hey so my laptop dGPU on my Mac is busted, I ran calculations it would cost about the same as a chinkpad. What are the upsides to a T420 over X220? Is the upgrade for T420 to T430 noticeable? Same with X220 to X230. The laptop I currently got is a used MBP2011 from. my sister any help is appreciated but it's looking like either a xx20 or xx30 series. Use case is just programming and music and I don't mind using a linux distro.

Picked up a "9 cell"/""""7800mAh"""" for my X230T off ebay from China. I'm feeling like I got chink'd since the max Lenovo makes for this model is a 6 cell, although half the labeling is in German so I guess it could possibly be an aftermarket custom 9 cell or something. It's noticeably heavier than my 6 cell.

Nothing in particular. There was the issue of Ivy Bridge desktop CPUs having shit TIM and needing to be delidded to get good temperatures, but laptop CPUs are already bare die so it doesn't apply.

An i7 X230 will be a bit of a housefire, as would a quadcore+dGPU T430, but no stock configuration should ever hit real problem temperatures. My 3720QM+K2000m W530 stays comfortably below 80C all the time.

You can't put a quadcore i7 in an X230, since it's soldered, but the dualcore i7 models will still get pretty toasty. T430 can handle a quadcore if it's an iGPU model with a dGPU heatsink. T530 wouldn't have a problem with a quadcore CPU since it was a stock configuration.

The wait is real now, I had to order the new keyboard for the x220 because I made that rookie mistake of putting too much rubbing alcohol on it and broke it

Not I gotta wait a week for a new one to arrive, but the new one has a soft rim trackpoint and in the mean time I just swapped the keyboard from my t420 and can use that for now. I was surprised to find one for twenty dollars even though.

You can. You have to flash the EC to make it work fully (or at least almost fully, there's maybe two fn key combos that don't work), but I don't think you need any special hardware to do that.

Thoughts on Lenovo Chromebooks? I kind of want a 4chan dedicated web browsing machine so I can post on /tpg/ all day long. I don't want to use whatever Chrome OS comes with it, I'd probably put Gallium on it.

So I used the method mentioned here about rejuvenating the battery of a chinkpad by draining it 100 percent, charging it, leaving it to sit for 2 days, draining it to 40 percent, and repeating that whole operation twice

Seems like it only gave me about a half an hour more battery life, should I use the freezer method to rejuvenate it? Will I see the "massive boosts" that were claimed.

My W510s looked as bad when I got it, I didn't realise they were supposed to come with the textured surface because of how disgusting my one looked. Ended up scraping all of the nasty shit off with a knife which took all of the original textured surface too.

I bought a Thinkpad off Ebay from a top rated seller and he hadn't sent me any updates or tracking at all for a couple days. I contacted him and after a day he got me my tracking information.

It's been 3 days since and my tracking has been stuck at "Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item". The seller isn't in a hurricane area or anything and the item is apparently being shipped from literally the state right next to mine.

Hey everyone I need a bit of help in deciding. I'm planning on upgrading my i3 X240 to either an i5-5200U from an X250 or an i7-4600U from an X240. I do understand that the i7 would be about 10%-15% more powerful.

The thing is, I'll be using this primarily for audio production, and therefore the i7 with more threads would be obvious. However, the issue here is power consumption + RAM. I'm having what I believe motherboard problems with my T420 (fails to boot sometimes, turns off randomly, no logs, etc). I read somewhere that some Thinkpads have manufacture problems if they were made between September and December 2011.

Where can I find the date my Thinkpad was manufactured? Also if mine wasn't one of the unlucky ones, what could cause board issues? I've never treated my laptop badly. Also checked for battery and PSU and they're just fine.

Battery is good with 6cell, very good with 9cell. If you tinker a bit you can pull 8h from it on the i5s, and 6ish on the quadcores.

I can't find my old post, but in a nutshell;

CPU - i5 dual, i7 dual, i7 quad. Middle is pointless, latter is marked with MQ. Easy to swap.

RAM - DDR3, two slots, both swappable.

Storage - one internal SATA 2.5 bay, one internal M.2 2242 SSD slot, optional one 2.5 drive in the DVD drive bay. It might not be clear where the drives in the one you're buying are, ask if you want to know.

Screen - 766p/900p TN, 1080p IPS. 1080 swap is cheap, not a big deal. B140HAN01.1, .2 or .3 are recommended. IIRC it's matte/glossy/semi-matte in that order.

Battery - 6cell or 9cell, later has a rear bulge. Worth it.

Trackpad - if you want the classic style, swap it for the T450 one.

Keyboard - modern Lenovo chiclet, can't be swapped unlike xx30 series. By chiclet standards it's pretty damn good though.

GPU - GT730M. Pretty much pointless, I'd avoid it. Can't be swapped without swapping the motherboard.

Anything else I'm missing? Going to format this into a nice copypasta at some point.

That shit sounds like an entire disassembly.

On the T440p is way easier, just remove the backplate (2 screws), the palmrest (7 or 8 screws) and replace the touchpad (4 screws) which is a component of the palmrest. Reassemble and done.
