Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook, GETAC's,Toughbooks).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN HP Elitebook (2570p, 8770W, 2170p), Dell Latitude/Precision (E6430, E6440, E7440) and P, T, X, and W SERIES if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

Recommended original IBM models:
T60, T61, X60, X61, 860, Transnote, PC110
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

A couple of days ago I posted about buying a T60 that appeared to have a T7300.
As far as i can tell, it was originally a T61 CTO model that someone put a T60 SXGA+ lid / screen on.
The fan sounds like death and the frame is cracked near the left hinge, but it's pretty neat otherwise.
>>
>>62332685
They're alright if you're talking about the old -t models. Work like any normal pressure-sensitive tablet.
If you're talking about the "thinkpad" tablets lenovo put out, they're shit.
>>
>>62332796
I'd take a T430 over a T440 unless maybe you get a T440P. So basically I'd go T430 or T450 if you want to spend more.

Or you could go T420 if your an autist about the keys and layout and don't mind sandy bridge.

Seriously, this is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I managed to sell my MacBook air which was twice as old and cost half as much for more money than I paid for the ThinkPad. I've used the difference to buy more RAM (It now has 12GB which is the max supported) and I swapped the ISO keyboard for an ANSI one.

The machine is fucking excellent. Love the screen, love the keyboard, the only thing about it that sucks is the touchpad, but that's fine since I use a mouse whenever I can anyway.

Sorry for the dumb question.
Why it is always the X220 and the T420 being recommended, rather than the xx30's?
From what I gather the latter have largely better hardware and I/O.
Is the new keklet keyboard that much of a dealbreaker? Are there anymore issues that should change my mind about looking for an X230?
>>
>>62333200
No, get the x230
>>
>>62333200
>better hardware
yes
>better I/O
I/O is almost identical except all 30 series models have USB 3.0. You decide if it's worth it.
>keyboard dealbreaker
not really. the layout is completely fucked up but the typing experience is pretty much the same. Also you can swap is with a 20 series keyboard and use a modded BIOS to get everything to work.

If you want a Thinkpad from that era, I'd say you should get a 30 series. You're not gonna regret choosing better graphics and USB 3 over the original keyboard.
>>
>>62333244
Agreed. The biggest problem I have with the 30 keyboard is that the function keys aren't grouped in four so it's really hard to find them in the dark without backlight or thinklight. On the 40 series they started grouping them again.
>>
>>62333244
Not him, but I'm trying to justify saving $100 on a t430 rather than spending it on a t450. Any reason why I shouldn't go for the 450?
>>
My x201 lcd panel is broken. I already changed the keyboard and the battery so I feel like I've already "invested" some bucks in this machine.
I find replacement parts for around 70USD (converted from my local currency)
However, for 2.5 times the price I can safely land an honest thinkpad x220 (not counting the battery change and the newer keyboard I'd buy for comfiness).
Should I repair my current one or is it a dead horse (b-but muh 16:10) and I'd be better off getting the last generation of real thinkpad with a decent keyboard?
>>
>>62333244
Does the 20 series keyboard mod fix the ctrl and fn keys placement? iirc that was an issue with it a while a go.
>>
>>62333303
>less stable chassis
>ULV CPU

Interesting.
But in that case, why would the OP say xx20 rather than xx30? Asking because I do believe I will fuck around with parts and I somehow got the impression that the xx20 are the ones for which there's the biggest second hand parts market.
Is that true?
>>
>>62333438
The 20 and 30 series use the same chassis except for the palmrest. Most parts are interchangable so the market for used parts is basically the same for both of them. I don't know if you can swap boards between them but the internal components that are swappable will work on both gens.

Probably to be on the safe side, at least for a few years, probably a Core iX processor. i5 will be enough and an i7 will definitely keep you going. But the i7 will get hotter and use more battery and that might be a concern. I wonder if a Core 2 Duo would suffice. It can handle my emulators so I don't see why it couldn't run Lol.

i bought x220 because it can support classic keyboard. 230 can not support it fully which pisses me off, modding gets you an only partially functioning classic keyboard.

>>62333906
Replace the track pad if you're going to use the track point at all. It's completely unusable otherwise.
>>
>>62333866
Not entirely. It will be stronger but the battery life might not be as good. If you travel a lot, that might be a concern but if you get a really good genuine battery, it might not be an issue.

I have an i7 in my W520 but I haven't put it through it's paces yet. Also the battery is only 50% of it's original capacity.
>>

>>
>>62332873
this
>>
>>62334091
I say go for it. Pretty much all the i7 line will have hyperthreading. So even a dual core will be a quad core and a quad core will be an eight core. It's more complicated than that of course but you get the idea. Depending on what school work you need it for, an i7 will serve you well for pretty much anything ordinary and probably extra ordinary too.
>>
any links to the people that put modern thinkpad hardware into old ibm thinkpads. A perfect 16:9 one to put into would probably be the z60t

>>
>>62334208
Thank you
>>
>>62334163
I honestly couldn't say as I don't have an i5 ThinkPad model. I have a dual core i7 and a quad core i7. The dual core has pretty decent battery life and it's a tablet version so it might be draining the battery more. But my x200 tablet, which is a Core 2 Duo, can last for 5-6 hours on a chink battery.

The i7 does get a bit hotter. I notice it when sitting on the toilet and it's on my bare legs. The thing is that it gets to a base heat and stays there when doing browsing the web or doing some picture editing and only goes down if you go idle or set it to sleep. It's not like burning my skin but it's hot enough to make me break a sweat. Then again it could be from shitting too

So the T440p has two M.2 ports, one is for the Wireless card with 1x PCIE connection and the other (for SSD) is SATA based. The latter cannot run an eGPU but the other potentially can. I was thinking about trying it out and seeing if it will work and if it will I will 3D print some components and cut a hole into the bottom plate and have the eGPU socket mounted on the bottom like how the dock socket is then incorporate the eGPU connection into the docking station. I haven't seen anybody trial and error it and an eGPU kit is only around $80 so I think I will try it, worse case scenario I can repurpose the kit to my X220. Anyone else considering or done any mods?

Just swap it. I like this one, but there's nothing wrong with the other style. I came off a 2010 Macbook Pro.

You can also shove a quad core processor in this one, plus I think it's easier to get the 1080 screens for this one.

It's also bigger, which might be a negative for you.

Yeah, I meant that mine was bigger. It's completely usable, as long as you install the Lenovo drivers for the trackpad. It lets you set up what areas activate what, so you can screw around a bit.

In terms of overall feel, I love having a trackpad that needs the same force to press in anywhere on it. I definitely wouldn't trade it for the x50 model, but it was a weird switch at first. That option is always open though, so if you don't like this one you can just use the classic style instead.

List of shit worth keeping an eye out for;

Obvious ones, RAM/storage/Windows key.

6cell vs 9cell battery

One M.2 slot for SSDs, one internal SATA + disk drive SATA for HDD/SSD. Sellers normally don't list what type their storage is, might be worth asking.

Two RAM slots, neither are soldered.

1080 IPS option, rare but worth getting. Screen swaps are possible though.

Backlit vs nonbacklit keyboard, backlit one apparently has less travel so I'd avoid it.

CPU is swappable, 4700MQ and up are best. If not, get anything and swap it for a quad if needed. Dual i7s are a waste, 4712MQ or something like that has the same wattage as the i5s but has quad cores.

GT730 is an option, but it's not worth bothering.

If you have an i7 and it runs hot, you can swap the heatsink for the dGPU model.

usually the resolution and display size in combination determine the size of text, icons, etc on your screen. with scaling you run a high resolution screen at native resolution but make everything larger to be sharper and more readable. it's shit on linux though and windows lags behind too

As someone who bought a barebones T440p (TN, 1366x768 panel), 4GB ram, 500GB HGST TravelStar drive, i5 4300M. It might be worthwhile buying a very low spec one then upgrading it. The 1080p IPS panel can be had for $60-$130 easily and is ridiculously easy to replace. The main thing for a T440p I'd say to be a deciding factor is whether you want the GT 730M or not because the rest is a very easy and cheap swapout. If you're after good performance and good battery life consider sticking it an i5 model and getting a 9cell battery. BE WARNED: Genuine batteries manufactured by Sanyo for the T440p are garbage and the cells die quick.

For the price of a 9cell I honestly prefer to just buy them genuine from Lenovo during their coupon sales, I picked up a 9cell genuine 57++ for $130 recently. I know the price is steep but I rather pay that than to pay $50-$90 for one that's most likely had it's cells replaced with inferior ones or it's a straight up knock off. At least with the Lenovo one you have warranty with it. 6 cell ones are cheap enough to take the risk IMO

Does anyone have any other recommendations other than the x230? Or should I just buy one? My main use is for reading PDF files, coding, and web browsing. Preferably all at the same time.
Keyboard layout looks horrid compared to the x220. I'm open to swapping it, but I'll mainly be using an external keyboard.
It seems that swapping out the screen would be a benefit, however I was reading that some people had problems with the resolution of the screen for coding.
Any advice would be appreciated. My budget is around $200. Battery life is definitely a concern as well.

x220 with i7 - shit express card?
x230 with i7 - better express card later panel 1080p swap
or T420 - moddable to death, panel swap, bios mod, cpu ti ivy QM
or T430 - simple cpu swap and panel

They are all in the same price range. I know the T420 and T430 can get their CPU upgraded... to a 35W i7 36xxQM?
Is it worth the hassle with the bigger models for the real Quad upgrade or not?

I use IBM SPSS, browser, PDF reader, Radio, mediaplayer on shared tablet

I would go for the bare bones then upgrade if I wasn't after the GT730m for light gaymen.
Market for those are smaller and among them are largely higher spec. So I've found that it's more competitive to try find a fully kitted out one at a good price.

I'll be looking for IPS, 9 cell and 8GB (min). I think all dGPU SKUs have an i7. I'm looking to ultimately put a lower watt quad-core in it though.
As for HD, probably seek an SSD out myself to buy separately.

Might be worth considering to get a HDD fitted T440p because it might come with some mounting brackets that could be of use in the future.

Advanced Fringe Field Switching is a technology similar to IPS offering superior performance and color gamut with high luminosity. Color shift and deviation caused by light leakage is corrected by optimizing the white gamut, which also enhances white/grey reproduction.

Advantages

Wide viewing angles
Selectronic picture required

Disadvantages
Complex production process.

>>62338636
Depends on the laptop model, as for myself, yes, the USB ports on my X220 work great.

What's the difference between a pro and basic dock?
>>
>>62338636
>only a vga and no 3.5mm jack
yeah nah
>>
>>62338651
I think I had to remove the palmrest as well. But after that it's smooth sailing. Where do you need to get to to find out if it's librebootable?

On Britbong Amazon:

"Lenovo ThinkPad T430 i5-3320M 2.6GHz 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD DVDRW 14.1 WXGA++ 1600x900 Webcam Windows 10 Pro 64 bit WiFi Grade A (Certified Refurbished) "

Is this good value for £330?
>>
>>62338784
fuck no, they should be 250 dollars best, pass hardcore
>>
>>62338559
I know that feel. It makes me want a higher res desktop monitor.
>>
>>62338784
I got a nicer T440p for £240.
>>
Need a thinkpad to:

>college things
>3D modelling (solidworks, AutoCAD and photoshop)
>videos

If they come with a Graphics and a NVidia Quadro it's a great think.
Screen with a good resolution.
Can upgrade the cpu and ram (32 or 64gb)

Price: < $500
>>
T420 with a 128gb SSD and an Alienware screen replacer would cost me around 300 Euromonies, but a W520 with the SSD would cost me 500. I got the budget, I play vidya and I do programming. Still not sure which one to pick...
>>
>>62338907
dGPU versions of the t420, t520, w520, t430, t530, w530, t440p, t540p or w540.

>>62338935
i'd go with the t420 because i don't like laptops above 14" but that's just a personal opinion
>>
>>62338935>>62338935
It looks like you get more options with the W520. That being said, I own a T420 and I am quite pleased with it but I only have the dedicated intel chip. There are variants of the T420 with NVIDIA graphics but, again, most variants of the T420 have only the intel graphics.

TLDR: whichever has the best graphics and processing module. Do your research before you purchase on ebay.
>>
>>62338784
pass. Can get shittier ones for 150. You supposed to upgrade them anyway
>>
>>62338935
I was in the same position.

I went with a W520. Not by choice over the T420, but because it was the only auction I won.
Managed to get it for €320 after weeks of fucking about on eBay.
>>
Is a T420 good enough for my chinese cartoons and CSGO? Also how shit is the display?
>>
>>62339658
T430
>>
>>62339658

yes

no

very shit unless you do the alienware mod
>>
What's the better sites to buy a thinkpad?

I only know ebay.
>>
>>62339685
>>62339766
Guess I'm going with the T430, got my eyes on one for $130. There's also a t440p up for $180, I'm not sure if those are any good though.
>>
>>62339861
I just bought a T440p today because of these guys

I saw that one for $180 if you're on Ebay. The keyboard can be replaced but I don't think it comes with an OS or hard drive
>>
>>62339766
get a w530 and keyboard mod it, make sure to get nvidia quadro k2000m version with i7 extreme 3940xm which took me a bit to find but ended up finding, also 32 gb of ddr3 and ssds for both sata and msata. this means it would have the best screen offered also.
>>
>>62339685
Whats the difference besides the T430 having the worse keyboard?>>62339766
>>
>>62339891
The one I'm looking at has a hard drive but no OS. Looks like a pretty good deal actually.
>>
>>62339658
The standard display is extremely shit.
The HD+ display is usable.
>>
>>62339958
Superior GPU, both iGPU and dGPU are a lot better suited for gaymen
>>
>>62336401
Why?
>>
>>62340024
Because you pay more for less power and the gains in battery life aren't exactly huge.
>>
So is the T440p worth getting instead of a T430?

Here's the end result if you're still here but it doesn't look that great imo, the 30kb limit for the bios boot logo restricts a lot.

>>62337355
ULV is unironically the best in a laptop, you will never get your desktop CPU to give you the kind of battery life that ULV provides.

Are the X1 carbon and yoga series any good or should they be avoided?

Why the FUCK are all most of the new ones grey instead of black? You've gotta go T460s or newer to get normal black
>>
>>62340196
You will never throttle a full desktop processor and get the same battery life as an ULV.

And for that matter you can throttle an ULV as well, and get even more battery life.

I think what you're looking for is a desktop, champ.

>>
>>62340326

ebay or amazon. Get the fru number. 1.2 and 1.3 are matte displays. 1.1 isnt
>>

There's a seller on aliexpress that sells those new for $65 and has good feedback
>>
Using a Hackintosh on my T420. Can the VGA port be used in 1080p at the same time as the Display port with the lid closed? I have Windows connected to my two monitors for gaming (predates my Hackintosh setup), when I want to game I'll just flip the inputs. Using MacOS with just one Monitor is such a pain in the ass when used to multi monitor.

Identical apparently it's just a revision of 1.2. Probably streamlined its production.

what the hell happened to that thinkpad EC flash where you could flash the EC in xx30 thinkpads for either keyboard swap only, keyboard swap and battery whitelist removal, or both (and I think some others)
the one on the wiki is not the right one.

>>
>>62340769
It's good. It's not blazing fast of course but it's a good browsing machine for maintaining freedumbs. To be honest, I'd still put my X60 on my lap and type on it, maybe feel and touch it all over, even if it was broken just because it feels so premium.
>>
>>62340815
So all the necessary drivers will already be installed?
>>
>>62336714
To get the best performance out of the eGPU you're going to want to hook an external monitor to the video card anyway. Otherwise you suffer from a pretty severe performance drop due to sending the signal back and forth across the limited expresscard bandwidth. It'll still be leagues better than the integrated GPU, but not nearly as good as with an external monitor.
>>
Can I do anything other than surf the web on a x60?

I run GIMP, stellarium, and VLC on my X60s without any issues, so there's that.
