I am being pressured into starting a Tumblr account to get myself out there as a graphic designer. Are there any other sane websites to promote myself that are just as effective as that is supposed to be?

get a bachelor's in communication design, marketing, graphic design, whatever it is in your area if that's something you're able to do. if not, find graphic design that inspires you and figure out why, read theory and do some online summaries of a design history course, learn the tools and the differences between what jobs need which ones, get a stable entry level job and freelance or move up/out (expand skillset) when you're more confident

Depends what form of art you might be getting into. If only splatter art then...yah not a a lot of options unless you break it big somewhere.
