are just as effective as that is supposed to be?

behance, artstation, cargocollective, maybe even instagram or flickr. but the best option is to get your own site.

get a bachelor's in communication design, marketing, graphic design, whatever it is in your area if that's something you're able to do. if not, find graphic design that inspires you and figure out why, read theory and do some online summaries of a design history course, learn the tools and the differences between what jobs need which ones, get a stable entry level job and freelance or move up/out (expand skillset) when you're more confident

what kind of background do you have in art/design?

Depends what form of art you might be getting into. If only splatter art then...yah not a a lot of options unless you break it big somewhere.
